THE LONGEST CHURCH OF THE NETHERLANDS The great fire of 1552 destroyed much of the medieval church of Saint John. Shortly after the disaster, the council commissioned the reconstruction of the most startling church of Holland. With 123 meters it is also the longest church in The Netherlands THE 72 STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS ARE WORLD-FAMOUS Entering the Church of St. John, one falls silent at the sight of the majestic space with the 72 world-famous stained-glass windows. That first experience will only get stronger when you see the marvellous light by the 'Dutch Masters' invading the Church. The rich history of Holland can be read in the large windows. It is a beginning of an impressive discovery along biblical and historical scenes of human emotions. Then you understand that the Gouda St. John is one of the highest rated attractions in the Netherlands! See more..
  4. 4.5 Grote Kerk (425 reviews)
    - Once the center of Dutch religious life
Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
    Grote Kerk image
After decades of construction work, the church took its present shape in 1470. The tower was never completed, because of insufficient foundation in the swampy soil of the island. Considering Dordrecht had just 8000 inhabitants early 1400s, the enormity of the structure is amazing. Within just a few decades Dordrecht had reached the status of wealthiest city in Holland and eventually took the lead in the revolt against Spanish rule. The interior is sober, as after the Reformation in 1572 when Protestants took over, sculpture work was removed and frescos covered. Recently partly undone (see photo). Entrance fee 4€ includes access to the tower. See more..

Doing a 'stadswandeling' - a guided walk -in Brielle is a great way to explore the historic centre. We picked up the guide from the tourist information and did the Oranje walk, giving us enough little insights to even keep our teenagers interested. The walk is clearly described (incl. map) in the guide. See more..

    - 16th Century church in a new setting
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
    Dorpskerk image
The church is the oldest building in Spijkenisse. It dates from 1521, the tower was finished a little bit later. Urban planners ensured the prominent position of the church was not lost. There is a lot of free space around the church and (historic) replica buildings as well as the modern library form a pleasant composition. As in most protestant churches the interior is sober and simple in order not to distract the believers from worship of the one and only... See more..

    Sint Agathakerk image
As we're in the bulb area we passed this church and decided to visit it. We were glad that we stopped and were able to enjoy the beauty of this church. For a catholic church in the Netherlands, this church is quite a new one ( 1902-1903 ) so I would not say that the painting on the wall or ceiling are seccos. But the church's wall are all covered with colour, as well painting as ceramic. With all the stainned glass windows I can say it is a beautiful church. It is worth a visit. See more..

See more..

We came across this church by chance - we were walking from the Waterbus station on the river into the old town centre of Dordrecht. And this smallish building is not immediately on Voorstraat - it is set back slightly and is behind an iron gate and some iron railings. Beautiful from the outside and very very beautiful on the inside. We think it was built on the mid 19th century though the history of the site is earlier than that. Fasciinating, impressive and very special inside. See more..

    - Modest historic village church in a peaceful environment
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
    Dorpskerk Rockanje image
A bit hidden behind a modern shopping complex, this small village church is the oldest building in Rockanje. Already mentioned in 1389 as a place of worship the Christian believers have restored, added, renovated and maintained their church until this day. A pity the site has not been given more prominence in Rockanje' s center. In their 'modernization' drive city planners did an awful job by prioritizing new businesslike architecture and consumerism. Visited in March by bicycle from Rotterdam (just over 80 km up and down). If you cycle here choose a day without too much wind. See more..

See more..

Though in Gothic style the colossal structure looks a bit over the top. Perhaps the most remarkable part of the church is the 15th century tower. It survived due to extensive restoration work in tthe period 1927-1934. Concrete reinforcements were used to keep it standing. Olivier van Noort's grave is in the church. The great Dutch explorer died in Schoonhoven in 1627. See more..

