The Dover Veterans Park was dedicated on Veterans Day in November 2017. The park was built on the grounds directly in front of the McConnell Center. That site was chosen because it is near some of the Dover memorial monuments and has a connection to Dover's most-distinguished veteran, USAF Capt. Joseph Christopher McConnell, a highly-decorated Dover native. He was a World War II Veteran who served in the US Army Air Forces and a Korean War Veteran in the USAF. He was the first Triple Jet Ace. He is presently still the top American Jet Ace. He shot down 16 MiG-15s. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Those are just three of his seventeen military decorations. The walkways into the center of the park were lined with commemorative bricks. Each one was engraved with the name, service branch, and rank of a Dover resident who served in the US Armed Forces. There were several groups of five or more bricks with the names of members of the same family. The seal of the City of Dover was in the center of the center of the park. Around the edge of the center of the park, there were five short pillars topped with bronze medallions. Each one bore the insignia of a branch of the US armed forces ~ Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. There are a few benches and two street lamps in the park. It was a fairly small, simple, tasteful park. I rate Dover Veterans Park at 4.50 and is worth a look when visiting Dover's downtown area. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.
