Leiden the old university town

Leiden is a beautiful old city, situated between Den Haag and Amsterdam. It is also called museum city: it has 14 museums...to name a couple: National Museum of Antiquities - Naturalis - Boerhave - National Museum of Ethnology...it has one of the oldest universities in Europe..established by Willem van Oranje in 1575 when the town was freed from the Spanisch...it has an interesting history shown in museum "Lakenhal" One highlight is its collection of fijnschilder paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. Great city to visit in spring and summer!

    The unknown side of Leiden
If you fancy a walk along the unbeaten path, consider this asyour destination. The gate is still i use as one of the busiest cycle entrances to the city centre. Inside you'll find a nice (fish) restaurant which serves coffee on it's terrace in summer. Nearby you can find two old graveyards, the walk there is very pleasant. Furthermore the city's old harbor is just behind it, a nice place to wonder about life in Leiden about 200 years ago.

    Fantastic location, but expensive food.
This is one of the best locations in town particularly on a sunny day when you can sit outside on the terrace overlooking the water. It is more than plesant to watch the boats pass by. The food, however, was a little disappointing and definitely not value for money. So if you are more after an experience and not into good, reasonably-priced food, this is the place to go.
