I was at the other end of the Cotton Valley Rail Trail in Sanbornville earlier that day, where the historic RR turntable is in the aptly-named Turntable Park. I walked the trail a bit and saw quite a few bicyclists using it. It's a beautiful trail!See more..
We have ridden the entire Northern Rail Trail , and some sections more than once. In general the surface is good and the grades easy. There are some stretches in the southern section ghat are not very appealing, but for the most part the trail is very scenic. On our most recent outing we rode from Webster Lake in Franklin to Highland Lake in Andover. The section is completely wooded and not overly busy.See more..
We started in Fitzwilliam at State Line Circle. There is parking for several cars on this dirt road, but no actually parking lot. The trail itself is a mix of rocky, grassy, and sandy stretches. I would recommend a mountain bike. It is a fairly remote area with few road crossings and the scenery is generally goodSee more..
We started our ride from the athletic fields in Keene on Krif Rd and headed southwest. The first several miles of trail make for easy riding, as the trail is well packed and the grades are easy. The trail eventually narrows and the surface changes often. There are a couple muddy stretches, a few short sandy areas, and some bumpy riding. We rode to the Monadnock Speedway then returned to Keene. I would recommend a mountain bike or possibly a hybrid. See more..

Hiked from the AMC cardigan lodge to Welton Falls via the Manning Trail. It was not a super challenging hike but we were still breaking a sweat and it was a good trail to take the dog on. Walked for maybe an hour before reaching the waterfalls and we were very pleased. It's a beautiful waterfall and there are numerous spots to get a great view and take pictures. The trail leads right down to a nice spot where you could set up a picnic or swim.See more..

We hiked to the summit of Mt Cardigan from the AMC lodge and back down. It was a good challenge and took 5 hours with a stop up top for lunch and plenty of little breaks. The kids loved the open rocks at the top- especially the section between the fire tower and the Firescrew. I appreciated the good markings and varied terrain. The views from the summit are impressive.See more..
The walk around Goose Pond was beautiful. It took about an hour and half including getting to the pond and back to the car. We did stop and take pictures throughout the walk. Please keep Google maps on you as there are not good markings on the trail. Drop a pin on your start point on the Google maps. It is level in most places, but there are places you have to go over rocks and fallen trees. We would go again.See more..

4.5Sheiling Forest(6 reviews) - A walk in the woods Saturday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails • Forests
I have visited this forest several times and I have to say it is one of my favorite places. Rarely, if ever, crowded, this place offers peace, quiet, tranquility. Sit and listen to the bubbling brook as dragonflies buzz around you. Hike up to the massive boulders left by melting glaciers. Admire the sun peeking through the leaves as you make your way along the rige trail. Hiking is easy and gradual, perfect for any age or ability. Enjoy the calmness this forest provides.See more..

If you're looking for a place to experience some outdoor exercise and enjoy some peace and quiet, the Lake Winnisquam Scenic Trail is a great place to visit. The trail follows along parts of Lake Winnisquam and also a railroad track that is still in operation. The path is very wide, allowing for 'traffic' in both directions without a problem. The day we went was a cool, sunny day and there weren't many people there, which was great. The length of the trail is 1.8 miles (one way) and pretty easy to navigate since the few hills are pretty shallow. Just beyond the main parking area is a beach which must get very popular in the summertime. A really pretty place.See more..
5.0Common Pathway(3 reviews) - Nice pathway to walk, run or ride bike Spent 2-3 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails • Cross-country Ski Areas
A clean safe paved path to walk about a mile in Peterborough. Located on Summer Street off of Main Street. Has a parking lot. After parking enter pathway and can go south for a short distance on paved path then empties onto Summer Street short walk to town. If you walk north on paved path empties onto Summer Street for a short distance (.02 mi) then goes back onto paved pathway. Nice walk/run/bike (no motor vehicles) for about 3/4 mi. Path located between street and river. Then ends on Hunt Road. Cars can also park on Hunt Rd and walk south. If you actually park on Hunt Rd ( have to offset park) and walk straight in a northerly direction through Neighborhood there is another paved path (walk/run or bike only) that will lead to Rt. 202 north. Both paths are kept clear during winter months. See more..
5.0Brook Walk(3 reviews) - Hard to find trailhead but worth the walk Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
It took us awhile to find this trail after parking. Description says: "the Brook Walk begins at the upper bridge crossing Shannon Brook below Shannon Pond. The bridge is accessible from the Shannon Pond Kiosk or the Brook Walk Kiosk." Anyway, we took the trail down to the 7th waterfall and then walked back (.3 miles one way, I believe I read). The trail gets a bit rockier and steeper near the last couple waterfalls. It is a pretty, peaceful hike and the waterfalls are all different and fun to see.See more..

