A small harbor with boats, a café-restaurant and a bike hire, a parking lot for cars just outside Strijensas at Hollands Diep. The village is just 30 km from Rotterdam, but a world apart. After passing an old lock (dd 1908) on the West side there is nature reserve Het Land van Essche. The whole area is like heaven for quiet and peace seekers. See more..

    - Most attractive part of the city

Plans in the early 1960s to fill up to harbour and build a parking garage here, were eventually abandoned. Early 1980s, it was decided to keep the connection between Linge and Merwede open for recreational purposes, be it that the new lock would be signicifantly smaller, than the original one. Now no longer suitable for cargo ships, but it meant that the historic value of the place could be preserved. For me, Gorinchem on both sides of the Linge river is the most attractive part of town. Once the vibrant heart of the city, many buildings still remind us of the time grain and wood were traded here. The produce of pottery and beer were other important activities. During my time of visit in August, the bridges were beautifully decorated with flowers. See more..
