Attended 10:30am Mass with family (young adults). Beautiful cathedral, beautifully decorated for the season. Music and choir were exceptional! Lovely Mass, very traditional with several officiants in attendance. Young families and extended families in attendance too. It was a holy, reverent and yet warm, welcoming worship experience. 7. 4.0 St. Katharine Drexel Parish Church (1 review)
    - LAKES REGION CHURCH WITH MODERN CATHEDRAL-LIKE DESIGN
    Churches & Cathedrals
St. Katharine Drexel Parish Church image
Having driven up the Wolfeboro Highway dozens of times and passed this church high on the hill above, I finally had time to drive up there and get a closer look at it. For a relatively small town, St. Katharine Drexel Parish Church was a much bigger church than expected. So was the parking lot. I thought it had a modern cathedral-like appearance with classic features, such as stained glass windows and a simplified rose window. The belfry is smaller than usual. To me, it appears to be an electronic system. While I was photographing the front of the church, three crosses in a wooded area off to my left caught my eye. I went over to check that out. There was a little grotto with a sculpture of Mary holding the crucified Jesus. There were benches nearby. I also found a path that went by the Catholic Stations of the Cross. That was the first time I’d seen something like that outdoors on church grounds. I found it interesting. There was also a small place to sit in a little garden setting in the parking lot. I rate St. Katharine Drexel Parish Church and its grounds at 4.25 and can recommend stopping by. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..
  8. 4.0 Grace Baptist Church (1 review)
    - SMALL, PRETTY WHITE CLAPBOARD CHURCH
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Grace Baptist Church image
Heading home from Sanford via US-202, I saw the sign that read: Baptist Church – Left at Lights. I’d been by the sign dozens of times. This day, I had time to go there to take a look at it. It was a relatively small but pretty white clapboard church - typical of New England. One distinguishing feature I noticed was the double bracketed roof. A second was the carving on the tower/belfry. Both appear to be touches of the Italianate style of architecture. I'd never seen the style of round window on this church before. It's not a rose window, and it does not appear to be Gothic either. I learned that Grace Baptist Church has been an established congregation with a long history. It celebrated its 155th anniversary in 2016, and 2021 is its 160th. I rate the Grace Baptist Church at 4.0 and can recommend a look-see to those who like New England architecture and churches. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..
  9. 4.0 Mirror Lake Community Church (1 review)

    Mirror Lake Community Church image
Recommended. Take a drive along rural route 109 and through Mirror Lake, New Hampshire and this 1864 era community church will welcome you to town. Now under the control of a local council, this was the Second Christian Church of Tuftonborough back in the day. Today it's under the control of a local, lay council. If you vacation in the area during the summer months, you'll find services are held between June-September with guest ministers and local musicians offering inspiration. It's worth a stop as your drive by to snag a picture during your travels. See more..

St. John The Baptist Episcopal Church image
This church is one of the most picturesque ones that I've seen. It was built in 1876 and its architecture is Carpenter Gothic. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. You can't miss it - it's down the street and around the corner from the very popular Poor People's Pub. Have I actually been IN the church? No, because unfortunately these days churches are only open when there are Sunday services or special events. See more..
  11. 5.0 Walnut Grove Baptist Church (1 review)
    - HISTORIC CHURCH IN A SCENIC SETTING

    Walnut Grove Baptist Church image
Returning to NH from weekend time in Vacationland, I decided to go home via Salmon Falls Road. Along that road, I came upon Walnut Grove Baptist Church. I’d passed this church a few times before. This time, the way the sunlight was falling on it, coupled with the blue sky background, made was such a pretty sight that I stopped to admire it for longer than ever before. It was the perfect small church in a New England country setting with lots of vacant land beside and behind it. There was even vacant land across the road. Walnut Grove Baptist Church is the classic, pretty small white church with a tall steeple. It is an example of simple architecture that has a strong visual impact. The church was founded in 1864 so it’s a historic building as well. During my visit, hundreds of migrating birds came to rest in the trees near the far side of the church parking lot. And, what a noisy flock they were! I rate Walnut Grove Baptist Church at 5.0 and recommend stopping by to admire it for its simple architecture when in the area of Salmon Falls Road. 12. 4.0 Holy Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church (1 review)
    - MID-CENTURY MODERN CHURCH WITH A LARGE TRINITY WINDOW
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
Holy Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church image
The congregation of Holy Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church was established over 60 years ago. The church building is a good example of Mid-Century Modern architecture. I find the most interesting parts of it are the dome-shaped sanctuary and the Trinity Window in the back of the sanctuary near the altar. I think these features are best viewed as one approaches the Woodbury Avenue exit northbound on the Spaulding Turnpike. An up-close view is best seen from the part of the church driveway that runs parallel to the highway. In the afternoon, the sun shines on that side of the building. At that time, one can get the full effect of the three interlocking circles and the colored glass of the Trinity Window. And, on my most-recent visit, the sun hit that window just right to showcase it. The church also has an interesting spire. I rate the aesthetics of Holy Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church at 4.50. - WHITE CLAPBOARD GOTHIC REVIVAL-STYLE CHURCH