A magical hidden gem, tucked away from the main road in Newmarket, is what you will find here. On the site of a former mill, this three acre park as some interesting history and is like stepping into a Bob Ross painting. 3.5Huntington Cascades(2 reviews) - Falls NOT right on the side of the road! Spent < 1 hour Hiking Trails
The description says the falls can be seen on the side of the road....they cannot. There is a short road into the parking lot, then you have to walk a few hundred yards down a path to the falls. The falls were worth seeing and I am glad we found them....the sign was taken off the frame...we think because of COVID (discouraging visitors) and was not easy to find. There was another path to more falls but it was buggy and raining so we did not attempt it.See more..

4.0Dover Community Trail(2 reviews) - DOVER’S LONGEST & BEST TRAIL FOR TREKKING & BICYCLING Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
The City of Dover completed Phase III of development of the Dover Community Trail with several improvements to the area between the Fisher Street access point and Central Avenue near the corner of Rutland Street. This was years in the planning. The project involved widening the trail by first clearing out brush, weeds, and a lot of poison ivy. A big drainage project followed. Then, all the land had to be graded. And, the last step was paving that whole section which is about a mile long. Since I pass this area daily, I got to see the progress. I witnessed the whole process from cutting down saplings to the paving of the final section. Now people are continuing onto the this improved, paved section instead of reversing direction when they came to it. I myself ventured onto this section only once and didn't go very far because of all the poison ivy I saw right on the edge of the trail. On my most-recent visit to the trail, I went to this section and walked a bit. A man out jogging passed me. There was also a woman out for an aerobic walk. I was out for a stroll and some fresh air. With the bicycle already put away for the winter, I'll be waiting until spring to ride along this section. These improvements and lengthening the paved part of the trail raise my opinion of it to 4.75. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..

