  1. 4.5 Oostpoort (415 reviews)
    - A glimpse of the past
    Monuments & Statues
    Oostpoort image
If you’ve ever wanted to compare Vermeer’s View of Delft with the scene today, you’ll be largely disappointed. Much has changed since the 1660s. But, if you pass through the Oostpoort and cross the bridge, you’ll get a glimpse of the past. There’s the broad canal and, beyond it, the twin towers of a gateway with its arched entrance. Whilst Vermeer’s painting is from the south, and features a different gateway, the style of the Oostpoort is largely identical. When we visited, it was raining but, surveying the scene from beneath the dripping trees, it was worth the effort. See more..
  2. 4.5 The Destroyed City (250 reviews)
    - Desperation and helplessness!
    Monuments & Statues
    The Destroyed City image
A monument to the fallen in the bombing and devastation of Rotterdam during World War 2. A six metre high bronze statue of a human figure, weighing three tonnes. The sculptor of this art work, Ossip Zadkine described his design as 'a cry of horror for the human monster, who devised the executioner's work in order to let his brothers pay for a crime they did not commit'. This is a symbol of pain, horror, helplessness, desperation, man's inhumanity to man..... It speaks to all of us perhaps in different ways. You can't fail to see the horror and desperation, however! When it was unveiled, in the 1950s, it caused a bit of controversy, but it still stands there today, as a stark reminder about human history and the lessons people still have not learnt! This is a must see! See more..
  3. 4.0 Hugo de Groot Monument (128 reviews)
    - High up as a hero should be!
    Monuments & Statues
    Hugo de Groot Monument image
The most remarkable and impossible to miss monument in Delft. Placed on Markt in front of Nieuwe Kerk in 1886. Putting him high up, overlooking all of us, was comforting and put him to his right. Hugo Grotius might be one of the most distinguished law makers, arbitrator and the author of many international laws. The monument symbolizes the greatness of Dutch people throughout the history. His life and work made him in conflict with many peoples, among them the royal family. He was imprisoned because of his ideals that often sided with equality and diplomatic ways to solve religious and political conflicts that plagued the Dutch society during his time. He was exiled to Paris and was never allowed to come back to Holland and eventually died far away from his hometown in 1645. See more..

The visit was free to enter, and the staff were very friendly and informative. The stairs are incredibly steep but you have to go up, as it's so rewarding to see the views and the mechanisms in action. The wind when we were there was quite strong so the miller decided to curl up, and so lessen the area of, the sail covers. Excellent! See more..

    Historische Binnenstad image
The heydays of the city of Dordrecht were roughly between 1300 and 1650. From this period few buildings have survived, but the pattern of the historic city, more or less, has remained the same today. The main waterway Voorstraathaven and Wijnhaven -used to be the flow of the Thure river ending in the Merwede- is the heart of the city. Along its quays the historic center emerged and grew. Between Groothoofd and the Grote Kerk medieval structures were replaced with 18 and 19th century buildings in different styles (Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicist). Walk through Wijnstraat and Voorstraat, visit the area around Hof van Nederland and you will get a good impression of the old town. We did not do the boat tour, but probable it would add another angle to your perspective. See more..

  16. 4.0 Kindertransporten Hoek van Holland (1 review)
    - They survived
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Kindertransporten Hoek van Holland image
This is a statue representing Jewish children who were part of a group of 10,000 that were allowed to leave German controlled parts of Europe at the end of the 1930s. Children from Berlin, Vienna, Danzig (now Gdansk), Prague all crossed the Northsea by boat from the Hook of Holland to Britain. At the time part of an important railway link with London, now just a metrostation. The statue is designed by Frank Meisler who himself as a child, was part of the transport. There are similar monuments in Liverpool, London, Berlin and Gdansk. I was a bit struck by the location of the sculpture at a large lawn. The children almost look like lost and very much by themselves. Nobody around to support. It must have been a shocking experience. However, they all survived the war. Most of their relatives who stayed behind were brutally murdered by the Nazis. See more..
  17. 3.0 Obelisk Vrede Van Rijswijk (1792) (1 review)
    - Gedenknaald in mooi bos
    Monuments & Statues
Obelisk Vrede Van Rijswijk (1792) image
See more..
  18. 5.0 Molen (1 review)
    - Using the power of wind
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Molen image
This white windmill is called 'Zeezicht' (Seaview), though since it was built in 1718, the sea is less palpable due to the relatively new dam in the sea arm (Haringvliet) just some 6 km away. The mill was operational until 1966. For more than 200 years grain was milled here by using windpower. In the 1990s the mill was restored. If you see the sails turn, it means it is open for visitors. Interesting to see the simple, but ingenious mechanism to convert the power of wind into rotational energy. See more..
