Tuesday: 10:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
    Stevenskerk image
Stevenskerk, inspiring meeting place for art, culture and contemplation. Construction of the church started halfway the 13th century. In 1273 the church was consecrated by Albert Magnus, the Bishop of Cologne. Of this Roman Gothic church the groundwork and the most Western bays of the ship remain. Extensive construction took place in the course of the 15th century, among others the choir and the chapels. In the 16th century work was done on the transept and small part of the ship. After about 1650 construction stopped, which left the church unfinished. The tower was fitted with a new clock floor in the 15th century. During the bombing on Nijmegen February 22nd 1944, a large part of the tower collapsed. The South-Western part of the church was heavily damaged. Also in the period during the Second World War where Nijmegen was on the front the church incurred a lot of damage. After the WWII the church was thoroughly renovated. See more..

I enjoyed a city sightseeing by walking for a day. Most of the sites are located in a city center and reachable by foot. - St. Stephen’s Church is simple and religious, climbing up to the top is fun. - walking around along the Main Street is really fun to stop by at food trucks and shops, see historical buildings. - if you get tired, Valkhof park is a nice park to relax. You can see the ruin of the church there. - the central station area shows a typical Netherlandish things.. bicycle lanes with signals for bicycles. I loved bicycle stoppers near the station. uploaded the photo. - I regret I couldn’t see muZIEum. Better to book ahead. I jumped in when it opened in the morning but told fully booked for the Saturday. Please walk a lot energetically, then you’ll find the charms of this pretty city a lot! See more..

Approach the fortified town from the harbour side or from the land side, called Oostendorp, the "Vischpoort", the 16th century gate in the fortifications, is a landmark which will come into the picture immediately. Ammersoyen Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the country. When visiting the castle, built in the 1300‘s, you will immediately feel the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. You’re welcome to either explore the castle by yourself, or on a guided tour. While you walk around, you will visit the chambers of the keep, the knights’ hall and the women’s quarters. After taking the stairs inside the vast, meters thick walls, you reach the museum attic where the archaeological finds from the moat will give an impression of the castle’s history. The Man With Two Hats monument symbolizes dualities. It represents the end of the horrors of war but in the same vein the peace and freedom. It symbolizes the two countries of Canada and the Netherlands. The outstretched arms symbolize the liberation of the Netherlands and also the reaching out of country to country. With the donation of this monument, the Netherlands pays a lasting tribute to Canada. A statue identical to this one stands in Ottawa, Ontario. The twin monuments symbolically the solidarity between Canada and the Netherlands. The location is just on the opposite of "De Naald" a famous monument of Apeldoorn. It is not really an attraction unless you are interested in the history of war See more..

Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
Grote Kerk, Elst, The Netherlands image
This is a very interesting church built upon many older churches and a Roman temple. The older parts are only viewable with a tour but there are Roman and other older artifacts on display inside the church. I visited on Saturday and suspect that tours are not offered on that many days. If in Elst, this is definitely worth a visit. Elst is short train ride away from Arnhem. See more..

  22. 4.5 Nijkerk (17 reviews)
    - Nijkerk, my home town
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Nijkerk image
Nijkerk is located in the center of The Netherlands. Close to water, forest, dunes and our national wildlife park De Hoge Veluwe. It's a small town, but offers a lot: a great variety of restaurants and bars, fit for every taste. We don't even need to go shopping in the 'big city' Amersfoort, as all we would need can be bought locally. People are friendly and the old city center has a certain kind of cosyness (gezelligheid). I came to live here almost 40 years ago, and won't be leaving any time soon. Nijkerk is home. See more..

Biked to the iron age farm, called Celtic fields, close to Lunteren. Partly because I was curious but also to just have something to bike to in the beautiful Veluwe area. I liked the farm and saw more people going there but I am not sure I was very impressed. I just miss some signs that explain a bit more. Still a nice place to stop during a bike ride, there is also a nice picknick area next to it. See more..

The loccation of the church is in the centre of Lochem, quite big on the middle of the market square, not far from the shopping streets so you won't miss it. The church was not open because of the pandemic, but twice a year ( due to the circumstances ) carillon music can be heard from the tower. The church is also for social and cultural activities besides the services. There is a beautiful antique lamppost outside the church. See more..

This steam powered pumping station has a rich history. That history is still kept alive and every week you can visit the building and hear from enthousiastic volunteers about the workings and the history. About once a month the steam engine is actually fired up and functioning as in the old days. But in the weeks in between the enthousiastic story is worth your time as well. Very friendly people and it offers a look back in time. See more..
  30. 4.0 Waterpoort te Zaltbommel (11 reviews)
    - The Gate to The River Waal
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Waterpoort te Zaltbommel image
Waterpoort te Zaltbommel is the only remaining city gate, a part of the 14th century city walls. You can see next to the gate a remnant of the city wall, with two arches ( now it's a liquor store ). Well, it's something monumental but I'd prever seeing the bridge over the river. There are also statues of boys with left arm up to the river, one on the boulevard (bust) and the other is next to the water See more..

    - Beautiful Interior
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
    Katholieke St Pancratiuskerk image
As we saw that the church's door was opened, we decided to visit this church. From outside it looks not really special but when you entered this church you will see how beautiful it is. The stained glass windows, the painted ceiling and pillars, the ceramic wall by the altars, the floor.... they are all beautiful. There is a special altar for a pastor and a chaplain who were died in Dachau during the WW2. Due to Covid-19, the church benches were adjusted in 1.5m distance. It's recommended to take a look or taking a moment silent in this church. You can park the car near the castle. See more..

This farm is a combined campground and restored farm. It was run by some eccentric sisters, who reverted to the methods of their parents when their brother (who is described as more progressive) died. The farm is only accessible by tour, and the tour guide only speaks Dutch, but there are some English notes that you can follow. This is a work in progress but does show the lifestyle of the time. It sometimes happens: a building is demolished except for a tower or a chimney. The remaining structure than survives for considerable time and stands lost in new surroundings. Almost tragic the 16th century gothic style tower of the former commandery of St. John is such a remainder. Later named after Linnaeus the famous Swedish scholar who studied at Harderwijk university and who most probably had no affinity for medieval orders at all. See more..
