Things to do & places to visit in Arnhem, Gelderland Province, The Netherlands

Arnhem cover image
A sizable city in its own right, Arnhem is best known today as the site of one of the most famous battles of World War II. Given city rights in 1233, it has long been at the center of conflicts because of its strategic location on the banks of the Rhine River. The Battle of Arnhem, part of Operation Market Garden, was fought in September 1944. Advancing Allied forces, in large part due to a series of mistakes, failed to secure a key bridge and suffered defeat, delaying the Allied advance into Germany until the following spring. The 1977 movie "A Bridge Too Far" was based on the events here.

    Burgers' Zoo and Safaripark image
On March 31, 1913, Faisanterie Buitenlust, the forerunner of the current modern animal park Burgers' Zoo, opens its doors to the public for the first time. Since its foundation by Johan Burgers, the first owner and the one who named the animal park in Arnhem, the park has always remained a real family business. Already from its inception the zoo caused a sensation due to its daring new organisation, which naturally is in the way the animals' accommodations are shaped as well as in the way the experiences for the visitors are created. Burgers' Zoo has a rich history, which has shaped the zoo into the way it is today, and as you can still find it now in the wooded area just north of Arnhem. See more..

    Park Sonsbeek image
What a lovely park! I was struck by the beauty and the variety of experiences to be enjoyed here - a meandering stream, waterfalls, bridges, formal gardens, fountains, city views, forested areas, meadows, a pasture with cows, numerous paths/trails, peaceful ponds with swans, geese and ducks, benches scattered throughout, and several excellent eating establishments. Such a serene place to spend time. As a bonus, it's conveniently close to the central railroad station (5 minute walk). It is worth a trip to Arnhem just to experience this park. I look forward to returning to spend more time in this magical place. See more..

  7. 4.5 Airborne at the bridge (129 reviews)
    - Well worth a visit.

    Airborne at the bridge image
We spent an hour or so chatting to the friendly chaps there who were very knowledgeable about what happened on 17 September 1944 and, of course, the following days. They were keen to explain what actually happened and not as depicted in the film “A Bridge Too Far”. We learned that the current bridge is actually the 3rd one! The Dutch blew the first one up, then it was rebuilt and destroyed by bombing and the German retreating destroyed it. The bridges’ foundation is original. The small museum is free to enter with explanations and short films. Of course a great view of the current bridge from the seating area. Please leave a donation if you enjoyed the company - we did both. See more..

    Museum Vliegbasis Deelen image
A great experience, well worth the trip even though it is only open at weekends. This is an establishment run by volunteer staff, purely for the joy of giving information. The museum is on the site of an old German airfield used during the Second World War. However do not rely on your Sat Nav as we ended up on the Army Firing Range, you need to travel about a mile and a half up the main road. See more..

  15. 4.5 St. Walburgiskerk (4 reviews)
    - Museum rather than a church!
Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
    St. Walburgiskerk image
It is very interesting and very originally arranged museum about the Battle of Arnhem. The church is located just a few hundred yards from the John Frost Bridge and makes a great addition to a visit to the "Airborne at the Bridge" museum. Since everything is located in the old church, with high aisles, the museum is truly unique. Particularly noteworthy is the large diorama on the site of the altar. The staff is an additional "added value" of this place - nice gentlemen who are really passionate about what they do and willingly answered various questions. It is really worth visiting this place! - Historically interesting
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
    Museum Bronbeek image
As the Dutch East Indies is very much part of my family history it was very interesting to visit this museum. From the start to the end of the Dutch colonial era everything was displayed. The stories I had heard from my father and grandmother had extra meaning. Outside is also the memorial to the various hell ships lost during WWII. For me seeing the plaque for the Junyo Maru torpedoed accidently by the British on which my grandfather lost his life had special meaning. See more..

Sabelspoort of Eusebiuspoort uit 1357 image
This is a well preserved gate and part of a wall that used to be part of the city of Arnhem. It must have been restored after WWII because some of the old buildings in the center of the city, not far from the gate, still have damage (bullet holes) from the war. Well worth seeing if visiting Arnhem. See more..

    Historische Kelders image
A tour through the historic cellars is nice and interesting. Many cellars have been connected underground, so you get to see quite some space. The stories about their original function and subsequent use are interesting. The spaces themselves are a bit dull though. Still worth a visit if you like history, or if you just want to do something different from the ordinary. See more..
