THE LONGEST CHURCH OF THE NETHERLANDS The great fire of 1552 destroyed much of the medieval church of Saint John. Shortly after the disaster, the council commissioned the reconstruction of the most startling church of Holland. With 123 meters it is also the longest church in The Netherlands THE 72 STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS ARE WORLD-FAMOUS Entering the Church of St. John, one falls silent at the sight of the majestic space with the 72 world-famous stained-glass windows. That first experience will only get stronger when you see the marvellous light by the 'Dutch Masters' invading the Church. The rich history of Holland can be read in the large windows. It is a beginning of an impressive discovery along biblical and historical scenes of human emotions. Groothoofdspoort image
This is the only remaining citygate in Dordrecht... the foundations of this gate date back from the fourteenth century, but it's current state and look dates back from the 17th century. It is different from any other city gate that I have seen in the Netherlands, both in colour and with it's decorations... This really is a must see!. not only for the Gate itself, but also this point of town with a great view on the water and all the terraces/ restaurants/ cafes that are there. The Gate is currently part of a Hotel/ Restaurant, but you can still see it and go under it without having to go and eat there. Without having seen this city gate your day in Dordrecht would not have been complete!. See more..
  9. 4.0 Station Leiden Centraal (66 reviews)
    - Clean, easy to navigate, has plenty shops and snacks
    Architectural Buildings
    Station Leiden Centraal image
Pretty station, very small and easy to navigate, not confusing at all like some of Dutch stations tend to be. Also has a couple of clothing shops, Hema and Etos for cosmetics/medicine, two mini supermarkets, and also a couple of place where you can buy a snack. For instance, Smullers. They sell typical Dutch snacks in a sort of man-operated vending machine. Seems like a common thing in the Netherlands, I've seen it in a couple other places as well. The snacks are usually not great, but the idea is quite fun. Anyway, there is enough stuff to help you kill time before the train. See more..

The mill is still fully operational and runs regularly. It has been transformed into a museum. The living room on the groundfloor still looks as in 1900. From the landing on the first floot one can see how the large vertical axle transfers the motion of the wings to the scoopwheel. Raadhuis De Paauw in Wassenaar image
This used to be one of the nicest places in Wassenaar, especially for marriages. Finally they are starting renovating the building, it has been for years, at least 5 years, that this wonderful place has been in a deplorable state. The shame of Wassenaar! Although the former mayor Mr Hoekema promised to renovate (and finish) the building, nothing happened. Until last Monday! So hopefully I can change my review from poor into very nice indeed. 23. 4.0 De Vier Gekroonden (5 reviews)
    - Attractive old house

    De Vier Gekroonden image
Walking down Naaierstraat we admired this cute little house with its late gothic tracery and large, colourful frieze representing stone masons and bricklayers at work. There probably was a statue in the empty space between the panels, otherwise there would have been some tracery. Maybe a Madonna? The name of the house, ‘The Four Crowned Ones’ (‘De Vier gekroonden’ in Dutch) refers to four men who, according to Christian tradition, were killed on order of Roman emperor Diocletian because they refused to sculpt a pagan statue. They became the patron saints of stonemasons, stonecutters and bricklayers. It is not known for certain who crafted the frieze but historic data confirm both a bricklayer and a stonemason lived in the house. Architecture lovers may want to have a look at other interesting houses on Naaierstraat, dating mainly from the 17th and/or the 18th century (for instance at Numbers 2, 5, 12, 13-14, 15, 16, 21-22).
See more..

    Landgoed te Werve image
Due to my curiosity and mainly due to my colleague who initiated a lunch walk in nearby area, I was thrilled by today’s discovery. This is 13th century castle belonged to one of the counts of Holland. Old “te Werve” estate is been rebuilt, restored, changed its owners as well as facades and interieurs. However, some elements of the interiors are pretty authentic. Today this estate is been owned by the event’s company, running ceremonies and parties here. What still remains originally from the 15 th century is the Dovecote, the tower structure - home for pigeons or doves, an important food source centuries ago. While writing these I recalled the good old house of my grandparents with the dovecote as my grandpa used to breed doves. See more..

We come across this lovely castle while out cycling, We've came over from N Ireland to stay in Duinrell Wassenaar, hiring bicycles was the best money spent, since getting on the bikes on the road we set off trying our best not to crash and get about lol, any way we got our selves to this beautiful castle, all I wanted was to take a photo to sat I was there lol, there happened to be a beautiful wedding going on there so we made our way quietly to the garden away in front of the Castle so as not to invade their privacy. Poortwachtershuis Den Briel image
Renovated in the 1960s this former former (military) guardhouse now serves as an ordinary dwelling. So be discrete when observing the place. The original mid 18th century square functional structure is still well recognizable. The old watergate it used to guard has long been demolished. There are many similar structures in the Netherlands for instance in Maastricht and Geertruidenberg. The one in Jutphaas where once 137 soldiers could be accommodated was probably one of the largest. From the mid 1930s until now this Hefbrug (Lift bridge) has been working as it should with only very short intervals like in 2011 (disruption due to power failure) and in 2012 when a renovation took place and bikelanes were added on both sides. In Boskoop and Alphen are bridges of a similar design. They were constructed during a process of canalization of the Gouwe river, which is an essential route for boat traffic between Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Over the years these monumental lift bridges over the Gouwe have become part of the landscape and can be seen from far away. For me as a cyclist good for orientation. See more..

    Stadhuis van Schoonhoven image
Of the original 15th century structure little is left due to radical renovations in later ages. Still an outstanding late gothic style building that helps to maintain the historic features of the harbor area. A tourist information center (VVV) is at the ground floor. For some reason paintings representing Willem III (stadtholder king) and Maurits of Orange are present in the council chambers. Both have a notoriously anti-Republican reputation. Willem III instigated the lynching of Johan and Cornelius de Witt. Maurits set up the trial and execution of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. See more..

    Stichting Het Merula Weeshuis image
Perhaps this former orphanage building is most special, because of the story of Angelus Merula, the pastor of Heenvliet who was convicted to be burned by the Spanish Inquisition, because of heresy. Merula probably had seen it coming and wisely ensured his proporties (he was from a wealthy Den Briel family) could not be touched by the Catholic church. Instead orphans for centuries were taken care of, by using his inheritance. Merula died of a heart attack on his way to the pyre in Mons (Bergen) in 1557. Note the brick with depiction in the facade: girls left and boys right. The reformation continued the traditional segregation of the sexes. See more..

    Bovenschuur image
Thans in particilier bezit. See more..
