The Tuck Museum is home of the Hampton Historical Society. It consists of a number of buildings, a number of monuments, a well, and antique objects. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. On our visit, we took a guided tour with a docent who took us around to the Fire Museum, Barn, Schoolhouse, Well, and Beach Cottage. We learned that the town’s prime occupations were dairy farming, faming of salt hay, and fishing. We found the Fire Museum and Beach Cottage the most interesting. The Beach Cottage was a compact one-room building that really maximized the limited space with an efficient layout. We thought it was a nice museum. We’d return for another visit. Why wouldn’t you like it here? There is hiking/walking trails, a pond in the middle of the park, you can go fishing in it but don’t swim in it, there is a playground, a gorilla cage, and the old women who lived in a shoe! If you never been here this place used to be a zoo! Now you can still go inside the old animal cages! Especially convenient for me because there is a trail connecting from my neighborhood to the park so I go here a lot! There is also a dog park and they allow dogs on the trails! Also you can see a giant shoe! A awesome place to bring the whole family! See more..
5.0Muster Field Farm Museum(1 review) - Farm Days Event in August Speciality Museums • History Museums I had heard a lot about Farm Days at Muster Field, but this year was my first experience. A friends, her teen daughter, and I spent a couple hours walking the property, historic buildings, craftsmen's tents, and historic displays. Wish I'd had another hour or more because there was still more to see and do, including the wildflower gardens, food vendors, farm animals, antique farm trucks, and war encampment. We learned from talking to and watching the craftsmen, enjoyed a vegetable sandwich and homemade ice cream, watched historic farm equipment at work, and attended a special church service in the barn. Parking was easy; $5 donation requested. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking over uneven ground.See more..
5.0The Colonel Paul Wentworth House(1 review) - A REMARKABLE LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM & A TREASURE Speciality Museums • History Museums
The medium-sized Summersworth Historical Museum holds the history of the city from its early days to the present. On the day of my visit, one of my first questions was about the spelling: Summersworth. I learned that it was the original name. A clerical error at the New Hampshire State House recorded the name as Somersworth, based on the surname Somers. The museum has 19 rooms of different sizes just full of city memorabilia. Rooms that left lasting impressions on me included a replica of the mayor’s office with an antique desk, a room full of religious objects from various religions, a room showing manufacturing history with Somersworth Machine Co. stoves manufactured in the city, Gilbert & St. Hilaire Bottling, and memorabilia from General Electric, and two rooms full of athletic uniforms, T-shirts, etc. connected to the city’s schools and athletic teams. In a hallway downstairs, I came upon a little area that noted Somersworth’s artists and songwriters. It was there that I saw a watercolor of Vic’s Diner, a longtime eatery that dated back to 1946. The volunteer museum members were knowledgeable and friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and will go back another time to take in everything again. For the quality and number of historical items it holds, I rate Summersworth Historical Museum at 5.0. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..
One Saturday afternoon, I visited the Lee Historical Society Museum which I’d only recently discovered as it’s not in plain sight. I’d driven past it hundreds and hadn’t noticed it because it’s set back off the road at the same parking lot used for the library. Inside, I looked around. There were four exhibits that got my attention. One exhibit was titled The King’s Trees. That was about the logging industry to cut down large old Eastern White Pine Trees with a trunk that measured 12” or more in diameter for ship masts for the English Navy. This type of logging was common in the region. Another exhibit was Harvesting Ice in the winter. The whole process was explained. Third was also a display of early telephone equipment. Some was on loan from the New Hampshire Telephone Museum in Warner. Fourth was the whole room upstairs. It was mostly an old classroom and a collection of children’s chairs and toys. One corner of the room had an antique manual washing machine, a combination manual washboard and wringer for laundry, plus old irons. There were books for sale. One was a famous regional book titled Down the Mast Road which was a historical novel set early in the American Revolution about logging The King’s Trees for ship masts and getting them down the Mast Road into the rivers and then down to Portsmouth. Many communities in the area have streets named Mast Road that date back to that era. Although not large, this museum has a lot of Lee history exhibits worth seeing. I rate the Lee Historical Society Museum at 4.25. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.See more..
