In 1361, a knight called Diederic Loef of Horne built a castle in the middle of the Dutch countryside where the Meuse and Waal rivers converged. At the time, this was a perfect location for levying tolls. Today, it’s the ideal spot for a day out with friends and family. You can also use the castle as a venue for your parties or conventions, or even as a place to spend the night. There’s something there for everyone, be it in the castle, on the outer bailey or in the garrison. In the museum, you can learn virtually everything there is to know about Hugo Grotius, the Middle Ages and the Hollandic Water Line. Learn about weapons and gunpowder, or get your feet wet battling high water in the cellars! Everyone gets a key to discover everything they could ever want to know about the castle. Find out for yourself!

    Great discovery
On the piece of a land where two rivers Meuse and Waal meet each other and form Merwede one can admire built in 14th century castle of Louvestein named after its founder, the knight Dirk Luf van Horn. The Louvestein Fortress also served as a defensive structure for the Years, actually this castle did never belong to any of the Nobel families as usually the castles did. It’s also been served as a prison for some time. The most significant prisoner was the famous diplomat, poet, humanist and lawyer Hugo De Grote, who received a life sentence for his intra Calvinistic disputes in Dutch Republic. He managed to escape the prison in a wooden chest for books and he fled to Paris. As this happened in the 17th century,I wonder if Hugo was not the prototype of Alexander Duma’s “ Monte Cristo” ?! Anyways, this place is pretty much recommended to visit. This days it’s a very well managed museum of the Middle Ages , playground for kids and a zen nature place.

    Good experience
The castle is very interesting. However, if you do not book in the advance via internet, then staff will ask you to return (instead of giving instructions). We fixed it by booking online after first attempt. We went by water bus. It is recommended to check and have the schedule in advance from riveer.nl or from boat personnel. We had to ask around to know about the right time. For a rainy day, this might be trick since the area does not have any big waiting lounge.
