Monumental Manor House
The first mention of Middachten appears in the year 1190, and although the castle dates from the early Middle Ages, the house in its present form was built towards the end of the 17th century and still includes some medieval parts. Middachten is unique in that it is still a real, working estate. Besides the castle, park and gardens, the estate also includes farms, woods and agricultural land. The Middachten gardens came into existence at the beginning of the 18th century. Shortly after the rebuilding of the castle was completed in 1697, a formal baroque garden was laid with box hedge parterres. In the second half of the 18th century fashions and the taste of the inhabitants changed and the gardens were altered in English Landscape style. The gardens as you see them now came into being around 1900, when they brought back garden elements of the former baroque style into the landscaped gardens. B&B: there are three stylish double rooms above the coach house, each with its own character.

Beautiful castle with gardens
The estate is (well) managed by Franz zu Ortenburg, the 25th lord of the manor. It gives you a good idea of how the Dutch upper class used to live in past centuries. Though the present structure still shows parts of its medieval origin, most of the manor was built in 1698 after the invading French army earlier devastated the old castle. The gardens, partly in formal Baroque style, are of particular interest. One can only imagine how much time and effort was made to achieve this spectacular result. A pity the entrance fee (6€) poses a barrier for access by people with low incomes and close rather early at 4:30PM.

A lovely afternoon walk
Kasteel Middachten offers an escape from the everyday world. Though out the year there are numerous activities that are held at this castle. But I love biking to it and then walking through the gardens.
