    Slate Covered Bridge image
The original Slate Covered Bridge dates to 1862 and was named after a local family. Unfortunately, this magnificent bridge measuring 122 feet long was destroyed by arson in 1993. The present bridge was rebuilt in 2001. Kudos to the locals for rebuilding and preserving the history of Swanzy, NH. This bridge is only one of six covered bridges that cross the Ashuelot River and lie within a few miles of each other. Friends and I made a point of visiting the bridges while staying in New Hampshire a few weeks ago. Bridges are beautiful - all! Enjoy. See more..

    Coombs Covered Bridge image
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Coombs Covered Bridge over the Ashuelot River in Winchester, NH is one of six spectacular bridges each within a few miles of each other in this part of New Hampshire. A group of friends and I made a point of visiting these bridges while on a visit here a few weeks ago. Some were a little difficult to find...this one was perhaps the easiest of all of them. The bridge was named after its owner and probable builder. Dating to 1837, the bridge is in great condition and was renovated in the late sixties. This bridge is 107 feet long, and was probably my favorite of all of them. See more..
  8. 4.5 Five Stone Arch Bridges (8 reviews)
    - Beautiful scenery and waterfalls too!

    Five Stone Arch Bridges image
Once home to a dozen stone arch bridges, there are now only 5 remaining in Hillsborough. Each of these bridges are in place with the original stones and held together without the use of any mortar/cement. A lovely drive can let you see all of them, very near to each other on Gleason Falls Road, Beard Road and Jones Rd. A wonderful place to picnic, with waterfalls and an old swimming hole is nearby. Historic and beautifully consructed, these bridges offer excellent photographic opportunities (and perhaps a dip in the old swimming hole on a scorching summer day) See more..

What a gem to stumble upon! My husband and I were thrilled to discover this stone double arch bridge while driving through New Hampshire towards Vermont. - Historic Bridge Was Worth a Brief Stop

    Cilleyville Covered Bridge image
This historically significant, single-span Town lattice truss type covered bridge was built in 1887. Its unpainted, plank-sided, 53.2-foot (16 m) length appeared to be in good condition, having been rehabilitated in 2003. Limited parking was just off NH 11. Signs indicated the bridge, but provided little warning to prepare for a turn off when driving at highway speeds. The bridge was closed to traffic but one could walk through it. I did wish there were more vantage points to view it from upriver or downriver. Other than that, it was well worth the brief stop. See more..
  17. 4.5 Sawyers Crossing Bridge (2 reviews)
    - Incredible view from inside the bridge!
    Bridges
    Sawyers Crossing Bridge image
This is another lovely covered bridge in the area, but what set it apart imo is the picturesque view from inside, especially in the fall foliage! The view of a bucolic red barn surrounded by the trees is framed by the bridge entrance. The current bridge was “reconstructed” back in 1859 - but some internet research indicated that the original bridge was built all the way back in 1771!! There’s a sizable parking area with some seating near the river. Lots of easy hiking to get good shots around the bridge as well. It was easy to find - I just plugged the name of the bridge into google maps and there it was! Led me right to it - but basically it’s off Route 10 at the end of Matthews Road. It was the first of about 6 bridges in the area that I toured - all very close together and all beautiful in their own unique ways! Highly recommend! See more..
  18. 4.5 Corbin Covered Bridge (2 reviews)
    - A bridge to history
    Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Corbin Covered Bridge image
If you're exploring the history of New Hampshire, this bridge is a must see. Spanning the North Branch of the Sugar River, the original Corbin Covered Bridge was built in 1845. In 1993, it was destroyed by fire, as were 2 other covered bridges in New Hampshire. The state wanted to build a contemporary designed bridge in its place. Wanting to preserve what was an important part of Newport history, local residents had a different idea. Covered bridge builder Arnold Graton constructed the bridge you see here today. The bridge is a short drive up route 10 north to the pine tree lined Corbin Rd, a couple of miles from the center of Newport. There are tables for picnicking in summer and fall. Beautiful area for leaf peeping. See more..

  22. 4.0 Thunder Bridge (1 review)
    - ATTRACTIVE HISTORIC BRIDGE WITH A SMALL PARK
    Historic Sites • Bridges
    Thunder Bridge image
Thunder Bridge has other names. The roadside marker near it says Pineground Bridge. It’s also called Depot Road Bridge. It is located beside and on a lower level from Depot Road and the current bridge that takes vehicular traffic over the Suncook River. The best access is on the short spur road adjacent to the Chichester side of the bridge. One can also park there. Like the bridge on Depot Road, it spans the Suncook River connecting Chichester and Epsom, but it is now only a pedestrian bridge. The nameplate displays information that it was built in 1887 by the Berlin Iron Bridge Co. of Berlin, CT. It is built in the patented lenticular-truss style that the company was known for throughout New England. The bridge is 96 feet long and 16 feet wide. The decking is made of wood. With all the vertical supports and cross-members, it’s an attractive bridge. It’s the only one of its kind in the State of New Hampshire. A small park with an information kiosk, picnic table, and a bench are on the Epsom side. The metal bench is dedicated to Bernie Reinhardt, who was President of the Historical Society of Chichester. The bench has an unusual design. The backrest features a tree with a massive crown that spreads laterally across the width of the backrest. Near the Epsom end of the bridge, there is some drive shaft machinery from the Ordway Mill on display. It was pleasant place to sit and enjoy the fresh air on a mild fall day. On a summer day, it’s make a great picnic spot. A visit to this bridge can easily be combined with a visit to nearby Chichester Country Store about 1/4 of a mile away for some of the store’s legendary Apple Cider Donuts or lunchtime subs or sandwiches. I rate Thunder Bridge at 4.25 and highly recommend a combined visit. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..