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
    St. Mary Church image
After having lunch at Gepetto’s Pizza, I headed up Gerry Avenue to Main Street. St. Mary Church was straight ahead. Several features of the church’s architecture caught my attention. I went over for a closer look at the details. There were several characteristics of the Gothic Revival style. The influence was very obvious from the tall narrow windows with pointed arches. The triple-arched window with a round window inset above the main entrance reflected a strong Gothic influence. I saw two nice Trinity Windows above both doorways. The tower and larger-then-usual enclosed belfry had some nice decorative carpentry. Just below the bottom of the belfry, there were five crosses. That was something I hadn’t seen before. Not a lot is known about the church building’s history which seem to start in 1878 when Newmarket organized as a separate parish from Exeter. The church building is well preserved. St. Mary Church is included in the Newmarket Historic District listing on te National Register of Historic Places. I rate the architecture of St. Mary Church at 4.25 and can recommend stopping by for a look. 15. 5.0 The Congregational Church In Exeter UCC (1 review)
    - HISTORIC 1798 FEDERAL-STYLE CHURCH ~ PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN ATTENDED
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
The Congregational Church In Exeter UCC image
The Congregation Church in Exeter’s history goes back to the congregation’s establishment in 1638 by Rev. John Wheelwright after he was expelled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The building we see today was built in 1798. That’s 1798, not an 1800’s date. This church is well preserved. President Abraham Lincoln attended a service at this church when he went to Exeter to visit his son Robert when Robert was a student at nearby Phillis Exeter Academy. Besides its history, it is a fabulous example of Federal architecture with its symmetry, fanlight windows above the windows on the second floor and above the window in the clock tower, the moldings around doors and windows, the columns in several places on the façade, the octagonal belfry with its open arches, a domed octagonal lantern room, and a fairly ow steeple. In short, the millwork involved in constructing this church is magnificent. While I was taking in the style details, a couple walking their dog came along. They commented on the church’s classic beauty. They liked to take their walks in this direction mainly to see the church. I said that, if I lived in Exeter, I’d do the same thing. Later research at home revealed that the church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Given the year it was built, it was no surprise. For its history back to 1798 and its classic Federal architecture, I rate The Congregational Church in Exeter at 5.0 and highly recommend stopping by to admire it. While there, take in the history of the area that includes a state historic marker across the street and the Town House Common which is a nice small park. 16. 4.0 Salem Bible Church (1 review)
    - NEW ENGLAND WHITE CLAPBOARD CHURCH
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Salem Bible Church image
Stopping by Moo’s Place for ice cream, I saw the Salem Bible Church next door and went over for a visit. Its architectural style suggested that it might be a historic church from the 1800’s; but, research revealed that the church history on Elmer Road dates back to 1981 with rental of a house there. Then, the congregation built a church that opened in January of 2003. Nevertheless, it’s a pretty white clapboard church in a country setting so common in New England. I rate the Salem Bible Church at 4.0 and can recommend a visit, especially when going to Moo’s Place. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..

    - CHURCH WITH A NEWER BUILDING & A LONG HISTORY
    Churches & Cathedrals
First Parish United Church of Christ (Congregational) image
Congregational churches have a long history in the Dover-Rollinsford-Somersworth area. The First Parish United Church of Christ came about through many changes over more than two centuries with subdivision from the original Dover parish and eventually federation with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Somersworth in 1934. Today’s church building dates from around 1983, although some of its classic architecture, with features in the Greek Revival style, suggest 1800’s construction. I’ve attended religious services here several times with friends. I’ve also been to some events. My favorite was the Holly Daze Fair which featured a lunch with soups made by the pastor. On my most-recent visit, a new detail came out. I noticed two vents in the front – one in the tower and the other in the belfry. I rate First Parish United Church of Christ (Congregational) at 4.25. 18. 4.0 BeFree Community Church (1 review)
    - SMALL, PRETTY COUNTRY CHURCH
    Churches & Cathedrals
Out for a ride to nowhere in Barrington one afternoon, I came upon the BeFree Community Church, a classic small, pretty white clapboard country church. The architecture and appearance say 1800’s construction, but the church wasn’t established and built until the mid-1950’s. Although more like posts, the columns in front suggest a Greek Revival influence. It’s in a quiet area with a lot of open space around it ~ a perfect setting for a church. I rate the BeFree Community Church at 4.25. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..