3.0Sabbath Trail(1 review) - Nice walk in the woods Hiking Trails Liked this walk in the woods by the historic Seventh Day Adventist church and grounds. Lovely building and pavilion. The walk is filled with granite slabs that have Biblical scripture telling the story of the Sabbath. I’d give the meandering mile long walk a B, the Scripture on the slabs an A+ and the theological interpretation a C. Would love to come back when the church is open!See more..
4.0Gap Mountain Trail(1 review) - Big reward for short hike Hiking Trails
Found this hike on a Monadnock area website. Good pick! Good sized parking lot at the South Lot, and a short 1.5m hike up to Gap Mountain that had a wonderful panoramic view of the area and Monadnock. We thought it would be a GREAT kid hike, and when we got to the top a family with little kids had just made it up from the North Parking Lot. The south lot trail was marvelous and you felt like you were climbing thru a col in the 4000’ white mountains. Interesting terrain and we were told that there are ton of blueberries in July/aug up there. See more..
4.0Dominicus Hanson Pines(1 review) - SCENIC RIVER VIEWS, A PRETTY FOOTBRIDGE, A PAVED PATH, & A DIRT TRAIL Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
The Dominicus Hanson Pines complex has many areas that include outdoor basketball courts, a playground, paved and unpaved walking and bicycling trails, and a scenic footbridge over the Cocheco River. In season, there is also an outdoor pool. There is plenty of free parking at the lot. My most-recent visit focused on the Hanson Pines Trail which has two main sections. The first is a paved path that goes straight from Hillsdale Road through to the parking lot on Yeagley Way near Rochester High School. This is an easy walk on pretty level ground. There is a footbridge over the Cocheco River near the Hillsdale Road end that is in a scenic setting. There is also a dirt trail off to the right of the Yeagley Way entrance. A lot of people with mountain bikes go that way. The trail is well-traveled so there are a lot of exposed tree roots, making for uneven terrain. I’ve taken both the path and the trail. On my most-recent visit, I did the easier trek on the paved path and paused for the scenic views of the Cocheco River and the footbridge. There are three info boards near the Yeagley Way access. One tells about Mr. Hanson and the trail. Another is an interpretative board about the woodlands. The third lists the park rules. Admission to the Hanson Pines Trail is free. The views of the river and attractive footbridge added points my rating of Dominicus Hanson Pines at 4.50; and, I can recommend a visit. 4.0Rochester Riverwalk(1 review) - ROCHESTER’S RIVERWALK ~ A WORK IN PROGRESS Hiking Trails During the COVID-19 time, with many attractions closed, one of the few permitted activities in New Hampshire was taking a walk outdoors. In Rochester, I visited some historic places in the downtown area. Then, I walked along the Cocheco River to Duval Park, one of the developed areas of the Rochester Riverwalk. Duval Park is a small pocket park that is a great place for a perfect straight-on view of the historic Old Stone Bridge, also called the Main Street Bridge, built in the 1880’s. Duval Park was named for Dr. Ernest Duval, the first French-Canadian physician to settle in the Rochester in the early 1900s. The park has a small unusual fountain that was cast of aluminum. I thought that this part of the Rochester Riverwalk is particularly scenic. The part of the trail here is level and mostly paved. The benches provide places to sit and enjoy the views and the sounds of the river’s rushing water as it cascades over the nearby dam. I enjoyed my visit to that section. I got some nice photos of the bridge from Duval Park. Sections in the Hillsdale Road and Dominicus Hanson Pines Park areas are developed. I’ve also trekked on The Hanson Pines Trail which has a footbridge over the Cocheco River. There is paved path that goes straight from Hillsdale Road through to a parking lot on Yeagley Way near Rochester High School. I rate these finished sections of the Rochester Riverwalk with scenic views of the Cocheco River at 4.50 and can recommend a visit. When the project is finished, it will be really nice. 4.0Spruce Hole Bog Conservation Area(1 review) - GOOD HIKING TRAILS NEAR A KETTLE HOLE BOG Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails During the COVID-19 time, with many attractions closed, hiking and trekking were some of the only outdoor activities available. One afternoon, I visited a couple of places with trails in Durham. The Spruce Hole Bog Conservation Area was one of them. This area is of modest size --- some 40 acres. It’s mostly woods; however, the kettle hole bog takes up over two acres. On the day of my visit, there were a number of people there. The area was large enough so that it wasn’t crowded. Soon into my trek, I could hear a bird calling from somewhere in the trees, but I couldn’t see it. The trees camouflaged it. It was a call I’d never heard before. From info and audio at All About Birds, I was pretty sure I’d identified the call as that of a Savannah Sparrow; and, that particular bird is listed with as a species that inhabits the area. The main entrance was on a gated service road. The surface was pretty even. At the time of my visit, the trail down the bog was a bit soggy from a lot of recent rain. Overall, it was a good place for hiking, walking a leashed dog, or birding. In winter, it would be a good place for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. I rate Spruce Hole Bog Conservation Area at 4.0. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..
4.0Somersworth Riverwalk(1 review) - RIVERFRONT TRAILS & OVERLOOKS WITH SCENIC VIEWS Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails During the COVID-19 time, with many attractions closed, visiting some of the parks and hiking trails provided some outdoor activity opportunities. Since the Somersworth Riverwalk has no formal address, the best guidance to finding the entrance is to give a landmark. Parking is across from the yellow house at 19 Buffumsville Road. The Somersworth Riverwalk gives several scenic views of the Salmon Falls River. The parcel of land is just under 10 acres. There is a short, fairly steep spur trail from the parking lot down to the main trails which fork to the left and right along the riverbank at the bottom. My estimate is that it’s a 40% grade. At the bottom, one is very close to a bend in the river. It’s the first of several scenic spots. On my visit, I took the trail to the right to try to catch up to the kayakers I’d seen as I started down the incline. And, having looked at the trail map, I knew that this was the longer trail. A few minutes later, I found that the kayakers had stopped downriver. I got to watch them paddling for awhile during my trek. The trail itself was pretty level. There were a couple of clearings with overlooks. One place has a very large boulder which I perceived as a viewing platform. It afforded excellent views of the rive river in both directions. In season, there is a picnic area. It was not set up yet during my visit. As I went along, I noted a lot of different types of deciduous trees which meant that this should be a good place to take in some fall foliage in from late September into October. At the time of my visit, there was a large crop of healthy dandelions. I saw about 200 of them beside the trail. As I finished my visit, a man with a dog came down. And, since he trails are wide enough and easy, I’d say it’s a great place to walk a dog. I rate Somersworth Riverwalk at 4.50 and recommend a visit. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..
4.0Bellamy Park(1 review) - DISC GOLF COURSE & MULTI-USE PARK Parks • Hiking Trails • Playgrounds
Bellamy Park is a 33-acre community park near the new Dover High School. The main feature is a disc golf course. There is a small picnic area near the parking lot. Access to the main parts of the park is over a footbridge and up two short flights of stairs that have no handrails. Up in the main parts of the park are the 18-hole disc golf course, a small playground, and areas for walking, jogging, and trekking around the perimeter. The Bellamy River runs through the park. There is a place where fishing is allowed. Crossing the footbridge, one can see a scenic spot. There are rocks in the river that create rapids and a mini waterfall. I always pause to watch the water flow there. At the time of my visit, the trail was open, but the disc golf course and the playground were closed due to COVID-19 restrictions which were eased in time for Memorial Day weekend. Passing the small picnic area, I noticed that the paint on the one table was peeling. During my visit, I had a relaxing trek. I’ve been here before when the disc golf course was open and have had to be on the lookout for flying discs as not all disc golfers are skilled at controlling the direction of their discs. Also, while I was there, I saw a few other people using the trails. There is a building on the property that houses the pro shop which is operated by Broken Chains Disc Golf Supplies from Manchester, NH. It wasn’t open yet as of mid-May. Only the picnic area and the clearing adjacent to the river are fully handicapped accessible. And, for those with issues with balance, a walking stick is highly recommended not only for the stairs but also for the uneven terrain up in the park which has a few slightly hilly and sloped areas. In the winter, this park becomes a cross-country skiing course. For some of its unique features and its scenic setting on the river, I rate Bellamy Park at 4.50.
