From the mid 1930s until now this Hefbrug (Lift bridge) has been working as it should with only very short intervals like in 2011 (disruption due to power failure) and in 2012 when a renovation took place and bikelanes were added on both sides. In Boskoop and Alphen are bridges of a similar design. They were constructed during a process of canalization of the Gouwe river, which is an essential route for boat traffic between Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Over the years these monumental lift bridges over the Gouwe have become part of the landscape and can be seen from far away. For me as a cyclist good for orientation.
