My great niece needed to do a school project about her ancestors and she decided to do it on her father’s side of the family. Her great grandmother and the AMAZING women at the Exeter Historical Society helped her uncover some exciting information and complete her report, while learning so much. With the Historical Society’s assistance, she was able to trace her ancestors back to England and the ship that they sailed on and when they arrived in the US in 1638. She also found that though them, she is related to two of the founding families of Exeter, NH, and that one of her ancestors signed the Declaration of Independence! The guardians of the treasure trove of information and artifacts at the Exeter Historical Society are knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. Make an appointment today to find out more about your family history or to learn more about Exeter’s history. Well worth a visit!!See more..

We found the location with the aid of our Garmin in a picturesque section of the town. The entrance to the museum is actually on the side street and we had to ring the bell to enter. Once inside, the museum's Executive Director Stephanie took us on a tour. While I knew some credit union history, I was pleased to learn many details that were new to me. There really is an interesting story here and the former mansion is a perfect place to house the museum.See more..
It has been my mission of late to explore local sites/buildings etc. You know these are the ones we all just become so familiar with we just drive by and don't give it a second thought. There are truly little gems everywhere. My visit was very good here. The building itself is gorgeous inside. There is a lot of wood and paneling and an upstairs with a high ceiling that lets a lot of light in. To be fair they were in the midst of setting up an art show so things were a bit displaced but I would go again another time. One item that was impressive to me is the old dugout canoe found in a local lake when the water level was low. I also found a grandfather clock built by my 7th great grandfather. Cool! Be aware they are only opened Thurs,Fri and Sat.See more..

5.0Muster Field Farm Museum(1 review) - Farm Days Event in August Speciality Museums • History Museums I had heard a lot about Farm Days at Muster Field, but this year was my first experience. A friends, her teen daughter, and I spent a couple hours walking the property, historic buildings, craftsmen's tents, and historic displays. Wish I'd had another hour or more because there was still more to see and do, including the wildflower gardens, food vendors, farm animals, antique farm trucks, and war encampment. We learned from talking to and watching the craftsmen, enjoyed a vegetable sandwich and homemade ice cream, watched historic farm equipment at work, and attended a special church service in the barn. 5.0Gilman Garrison House(1 review) - A one-of-a-kind colonial house Speciality Museums
The Gilman Garrison House is a rare surviving example of a First Period garrison house, built with a number of clearly defense-related features. Built in 1709 by Councillor John Gilman, a proprietor of sawmills and member of a prominent family involved in shipping, the 2 1/2-story T-shaped structure with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior is located at 12 Water Street in Exeter, New Hampshire. It stands near the eastern end of Exeter's historic waterfront commercial district. Today, it is owned by Historic New England, which operates the home as a house museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. In constructing his home, Gilman fortified it for protection. The oldest portion has a frame of oak timbers with heaving wooden planking forming its walls. The upper floor projects over the ground floor and there is evidence that the overhang originally had firing portholes in its floor. There also are wall structures indicating that part of the house could be isolated by means of a wooden portcullis.See more..