  19. 4.0 Newington Town Church (1 review)
    - HISTORIC CLASSIC WHITE NEW ENGLAND CHURCH
Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
    Newington Town Church image
Historically, the present-day Newington Town Church, United Church of Christ was known as the Meeting House and later as the Newington Congregational Church. Built in 1712, it is the oldest church in the United States to be continuously operated by Congregationalists. The original style was Federal. During renovations in 1838, the two-section bell tower with pinnacles, sometimes called finials, was added. These reflect the Greek Revival style. Newington Town Church is a classic pretty white New England church. When traveling through Newington, I frequently make the two-mile detour off the Spaulding Turnpike to see this church and some other nearby buildings in the town’s former center. The stop here is a step back in time to the Colonial and Early American periods which are my primary interests in history. The 1838 additions give me insight into construction styles that some of my ancestors saw in the years following their 1832 arrival in New England. As a historian, I appreciate the preservation work that goes into maintaining this and the other buildings. In 2012, I celebrated the church’s 300th anniversary with the congregation. For its scenic setting and classic architecture, I rate the Newington Town Church at 4.50 and recommend a visit to see it and the surrounding buildings. 20. 4.0 Newmarket Community Church (1 review)
    - HISTORIC CHURCH WITH AN UNUSUAL FINIAL
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Newmarket Community Church image
Newmarket Community Church has an interesting history. It was constructed in 1828 as the First Congregation Church. Since then, there have been several additions. The church steeple was added in 1840. In 1855, this Newmarket landmark underwent a major construction project. The building was raised, and Fellowship Hall was built underneath. Later in 1855, the organ was installed in the larger sanctuary. The town clock on the steeple has a story of its own. In 1871, Civil War veteran John Palmer decided that the town needed a clock. It happened to coincide with plans for change to the steeple. He raised $425.00 through a subscription book. In 1872, the clock was installed and operating for the church rededication service. There is an object that looks like a bowling pin atop the steeple. It is actually just an unusual architectural finial. Over the years, three faiths were consolidated into today’s Newmarket Community Church: the United Church of Christ, the United Methodist Church, and the American Baptist Church. Initially, the church appears to be of a very simple design; but, when one looks closer, different details begin to stand out. Whenever I pass this church, I admire some aspect of the detailed carpentry on the front – particularly around and above the center entrance of the church. I also like the double-arched Gothic windows, the dentil carving under the eaves, and the unique finial. For its historic importance to Newmarket and the design aesthetics, I rate the Newmarket Community Church at 4.50 and recommend a visit when in the Newmarket area. 21. 4.0 Lee Church Congregational (1 review)
    - TOWN OF LEE’S HISTORIC CHURCH
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Lee Church Congregational image
The Town of Lee has had a meetinghouse since the early 1700’s. The present-day church was built in 1861 and became the Congregational church in 1867. When I stopped by for a visit, I noticed that the building has a few distinguishing features. First were the cornice returns on the roofline. Next, I noticed the banisters around the open belfry. I also noticed the semicircular fan-shaped panel over the front door in the tower which I believed might be a vent. Then, I noticed the tall, narrow windows that had sort of a plain Italianate look to them. I thought it was pretty white clapboard country church. I rate Lee Church Congregational at 4.25. 22. 4.0 First United Methodist Church (1 review)
    - HISTORIC METHODIST CHURCH
    Churches & Cathedrals
    First United Methodist Church image
The date stone on the historic First United Methodist Church in Rochester shows that it was constructed in 1868. This building replaced the original church built in 1825. The Methodist church was one of the earliest churches in Rochester. Red brick was a common building material in New England in the 1800's. And, the Federal architectural style was popular long after the Federal Period. . One day, when passing by, some interesting architectural elements of this church caught my attention. As I was studying the details on the façade of the church, I noticed some very unusual features about the clock. First, the clock is set very high up on the belfry. It almost looks like an afterthought worked into the overall design of the tower. Second, the clock is very small compared to clocks on other churches and city/town halls. This appeared to be an E. Howard & Co. tower clock. The detailed carpentry work on the base of the tower and the fancy brickwork around the windows and the below the roofline add to the eye-appeal of the façade. The center window has a tracery window look. The round section at the top resembles a rose window. The center entrance door is one of the tallest church doors I’ve ever seen. Overall, I admired the numerous curved and arched features in the design. Inside, the church also has a large organ by the Faucher Organ Company. At the time of my visit, I did notice some peeling paint on the tower which detracted from the aesthetics. For the attractiveness of the architectural design, I rate the First United Methodist Church at 4.50 and recommend stopping by to admire the church’s architectural lines when in or near the downtown area of Rochester. The reason for the delay in submitting this review was due to a months-long loss of my ability to post photos with my reviews. If you found this review helpful, please click HELPFUL below. See more..
