Stevenskerk, inspiring meeting place for art, culture and contemplation. Construction of the church started halfway the 13th century. In 1273 the church was consecrated by Albert Magnus, the Bishop of Cologne. Of this Roman Gothic church the groundwork and the most Western bays of the ship remain. Extensive construction took place in the course of the 15th century, among others the choir and the chapels. In the 16th century work was done on the transept and small part of the ship. After about 1650 construction stopped, which left the church unfinished. The tower was fitted with a new clock floor in the 15th century. During the bombing on Nijmegen February 22nd 1944, a large part of the tower collapsed. The South-Western part of the church was heavily damaged. Also in the period during the Second World War where Nijmegen was on the front the church incurred a lot of damage. After the WWII the church was thoroughly renovated. See more..

The monumental Romanesque Valkhofkapel-St.Nicolaaskapel was build in the year 1030.The early Romanesque architecture was inspired by the architecture of the "Paltskapel Aachen" in Germany build by Charlemagne. I enjoyed the fact that the chapel-interior was open to admire;the visit was free of charge but a 2euro donation is appreciated for the upkeep of the monument. Nijmegen's central Valkhof Park offers the ruins of the apsis of the 12th century Romanesque Sint Maartenskapel as well. The rest of the former Valkhof castle was demolished in the 18th century. In 1795 it was decided to demolish the former Valkhof castle damaged by the French attack on Willem 5 of Oranje-Nassau who was hiding in the Valkhof castle. The site of Valkhof-kapel and castle has been inhabited since Roman times making it one of the older monuments of the Netherlands comparable to Roman settlements at Voorburg( Zuid Holland) and Maastricht( Limburg). Visited the Koepelkerk twice, once for a free concert. The church has been renovated to a very high standard and has become a cultural meeting place. I joined a women's choir and one day later enjoyed a free concert. The sound is good, the location fabulous and the church holds many memories for me. A fantastic visit. See more..

This church is impressive for Dutch standards. It is not so big and remains a frank and cozy interior and atmosphere. Worth the detour and the visit. Be aware that the opening times are a bit off. Sometime between 1400 and 1630. And not every day! But please check! See more..

The size of the church is amazing for a small town. There's place for 750 people in the great St Nicolas church of Elburg. Dating back to 1395. Elburg must have been a very small town then. Now there are about 23.000 inhabitants. We were lucky the organ was being played when we visited. It has a lovely sound. Because of its size, the church has great acoustics as well. The paintings on the ceiling are a sheer delight. One can climb the tower. We did not, preferring the calm and quiet and the organ music. There a very informative leaflet in Dutch and in English. The church is located just off the main street of Elburg. It's visible from all sides of the old town of Elburg and beyond, because of its tower. We parked at the Schootveld parking, at the edge of the old town. Parking is free of charges. The church is maybe 5 minutes on foot from the parking. It's not a place for a pick nick. It's a church. The loccation of the church is in the centre of Lochem, quite big on the middle of the market square, not far from the shopping streets so you won't miss it. The church was not open because of the pandemic, but twice a year ( due to the circumstances ) carillon music can be heard from the tower. The church is also for social and cultural activities besides the services. There is a beautiful antique lamppost outside the church. See more..

An impressive historic exposition and video impression. Groll, Grol, as from 1627. The church was taken from the Catholics during the "Beeldenstorm period" in The Netherlands. Nowadays it is used for several cultural aspects and a smaller part remained for Sunday Church activities. See more..

As we saw that the church's door was opened, we decided to visit this church. From outside it looks not really special but when you entered this church you will see how beautiful it is. The stained glass windows, the painted ceiling and pillars, the ceramic wall by the altars, the floor.... they are all beautiful. There is a special altar for a pastor and a chaplain who were died in Dachau during the WW2. Due to Covid-19, the church benches were adjusted in 1.5m distance. It's recommended to take a look or taking a moment silent in this church. You can park the car near the castle. See more..

I recently visited the small charming hanseatic town of Doesburg and I entered the big church,known as Martinikerk ,a late gothic basilica ,erected from medieval bricks.It was bulit in the 15 /16 century and of course it was restorated .I really liked the old pulpit dating from 1610,the cast -iron windows in and near the choir.There was an exhibition inside with photos about the church ,but only in Dutch....The 95 tower is the third highest tower in Netherlands,but in 1945 ,a day before Doesburg was liberated ,the occupying forces blew it up .The process of restoration started in 1959.I understood that only part of the bells and the carillon remained intact.Today the old clock was added to the war monument near Grote Kerk . A day out wandering in Barneveld was nice. The centre is not big and when we saw the old church was open, we made a stop. Very friendly people in the church whom we talked to. The organ is the only beautiful interior. But outside, there is a very remarkable spot on the tower square, at the right side of the tower, the placet on the ground where Jan van Schaffelaar ( a cavalry officer ) jumped off from the church tower. This enormous churchbuilding in the center of the old town is missing a tower. It once was the highest structure in Gelre, but collapsed in 1797 and was never rebuilt. The architect Teunis Wittenberg assigned to restore the old church was a staunch supporter of the French revolution. Perhaps the reason for erecting a sober neoclassicist French style facade that is not well integrated with the remains of the 14th to 16th century gothic church. The result is not very appealing, but Lodewijk Napoleon ruling the Netherlands at the time of reconstruction must have been delighted. See more..

