The Old Observatory of Leiden is the oldest surviving university observatory in the world. While students of Leiden University receive lectures in the main part of the building, the visitor center in the basement and the telescopes on the building serve the general public. It is not possible to enter the observatory by yourself, but we have tours Tuesday through Sunday. On this tour you will see some of the oldest and largest telescopes in the country! Check out our website for more information. See more..

    - Nice little observatory in a beautiful park

Visited with my 6 year old daughter who is a space-nerd! What a great time we had! The place is small, so in a way, you don't get overwhelmed by thousands of displays, and feel more comfortable taking time to go through everything at your own pace. At least that's how I feel. Sure it's dated, but I wasn't looking for state of the art there anyways. It's a nice side attraction to a large park around Dordrecht. They showed us a film (I'm guessing from the 80s) and that was fun in its own quirky way. Easy to watch and follow for a 6 year old. Then the greatest attraction is the 1920's telescope up in the observatory dome. We had a guided tour and the resident scientist showed us..... the sun! See more..
