You can see this 35m high lift bridge from far away. Dating from the mid 1930s it is part of the improved Gouwe waterway between Rotterdam and Amsterdam. It must have been quite spectacular sight at the time, because of its technological wonders and it still is. Cycling from Rotterdam to Amsterdam through the green heart of Holland you will come across this bridge. In case the bridge is open you can follow a beautiful bicycle path along the west side off the Gouwe towards Alphen.aan de Rijn, thus avoiding waiting time. See more..

The heydays of the city of Dordrecht were roughly between 1300 and 1650. From this period few buildings have survived, but the pattern of the historic city, more or less, has remained the same today. The main waterway Voorstraathaven and Wijnhaven -used to be the flow of the Thure river ending in the Merwede- is the heart of the city. Along its quays the historic center emerged and grew. Between Groothoofd and the Grote Kerk medieval structures were replaced with 18 and 19th century buildings in different styles (Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicist). Walk through Wijnstraat and Voorstraat, visit the area around Hof van Nederland and you will get a good impression of the old town. We did not do the boat tour, but probable it would add another angle to your perspective. See more..

From the mid 1930s until now this Hefbrug (Lift bridge) has been working as it should with only very short intervals like in 2011 (disruption due to power failure) and in 2012 when a renovation took place and bikelanes were added on both sides. In Boskoop and Alphen are bridges of a similar design. They were constructed during a process of canalization of the Gouwe river, which is an essential route for boat traffic between Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Over the years these monumental lift bridges over the Gouwe have become part of the landscape and can be seen from far away. For me as a cyclist good for orientation. See more..

Oude Dame brug en sluis Strijensas image
Oude Dame (Old Lady) is the nickname for the bridge built over the lock at Strijensas. The dignified bridge dates from 1908 and was recently restored, a job well done. The nearby lock from 1649 is historically more important as it provided access by boat to Strijen 5 km towards the northeast. Though built during her life time, the nickname Oude Dame is not linked with Suze Groeneweg, first female member of the Dutch parliament who was born in Strijensas in 1875. See more..