Everytime passing a church, we tried to visit it and take a walk around the church. There was a sign on the door that the church was closed so we walked around the church that is located in the middle of the graveyard, made some pictures and hit the road again. When visiting Hartenstein Airborne Museum do not forget to ask for the map to walk the perimeter route. You will come to the OLD CHURCH ( as named by the local Dutch people ) or the LONSDALE CHURCH in airborne history. It is a church from the 9th century, the tower from the 12th. Inside Major Lonsdale addressed the troops that had to defend part of the perimeter, in short fighting to the last man. Be sure you get not lost on your walk, partly in the park/wooded area and although the museum and main road very near, easy to become disoriented, the map is not that detailed and could be misleading, if not sure, ask a local the direction to Hartenstein Museum or the main road. It is very interesting and very originally arranged museum about the Battle of Arnhem. The church is located just a few hundred yards from the John Frost Bridge and makes a great addition to a visit to the "Airborne at the Bridge" museum. Since everything is located in the old church, with high aisles, the museum is truly unique. Particularly noteworthy is the large diorama on the site of the altar. The staff is an additional "added value" of this place - nice gentlemen who are really passionate about what they do and willingly answered various questions. It is really worth visiting this place! 15th century Gothic church in the center of Winterswijk. The tower was added later in the period 1507 - 1550. Inside it is light and quiet. Though Dutch reformed the (formerly Catholic) church is dedicated to Saint Jacob, patron saint of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostella. Moreover the reputation of Remigius (5th century bishop of Reims) is not undisputed, The foundations of this Gothic style church date from the late 1300s. Just two weeks before the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945 German soldiers blew up the historic churchtower. It fell on the nave. The villagers, immediately after the Germans had left, started to rebuild the church. In 1948 the new church was completed. It is an impressive building, especially the tower. Perhaps more inviting than the historic reformed church as this church is open more often and maybe more homely. Dedicated to Willibrordus, a 7th century Christian missionary of Anglo-Saxon origin. Opvallend aan deze compacte driebeukige kerk zijn de mooie verhoudingen .. toren, schip en koor zijn verschillend gedateerd maar vormen een harmonieus geheel. De onderste twee geledingen van de in het kerklichaam geïntegreerde toren zijn romaans en dateren uit de vroege 12e eeuw. De toren is grotendeels van tufsteen en heeft een mooi tentdak, wsl van veel latere datum. Het schip is ook grotendeels van tufsteen gebouwd en lijkt mij dus ouder dan het overwegend bakstenen, driezijdig gesloten koor. Ik lees dat sommige deskundigen menen, dat het koor voor het schip tot stand kwam. Enfin, zeker is dat koor en schip beide gebouwd zijn in de 1e helft 15e eeuw, in welke volgorde dan ook. Het is een mooie kerk, met grote spitsboogvensters en opvallend stoere steunberen. De consistoriekamer is een toevoeging uit 1870. Op het kerkplein een zandstenen dorpspomp uit 1898. See more..

Deze 14e eeuwse kapel ligt middenin het kleinste stadje van Nederland. Bronkhorst kreeg reeds in 1482 stadsrechten. Bij het stadje lag het 13e eeuwse Kasteel Bronkhorst. Dat kasteel bestaat niet meer, de restanten van het gebouw werden in de vroege 19e eeuw gesloopt. Gijsbert V, de toenmalige Heer van Bronkhorst en bewoner van het kasteel, liet in 1360 de Kapel van Bronkhorst bouwen. De kapel werd gewijd aan de Maagd Maria en aan Sint-Maarten. Bronkhorst werd in 1633 getroffen door een enorme stadsbrand, die veel schade aanrichtte aan huizen, kasteel en kapel. Bij de herstelwerkzaamheden kreeg de kapel, sedert ca. 1585 hervormd, haar huidige uiterlijk. Een klein zaalkerkje met toegangsportaal en op het dak een z.g. dakruiter, waarin een luidklok uit 1638. In de 19e eeuw was er weinig behoefte aan een kerkgebouw en verbouwde men, in 1842, de kapel tot school (zie foto). Het bleef een school tot in de 20e eeuw. In 1960-1961 werd de kapel ingrijpend gerestaureerd, hierbij gebruikte men gravures van de kapel uit de 18e eeuw. Het resultaat mag er wezen .. het mooie kapelletje staat te pronken in het centrum van het schitterende Bronkhorst. Het gebouw is thans een geliefde trouwlocatie en wordt gebruikt als expositie- en concertruimte. See more..

