A lovely place to visit specially in the summer. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the tour without a guide in February. There is audio at certain points (only Dutch). Lots of information about the forestry projects and tools used. The coach house is used for catering now. It has been renovated beautifully. Kasteel Huis Bergh in 's Heerenberg is een kasteel zoals een kasteel hoort te zijn. Met een slotgracht, een ophaalbrug, wapperende vlaggen, rood-wit gekleurde luiken en verdedigingstorens. Eens was het imposante kasteel het stamslot van de machtige heren en graven Van den Bergh. Tegenwoordig kan iedereen zich terugtrekken in een kasteeltoren en zich baden in luxe. Twee van de drie oorspronkelijke verdedigingstorens op de voorburcht van kasteel Huis Bergh zijn ingericht als luxueuze suites voor twee personen. Daar kunt u de sfeer van de Middeleeuwen proeven en de intimiteit ervaren van de dikke kasteelmuren, de nisjes en de smalle wenteltrap. Tegelijkertijd laat de luxe inrichting van de suites niets te wensen over. Ze zijn voorzien van alle gemakken zoals een moderne badkamer, draadloos internet en een flatscreen. A visit to this castle. It is located in a beautiful laid out park where one can walk. Great views from the gardens and Orangerie where one can get something light to eat or drink. An impressive rose garden and well kept. Our guided tour was very interesting as the guide knew a lot and was good at it. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. A sunny dry day is an extra plus.See more..

This is a gem, really well executed with the vantage point on top giving a great view of the split in the Rhine as well as give you some great info about what you are looking at in the different directions of the compass. Great for families with school children, great for the curious historian or the traveller that wants to see something a little off the beaten track. Great restaurant close by as well as the restaurant inside the fort. Nice to have the electric tuk-tuks for those that need a ride from the parking lot. Great modern take on a historic place! Bring sensible walking shoes and take the hike to the tip and the "split of the Rhine" as well.See more..

The first mention of Middachten appears in the year 1190, and although the castle dates from the early Middle Ages, the house in its present form was built towards the end of the 17th century and still includes some medieval parts. Middachten is unique in that it is still a real, working estate. Besides the castle, park and gardens, the estate also includes farms, woods and agricultural land. The Middachten gardens came into existence at the beginning of the 18th century. Shortly after the rebuilding of the castle was completed in 1697, a formal baroque garden was laid with box hedge parterres. In the second half of the 18th century fashions and the taste of the inhabitants changed and the gardens were altered in English Landscape style. The gardens as you see them now came into being around 1900, when they brought back garden elements of the former baroque style into the landscaped gardens. Absolutely stunning Only saw the castle from the outside . We saw the chef who was picking beautiful fresh vegetables from the garden , they are turning it into a bed and breakfast , it’s lovely to see and take pictures of ...beautiful insect hotel , it’s a little place especially for insects , stunning gardens and beautiful old bridge ! Huis Verwolde is a stately home from 1777. It was inhabited for more than 200 years by six generations of the noble Van Der Borch Van Verwolde family. The house is now lavishly furnished in an 'upstairs/downstairs' style, inspired by the family. It is open to the public during the tourist season from April 1 to October 31.See more..
The Ampsen castle is a private property so it's not open for the public but we can have a walk in the estate. Batenburg was near our planned cycle tour, but once we were there we definitely enjoyed the "Eendenkooi", canal, old ruin, windmill, so we decided to cycle around a bit. Nice ruin, and a very nice house next to it with a great garden full with flowers. Ruin seems to be used for outdoor theater, and we noticed some pamphlets in the area promoting a play called "Slopend" Not sure if it ever opens for tours, but I would guess not with the theater props permanently there.See more..

Op de plek van de huidige toren verrees reeds in de 12e eeuw een verdedigingstoren, een z.g. donjon. In de vroege 16e eeuw was deze toren in slechte staat. Daarom gaf de toenmalige heerser over de streek, een hertog van Gelre, opdracht tot de bouw van een nieuwe verdedigingstoren. Aldus geschiedde, in 1535 verrees op de fundamenten en kelders van de vervallen 12e eeuwse toren een nieuw verdedigingswerk. De eigenaar van toren in de 19e eeuw, toen de donjon al lang zijn defensieve waarde had verloren, was in eerste instantie voornemens de toren versneld te laten vervallen tot een ruïne. Men noemt dit soort kunstmatige ruïnes ook wel "follies"; zij dienden ter decoratie. Maar deze eigenaar van de toren zag hier uiteindelijk van af. Hij liet in 1868 de toren vanaf de parterre opbouwen in neo-gotische stijl, ook wel Willem II stijl genoemd. Zo ontstond de namaak middeleeuwse toren, min of meer zoals wij die nu voor ons zien. Dus 12e eeuwse fundamenten/kelders, van buiten niet zichtbaar, een 16e eeuwse parterre, waarboven een opbouw uit de 19e eeuw. Het ziet er weliswaar romantisch uit, maar echt mooi kan ik het niet vinden. De spitsdaken en de lelijke balcons doen pijn aan de ogen. Maar smaken verschillen .. liefhebbers van de Willem II neo- gotiek zullen het prachtig vinden. Het landgoed heeft een zeer lange oprijlaan, zo'n 800 meter, geflankeerd door mooie oude eiken. De oprijlaan is gesloten voor autoverkeer, bij de ingang is geen parkeergelegenheid en de wandelmogelijkheden bij de toren zijn beperkt. Als je er toch bent, kijk ook even naar een aardige 19e eeuwse (?) orangerie, bij de toren.See more..
