this place is temporarily closed. Valkhof Museum conveys the story of 5,000 years of history with an impressive collection. We want to show how art and history color our world view. In this museum you will learn about the rich history of Nijmegen in important heydays such as the Roman era and the time of Charlemagne. At the time of the Romans, Nijmegen was a city on the Limes, the border of the Roman Empire, which now belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage. All masterpieces from this period can be found in this museum. In addition, there are regularly changing exhibitions on art, history and science. Valkhof Museum is located in a controversial building, designed by architect Ben van Berkel, on the historic Valkhof Park, in the heart of Nijmegen. The museum renewing and therefore closed untill 2025. From March the 1st the museum will open it's temporary location at Keizer Karelplein. See more..

    - Well worth a visit.

    Airborne at the bridge image
We spent an hour or so chatting to the friendly chaps there who were very knowledgeable about what happened on 17 September 1944 and, of course, the following days. They were keen to explain what actually happened and not as depicted in the film “A Bridge Too Far”. We learned that the current bridge is actually the 3rd one! The Dutch blew the first one up, then it was rebuilt and destroyed by bombing and the German retreating destroyed it. The bridges’ foundation is original. The small museum is free to enter with explanations and short films. Of course a great view of the current bridge from the seating area. Please leave a donation if you enjoyed the company - we did both. See more..
  7. 4.0 Anton Pieck Museum (93 reviews)

Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Art Museums • History Museums
    Anton Pieck Museum image
See more..

Oude Ambachten & Speelgoed Museum image
We have just arrived home having spent a very enjoyable day at the museum. We strolled casually through the museum and it took about 5 hours with a 30 minute lunch break. The artefacts are very interesting and provoked many memories. The only negative for me was the vast amount of things on display gave me major sensory overload. Although we were all adults, 41 plus years old, we thoroughly enjoyed the toy section with all of the interactive displays and the games were a lot of fun. Thoroughly worth a visit particularly if you want a walk down memory lane See more..

This museum was very interesting. It tells the story of the river Waal and the animals of the region. There was also a temporary exhibition about the fables of the animals. There are many stairs, but you are allowed to use the elevator if you have difficulty walking stairs. At various locations you will find a screen where you can read more information. On one of these screens you can try to load an old cannon in less than a minute. See more..
  11. 4.5 Librije Zutphen (59 reviews)
    - A step back in time!
Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • History Museums
    Librije Zutphen image
If you are at all interested in historic libraries, this is a place you must go! First of all, you will enjoy the wonderful architecture in Zutphen as you are making your way to the St. Walburgis Church. Once there, you must purchase a ticket for the library which also entitles you to a lovely tour of the church. My tour group was small - three women passionate about books and history - and the tour guide shared our enthusiasm. Once inside the library area, she really brought the story to life - one interesting fact was that it wasn’t quiet in there because people were proud that they could read, so they would read out loud to demonstrate their prowess. I felt very emotional upon thinking how hard it would be to want to know more about the world, literature, the arts and yet have so few opportunities to acquire this knowledge. This was truly a memorable experience for me. See more..

    Stadsmuseum Harderwijk image
Came across this wonderful place on a wet Sunday with friends and discovered one of the most wonderful museums we have ever visited. Located in a historic house in the centre of this beautiful town we were greeted with a genuine friendly welcome and given a guide to what we can discover within this unique building. Not only does this museum have a wonderful to story to tell about the town, it's people and its connection with the Hansa network as well as the fishing industry but it also has an amazing calendar of arts and cultural events. Although at the time when we visited they were between exhibitions, it clearly attracts the very best and has given us reason to come back again soon. Although many towns in Holland close up on a Sunday, if you are looking for a wonderful cultural, enlightening and enjoyable place to go then this is it. We couldn't believe that entry was only one Euro per person. This has to be best value that one Euro could ever buy! Thank you Stadsmuseum! See more..
  13. 4.0 Het Museonder in Nationaal Park de Hoge Veluwe (53 reviews)
    - Underground museum about the Veluwe landscape
Spent < 1 hour Natural History Museums
Het Museonder in Nationaal Park de Hoge Veluwe image
This museum provides information on the formation, history and ecology of the Veluwe. Knowing a bit more about the background of the national park and its environment proved very nice during me walks and bike rides in the Veluwe after our museum visit. It helped me understand the landscape from a different perspective and allowed me to see more of the plants and animals. As someone with a background in geology and paleontology, I thought the exhibition was interesting for both adults and kids, specialists and general public. Only downside were that the information was quite hard to read due to lack of light, and that the museum is a bit small and echoey, and can feel quite cramped with kids. See more..
  14. 4.0 Kasteel Ammersoyen (47 reviews)
    - Simple castle
Tuesday: Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles • History Museums
    Kasteel Ammersoyen image
Ammersoyen Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the country. When visiting the castle, built in the 1300‘s, you will immediately feel the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. You’re welcome to either explore the castle by yourself, or on a guided tour. While you walk around, you will visit the chambers of the keep, the knights’ hall and the women’s quarters. After taking the stairs inside the vast, meters thick walls, you reach the museum attic where the archaeological finds from the moat will give an impression of the castle’s history. Children will have an excellent time exploring: in the museum attic are all kinds of activities organised for them and in the weapon room they can try on parts of a body harness. The castle also boasts a gift shop and in the tavern you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat. Ammersoyen Castle organises events for young and old. Tours start throughout the day on set times. English tours can be given upon request. See more..

This is the small version of the Speelklok (or 'Van Speelklok tot Pierement') museum in Utrecht. Like that museum, this museum has music automatons of many kinds, which are enthusiastically demonstrated to the audience. Brandweermuseum Borculo image
Brandweermuseum Borculo shows an impressive collection of fire service related items. It is maintained well, but it does show some signs that the collection is starting to get outdated. Some of the displays are showing their age and more modern museums offer more interactivity. Four stars, because the collection is extensive, shows good breadth and is informative. If you are interested in fire service, this is a must see, if you are in the area and have a few hours to spare, you could do worse that giving this a visit. See more..