De hervormde dorpskerk van Beekbergen staat in het centrum van het dorp. Het is het enige echt oude gebouw in het dorp, waarvan de kern is gemoderniseerd. In de 11e eeuw werd op deze plek een roomse kerk gesticht, gewijd aan St. Fabianus en St. Sebastianus. Deze vroege kerk was aanmerkelijk kleiner dan de huidige .. romaans van bouwstijl met een smaller schip en een klein rechthoekig koor. De kerktoren was ook bescheiden van hoogte en omvang. Deze 11e eeuwse kerk was gebouwd van tufsteen. Bij de bouw van een opvolgende toren in de 13e eeuw, in gotische stijl, maakte men gebruik van de tufsteen van de romaanse toren. Dat is heden ten dage nog goed te zien aan met name de eerste geleding van de toren. Het driebeukige schip kwam in de 15e eeuw tot stand, het rond gesloten koor in de 14e eeuw. In de 15e eeuw werd de toren verder verhoogd. Hij bleef relatief laag, maar dat misstaat zeker niet. In 1867 kreeg de toren haar huidige spits, balustrade en opvallende hoektorentjes. Hoewel 19e eeuwse toevoegingen aan kerkgebouwen vaak matig geslaagd zijn, misstaan de 19e eeuwse hoektorentjes hier zeker niet. In de 16e eeuw werd het koor vergroot, hetgeen resulteerde in het huidige driezijdig gesloten koor, in gotische stijl. Wat het interieur betreft .. gewelven en pijlers gedecoreerd met midden 16e eeuwse beschilderingen, resterend uit de katholieke periode. Verder in het oude koor nog vroegere beschilderingen, o.a. scènes uit het Laatste Oordeel. Preekstoel midden 19e eeuw. Orgel ca. 1780, afkomstig uit de dorpskerk van Apeldoorn en hier halverwege de 19e eeuw geplaatst. Mooie, compacte kerk op ruim met grind bedekt terrein.

De Gasthuiskerk verrees begin 15e eeuw als kapel van het naastgelegen 14e eeuwse gasthuis. Een eenbeukige, bakstenen kapel in laat-gotische bouwstijl. Uiteraard was het een katholieke kapel. Hij werd gewijd aan Sint-Antonius. De slanke toren van drie geledingen werd midden 15e eeuw aan de kapel toegevoegd. Opvallend aan de kapel is het rechtgesloten koor. Wellicht uit ruimtegebrek. Tijdens de Reformatie verloor de katholieke gemeenschap haar kapel, wsl rond 1580. Sinds 1735 huisvestte de kerk lange tijd de Evangelisch-Lutherse gemeenschap van Doesburg. Naast de kerk, toegankelijk via twee poortjes, het Gasthuishofje. Het 14e eeuwse gasthuis bestaat niet meer. In het hofje vinden we 16e eeuwse provenierswoninkjes. Hier woonden oude Doesburgers, die zich met een eenmalig bedrag inkochten en levenslang waren verzekerd van kost en inwoning. Kerk is mooi en sober .. hofje met haar witgepleisterde woninkjes charmant. Tegenwoordig is de kerk vooral multifunctioneel cultureel centrum (theater, concerten, exposities e.d.). See more..

Reeds in de 16e eeuw is er sprake van een Oud-Katholieke gemeenschap in Culemborg. In 1578, tijdens de z.g. Reformatie, werd deze gemeenschap uit haar kerk verjaagd en namen de protestanten het gebouw over. De Oud-Katholieken waren voor de volgende 258 jaar aangewezen op een schuilkerk, die stond in de tuin van een huis op de Varkensmarkt 20, naast de huidige kerk. Het huidige pand op nr. 20, daterend uit 1840, is thans de pastorie. In 1836 werd het de Oud-Katholieke gemeenschap weer toegestaan een kerk te betrekken. Zij bouwden toen, vlakbij de schuilkerk, de huidige kerk op nr. 18, met ernaast de pastorie op nr. 20. De kerk werd gewijd aan Sint Barbara (patrones van Culemborg) en Sint Antonius. Het is een zaalkerkje met een mooie neo-classisistische deurlijst, e.e.a. naar ontwerp van een plaatselijke stucadoor. Boven de ingang staat te lezen "Pantocratori", vrij vertaalt "Jezus Alregeerder". In de voorgevel mooie puntboogvensters met glas-in-lood. Kerk dicht ivm corona, maar plaatjes tonen een interieur met barokelementen en een kleine halfronde apsis. In deze kerk vinden soms ook culturele evenementen plaats, zoals concerten. See more..
