    Hofvijver image
The Hofvijver is not really a pond but actually a lake fed by a water flow from the dunes of Kijkduin. It was created from a natural lake in 1248 by William the second when he built the first castle on the location. Now it is a mesmerizing backdrop to the centre of government, the Binnenhof, and the small tower which is the office of the prime minister. See more..

    - Walk the Leidse Loper (loop) and see how beautiful it is
    Bodies of Water
    Rijn (Rhine) image
There is no doubt Leiden on the Rhine (old and new) is a pretty town. Easily walkable as it is not very big. If you go to Visitor Centre next to Centraal Station you can pick up a map and follow a loop self guided walking trail that takes in the Rhine, some lovely windmills, Rembrandt's birthplace and the old wealthy district of Rapenburg. Well worth a few hours and the sign boards along the way have English and Dutch to explain what you are seeing. See more..

    Crezéepolder image
Crezee-polder-De Gorzen is an interesting wet-land area for bird-watchers and naturalists.I enjoyed seeing the various birdlife living between the reeds. The natural flow of the tides makes for fresh-water mudflats; the ideal feeding area for wading birds like avocets(kluten in dutch).De Gorzen is a more woody area were willows grow between reeds and local moisture loving plants. - Nice but badly signposted

    Quackjeswater image
The area is beautiful to walk in but we seemed to be going around in circles due to the lack of clear signposts. WHAT WE PLANNED AS A 12KM WALK BECAME 23KM, not a problem for us because we are used to walking but might be for people who are not. See more..
  10. 4.0 Oostvoornse Meer (2 reviews)
    - Deep artificial lake
    Bodies of Water
    Oostvoornse Meer image
A 2.5 km long artificial lake that came into being in 1966 during the creation of 'Maasvlakte' a new industrial port area reaching into the Northsea. The sand needed for the new peninsula left a big hole at some points 40m deep. Originally a fresh water lake emerged as a new dam was built on its westside. More recently salt water was let in. The result is brackish water allowing different species of fish to thrive, as well as a more varied flora and fauna on the lake shores. The lake is very much in use for training of divers. The area around is great for hiking and cycling, though very much exposed to wind. See more..

  12. 5.0 Vlist river (1 review)
    - Enchanting
Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Just 10 km in length, but one of the loveliest rivers in the Dutch polder landscape, flows between Schoonhoven and Haastrecht. In the past it served as a transport route to Utrecht. Nowadays the river is still a crucial waterway to drain superfluous water from the adjacent polders. The east bank of the Vlist is best for hiking or cycling as there is no car traffic allowed. Some farms sell their produce such as cheese or fruit along the way. It is possible to rent canoes in Schoonhoven and row to Haastrecht. In winter the river is great for ice skating. From Rotterdam to cycle along the Lek north bank to Schoonhoven, hence north along the Vlist and back west along the Hollandse IJssel north bank to Gouda and back south to Rotterdam is a pleasant loop during all seasons. It is about 75 km and one of my standard excursions. See more..

Once part of the river Meuse (Maas), since 1950 a lake, Brielse Meer is an attractive area for boating and watersports. The area is excellent for cycling and hiking around as well. Northwest to southeast at Zwartewaal the lake is some 12 km in length. Near Brielle there is a ferry, but only operational during daytime in the summer. See more..