    - A place of tragedy, faith, hope and the future of an everlasting life
Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
Bedevaartskerk H.H. Martelaren van Gorcum image
The very worthy church is dedicated to the the martyrs of the atrocities which happened during the "foundation" of the Netherlands. The so called watergeuzen imprisoned 19/23 monks and priests living in Gorcum during the fight of the Spanish government of the Spanish Netherlands in 1572. The only fault of those martyrs was to be Catholic in a very wild protestant area. Far from understanding the gospel, the watergeuzen hanged all of them in a barn at the site of the church. The martyrs and confessors found their final rest in this wonderful catholic church built in the 1930. It is a place to worship and to pray for the murderers, the forgiveness of our sins and the conversion of protestants to be unified with the only holy church of Christ again and for His only truth, His only way and the everlasting life with Him. This small church is particularly attractive because of its setting. The Hague agglomeration and the glass warehouses of Westland are not far away, but 't Woudt has retained its original rural surroundings. The oldest part of the church is the early 14th century tower. The nave dates from the mid 1500s. The church is still a center of the Protestant community. Occasionally there are concerts. See more..

    Monster Hervormde Kerk image
The original historic church burned down in 1901. After the fire the church was restored using the 1450s format. It is an enormous building, but not monstrous. The name of the village Monster is most probably derived from the Latin word 'monasterium', a name not just used for monasteries, but also for important churches such as this one. The original medieval church was dedicated to Machutus, a saint believed to be able to cure epilepsy. For centuries Monster was an important place of pilgrimage. Of course the tradition ended after the Reformation. The church is still the center of the Protestant community in Monster. See more..

    - Beautiful example of Dutch Gothic style architecture
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
    Dorpskerk image
In contrast to Brabant where Gothic style churches are heavier and perhaps more exuberant, the Protestant village church of Schipluiden is sober and light. The adjustments came about, because of the softer soils in Holland. The result is a structure that blends in better with the surroundings. Its outside appearance is beautiful. The interior is maybe a bit somber, white and brown being the dominant colors, but sincere and inviting contemplation. Open for visitors during the summer on Saturdays 1 to 4PM. Free entry. Most villages in Hoeksewaard have century-old historic churches, but Zuid Beijerland has a new style church built in 1933. The year before the old church was struck by fire and burnt down. The Protestant believers, both orthodox and Dutch reformed got together. They called their new church 'Eendrachtskerk' ('eendracht' meaning unity with a connotation of together more capable). At the location of the historic church, south of Dorpsstraat 175 and 177 there is still the old churchyard that can be visited. See more..

    Oude Kerk image
The old church in the center of Naaldwijk dates from 1472. Sponsors were the Lords of Naaldwijk. The church tower is roughly 200 years older and shows signs of both Roman (friezes) and Gothic (windows) styles, a combination prevalent at the time. The interior is sober and perhaps because of that the building is suited for other than just religious purposes. Hope this will not damage the historic structure. See more..

A modest Dutch reformed church in the center of Hellevoetsluis. It was built in 1661. The tower was completed in 1693. I liked the sober interior, no distraction as in so many Catholic churches. Remarkable is the position of the pulpit, right in the middle at the spot where in Catholic churches usually the central altar is. A simple communion table has been placed in front of it. The church was open when I visited on a Saturday afternoon. Friendly believers willing to communicate with visitors. See more..

Built in the period 1475 - 1500 this attractive Gothic style church is located in the center of Heerjansdam. The church underwent restoration in 1992 and most recently in 2006. A pity it is closed to the public most of the time. The Dutch reformed community (PKN) is still using the premises. See more..

    - Historic landmark with a long tradition
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
This fine Protestant church is located in the center of Oud-Alblas. The tower is the oldest part of the structure and dates from around 1400. The tower is, as it were embedded in a newer construction that was built in the mid 1800s. The sober interior reflects the Protestant interpretation of Christianity: pulpit from where the word of God is taught, no distracting sculptures or paintings. Remarkable is the text with the twelve commandments next to the pulpit. The website of the Protestant community mentions that ever since the first minister Hendrikus Swalmius started preaching 400 years ago, more than 40,000 sermons were held in this church. That is to say post-Reformation, as the Christian community started gathering at this place already in the 1400s. See more..

    - Protestant focus
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
Built after the Reformation in 1646 as a Protestant church which it still is. The square brick tower dates from the same year. The simple, sober design reflects very well the mindset of the Protestant community at the time: no distraction, no superfluous ornamentation, but focus. Hazerswoude-dorp was built on moor. The surroundings were dug out and as a result are significant lower than the village floor. Note the front door of the church is almost 2 meters above the original ground level. A newly built ramp ensures people with a stroller or in a wheelchair can access the church. See more..
