Airborne at the bridge, Gelderland Province, The Netherlands

4.5 (129 reviews) Spent Ranking #7 in Arnhem Military Museums • History Museums

Well worth a visit.

We spent an hour or so chatting to the friendly chaps there who were very knowledgeable about what happened on 17 September 1944 and, of course, the following days. They were keen to explain what actually happened and not as depicted in the film “A Bridge Too Far”. We learned that the current bridge is actually the 3rd one! The Dutch blew the first one up, then it was rebuilt and destroyed by bombing and the German retreating destroyed it. The bridges’ foundation is original. The small museum is free to enter with explanations and short films. Of course a great view of the current bridge from the seating area. Please leave a donation if you enjoyed the company - we did both.

    Do Stop By
This is a small museum, free to enter, that tells the story of the battle for the bridge at Arnhem is September 1944, primarily through three combatants: one British, one German, and one Dutch, all of whom died during the battle. There actually isn't a great deal to see within the museum; a few items of memorabilia, interpretation boards telling the story of the three, a video set in the lower level and s small book / gift shop. Coffee can be purchased within by buying a token from the counter. However, two things make the museum worth stopping by: the enthusiasm and knowledge of the volunteers, and the view of the bridge through the large windows, that puts everything inside into context.

    The Bridge history
Part of the circuit if your interested in the history of Arnhem around Sept 44. The museum is free of charge and you are able to make a donation should you wish to. There are a couple of audio visual presentations, making the information concise and clear. Various photos and information boards plus good views of the existing bridge.