  23. 5.0 First Parish Church (1 review)
    - OLDEST PARISH OF ANY DENOMINATION IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
    Churches & Cathedrals
    First Parish Church image
Dover has both the oldest Catholic parish in New Hampshire as well as the oldest parish of any denomination in New Hampshire. And, for this church, it’s most likely because English settlers came to Dover in 1623. First Parish gathered initially in 1633, making it the oldest parish of any Christian denomination in the state. The present church building dates back to 1825. And, in line with its history, it was built of red brick in the Federal architectural style, for the most part. I particularly like the departures from the classic Federal style in both the ornate belfry as well as the distinctive stepped-gable roofline which occurs in Northern Renaissance Revival and Dutch Colonial Revival architecture. The clock in the tower is well maintained. With the church’s proximity to the City Hall and its clock, people in the downtown area can always be aware of just what time it is. I’ve been to a number of different types of services, concerts, and events at this church. Everything is always well done, and the staff is wonderful. In addition, the church hosts Dover’s main food pantry and a thrift shop in its adjacent building. For its historical value and architecture as well as the multiple roles it plays in the community and the church staff, I rate First Parish Church at 5.0. 24. 4.0 St Michael Parish Church (1 review)
    - MID-CENTURY RENDITION OF GREEK REVIVAL ARCHITECTURE
Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
    St Michael Parish Church image
St. Michael Roman Catholic Community Church was built in 1957 and dedicated in 1958. It is built of red brick and is a fine example of a mid-century version of the classic Greek Revival style of architecture with its symmetrical shape, pilasters, columns, a porch entry, triangular shape of the front entrance, and decorated cornices and friezes. I happened upon this church when I visited the Gale Park War Memorial & Park across the street. It was a pleasant surprise to find it. For its well-executed modern version of Greek Revival architecture, I rate St. Michael Roman Catholic Community Church at 4.25. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..

  26. 4.0 Dover Baptist Church (1 review)
    - ONE OF DOVER’S HISTORIC LANDMARKS
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
    Dover Baptist Church image
The Dover Baptist Church has a long history. It began as the Washington Street Free Will Baptist Church in 1840. The first church on the present-day site burned to the ground. It was rebuilt in 1883. In 1918, the Central Avenue Baptist Church joined the Washington Street Free Will Baptist Church to form the new Dover Baptist Church. The building for the Sunday school was built much later around the mid-20th century. The church is an interesting piece of architecture. Its asymmetrical design is neither Federal style nor Georgian style, but the influence of both styles is evident with touches of the Gothic. There is a trinity window on the left front of the church. The large window in the center is like a rose window with smaller windows under it. The window on the right has a trinity window panel above three arched Gothic-like panels. The dentil effect crafted in bricks is something I’ve never seen before. Dentil work is usually carved in wood. Other noteworthy features are the different patterns on the roof of the spire and the different oblong and triangular designs created by the arrangement of the bricks on the church façade. The tower, belfry, and spire aren’t very high. With the church so close to the Cocheco River, keeping the height down and not adding a cross to the top of the church was a good idea to reduce the risk of a lightning strike. The Dover Baptist Church is one of Dover’s landmarks near the downtown area. When passing this church, I always catch a glimpse of some architectural feature. For its unusual combination of architectural styles that seem to work together, I rate the Dover Baptist Church at 4.50 and recommend a visit to see its features. - HISTORIC SMALL CHURCH IN SCENIC SETTING

    Hope Community Church image
The congregation of Hope Community Church was founded in 1881. It is an Advent Christian Church. It is a small, white clapboard church situated in a scenic setting near an overpass for the Spaulding Turnpike. The church’s simple design is what I like most about it and find aesthetically pleasing every time I pass it. It’s totally unpretentious. I rate Hope Community Church at 4.25 and can recommend taking a drive by it to appreciate simple, basic architecture. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below. See more..
