Deep artificial lake

A 2.5 km long artificial lake that came into being in 1966 during the creation of 'Maasvlakte' a new industrial port area reaching into the Northsea. The sand needed for the new peninsula left a big hole at some points 40m deep. Originally a fresh water lake emerged as a new dam was built on its westside. More recently salt water was let in. The result is brackish water allowing different species of fish to thrive, as well as a more varied flora and fauna on the lake shores. The lake is very much in use for training of divers. The area around is great for hiking and cycling, though very much exposed to wind.