Traveling downhill on Townhouse Road you will see the single lane unpainted bridge on Root Hill Road. There are no parking spaces and Townhouse is very busy. If you miss the turn, continue down Townhouse to the bottom of the hill, turn left and try to find Root Hill or go to the bottom where there is a small general store where you can turn around. We went in early September and the foliage was just starting to turn. See more..

Chandler's Mill Road runs off of John Stark Highway (routes 103 & 11). It is an old, unpainted Boston and Maine rairoad bridge. The bridge spans the Sugar River. The road is unpaved and there are no parking areas. Being there is little traffic, what traffic there is seems to speed--do not stop on a curve. The bridge is #NH-57. We went in early September and the foliage was just starting to turn. See more..

  29. 5.0 Tannery Hill Bridge (1 review)
    - FOOTBRIDGE IN A SCENIC SETTING
    Bridges
    Tannery Hill Bridge image
Tannery Hill Bridge is a footbridge that spans a deep gorge and Gunstock Brook. It connects the village and the town offices, plus the police and fire stations. The bridge is closest to the Gilford Fire & Rescue. It is best accessed by turning off Cherry Valley Road onto Valley Road, passing the Gilford Police Dept. and Town Hall buildings. Tannery Hill Bridge is straight ahead next to the Gilford Fire & Rescue building. It’s best to park near town Hall as there are only a couple of parking spaces close to the bridge, and the fire trucks exit the station right near those spaces. The bridge is in scenic setting. There are some picnic tables in a little grove close to the bridge. There is also a very interesting evergreen tree with numerous large bulging burls. The bridge’s span is 43 feet; its overall length is 49 feet. It is town lattice truss construction. This bridge was built in 1995 by the Gilford Rotary Club. It replaced a bridge that was removed decades before. I’ve visited this bridge a few times before. On this visit, I noticed that it did not have a conventional all wooden roof. Although the supports are wood, the main part of roof is metal. Usually, when I go there with or without friends, there’s nobody else around; however, on this visit, a group of people from Maryland were up for the weekend for a wedding and told about this bridge, so they came for a visit and a group photo which I took for them with a cellphone that belonged to one in the party. Since I’ve been to various parts of Maryland, we got into some conversation. This is one my favorite covered bridges because it is picturesque and in a quiet area with no vehicular traffic. There is no admission charge to visit the bridge and the picnic grove near it. I rate Tannery Hill Bridge at 5.0. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..
  30. 4.0 The Old Stone Bridge (1 review)
    - STONE BRIDGE FROM THE 1800’S STILL IN USE
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    The Old Stone Bridge image
During the time of COVID-19, with many attractions closed, visiting some of the New Hampshire Historical Markers and landmarks provided some outdoor activity and educational opportunities. In Rochester, I visited some places in the heart of downtown. Then, I went to see The Old Stone Bridge which is also known as the North Main Street Bridge. It carries traffic over the Cocheco River. This is a three-arch stone bridge built in the 1880’s. Most people driving over it have no idea what it really looks like. One has to park in the municipal parking lot beside it, get out of the car, and walk over near the edge of the river to see it. An off-the beaten-path place for the best view is Duval Park at the Rochester Riverwalk on River Street. Nearby is a dam with a spillway that creates a waterfall-like cascade. The view from here is quite scenic. This bridge is similar to the famous five stone arch bridges of Hillsborough County. I rate The Old Stone Bridge at 4.50 and recommend a visit. 31. 3.0 Piscataqua River Bridge (1 review)
    - SITE OF THE FIRST BRIDGE FROM NEWINGTON TO DURHAM
    Bridges
During the COVID-19 time, with many attractions closed, visiting some of the New Hampshire Historical Markers and landmarks provided some outdoor activity and educational opportunities. This marker commemorates a bridge built in 1794 that spanned the Piscataqua River from Fox Point in Newington to Meader's Neck in Durham via Goat Island which is close to the middle of the distance spanned. The bridge was an engineering marvel in its day. The bridge was still used in the mid-1850’s. The bridge came near US Rt. 4. At the point, it was the beginning of the First New Hampshire Turnpike which extends to Concord and beyond. I’ve been to both ends of where that bridge was. It’s almost double the span of the present-day Little Bay Bridge from Hilton’s Point in Dover to Bloody Point in Newington. As a historian, I really like roadside historic markers. Stopping to read them is a fun way to learn some history, especially for the youngsters. There are two kayak launch areas within a mile of this location – one a Royalls Cove and one at Cedar Point which also allows boat launches. I rate this at 3.50. It’s a worth a quick stop in the breakdown lane to read. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..
