It must have been restored after WWII because some of the old buildings in the center of the city, not far from the gate, still have damage (bullet holes) from the war. We were unable to go inside as we were there too late, but it gives a feel for the sort of buildings the town had in past centuries. I recently visited the small charming hanseatic town of Doesburg and I entered the big church,known as Martinikerk ,a late gothic basilica ,erected from medieval bricks.It was bulit in the 15 /16 century and of course it was restorated .I really liked the old pulpit dating from 1610,the cast -iron windows in and near the choir.There was an exhibition inside with photos about the church ,but only in Dutch....The 95 tower is the third highest tower in Netherlands,but in 1945 ,a day before Doesburg was liberated ,the occupying forces blew it up .The process of restoration started in 1959.I understood that only part of the bells and the carillon remained intact.Today the old clock was added to the war monument near Grote Kerk . We were met by the keeper of the mill on a Saturday afternoon. He was so welcoming and eager to show us around. We started by getting the canvas flaps unfurled.... he asked my nephew to climb the windblade with him to untie the flaps. We then helped him start the windblades and proceeded inside the mill. He took us all the way to the top floor of the mill, describing the inner workings of the mill, the purpose, the history, etc. He was incredibly informative. I believe he has been around this mill for 30+ years. The ladders going up thru the mill are narrow and may not be the best for those afraid of heights. But once a the top, there is a lovely view of the landscape below. Would highly recommend a tour of a mill with such a knowledgeable person as our guide in Zevenaar! See more..

De serene stilte ervaar je intens.Of het nu is voor een moment van gedenken aan overledenen, of om zomaar voor jezelf een rustmoment te vinden, het is een unieke plek hiervoor. Maar ook voor een concert, een koorgezang of voordracht: de akoestiek is goed en de sfeer intiem. Hier moet de stad Tiel zuinig op zijn.

Die Mühle wurde zwischen 2003 und 2008 vollständig renoviert. Sie ist am Montag und Samstag im Betrieb und kann bis oben besichtigt werden. Die 2 ehrenamtliche Müller erklären gerne über Geschichteund Technik. Eine nicht geplante Aktion, die uns sehr gefallen hat!

Though Dutch reformed the (formerly Catholic) church is dedicated to Saint Jacob, patron saint of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostella. Wat een fantastische plek die “Moezeköttel” waar we tijdens een fietstocht een tussenstop hebben gemaakt. Ooit stond hier een klein boerderijtje welke tijdens de bevrijding, in maart 1945, deels platgebombardeerd werd en door vrijwilligers en sponsoren weer in oude luister is hersteld. Met het zicht op de duitse grens en gelegen aan de Liberationroute, een geweldige fietsstop en picknickplaats. In een bijgebouwde schuur bevindt zich een toilet en educatie-/ koffie-ruimte en het gastenboek “vertelt” over de beleving van de (internationale) bezoekers.

Wat een geweldig initiatief van vrijwilligers en sponsoren, wij gaan hier zeker nog regelmatig terugkeren. See more..
