4 Star Places To Visit in Utrecht Province, The Netherlands (50)
4.5Canals area(2.333 reviews) - Lovely area with lots to do and great atmosphere Historic Walking Areas
The canals area is a must see when in Utrecht. The area has lots of photo opportunities and are busy with pleasure boats and paddle boarders. There a lots of pubs and restaurants to choose from along the banks from ordinary pubs to really high class restaurants and cocktail bars. Mr H and I loved the atmosphere although we did find it difficult to get a table on a Saturday night so would advise to book early if wanting to eat in any of restaurants in this area.See more..
4.5Dom Tower(2.003 reviews) - Don’t be put off by the scaffolding. Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Observation Decks & Towers • Religious Sites
When you visit Utrecht you will notice the Domtoren almost immediately. The 14th century tower is the heart of the old city centre. At 112 metres, it remains the highest church tower in the Netherlands. The Domtoren is open all year round, and the view of Utrecht is worth seeing in every season. The tower can only be visited as part of a guided tour, during which our expert guides will take you on a historical journey. The tour starts in the Tourist Information Centre on Dom Square and takes about an hour. The Domtoren is in need of extensive restoration work on the exterior and the restoration will take about 5 years (2019-2024) The Domtoren is open for visitors as normal. No work will be done on the inside of the tower so you can visit the chapels and belfry. When you come outside on the galleries at 70 meters and 95 meters you will see some scaffolding but the view is unchanged and as impressive as always. And you get the unique opportunity to see the work up close!See more..
4.5Railway Museum (Het Spoorwegmuseum)(1.376 reviews) - A fantastic exhibition of Dutch railway history Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
Just so many varied exhibits, trains and memorabilia from different generations. Intersting to see a train there that was only on service earlier in the year, that shows commitment to preservation of all generations of vehicles. There is also an interesting sideshow about Hyperloop as well, looking to the future. There is plenty of space to explore everything, some interactive stuff for the youngsters, and everything also really well explained on the info plaques for each exhibit. Also a reasonably priced cafe in there where snacks and coffee are available when you want a break from walking around! Was an easily spent 3 or more hours and I thought very good value for the entry fee, and would definitely recommend it to anyone with an interest in transport and railways.See more..
4.5Kasteel de Haar(1.110 reviews) - Beautiful fairy tale castle Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Speciality Museums
The largest castle in Netherlands. It is owned by a private family, but now it has been converted to a museum and you can visit inside as well. To visit inside the ticket is 18 euros and it includes the access to the castle park. If you are only going to visit the castle park then the ticket is 7 euros. Castle looks absolutely breathtaking from outside. The view from the garden is very nice. But consider going inside as well. You can feel the luxurious life the people has led. Everything inside is in perfect conditions and expect spend around 2 hours to complete the tour. There are lockers inside the castle to keep your belongings. You are not allowed to carry back lacks or any bags with you. If you carry a extensible camera stick, you have to keep it at the shortest length possible as it could damage the property inside and as the staff told us it could trigger a safety alarm as well if you extend at the wrong place. 4.5Amersfoort Zoo(1.034 reviews) - A brilliant zoo Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Zoos
A brilliant zoo with really well thought out experiences for visitors but also the animals. A lot of the animals have an alternative route through the enclosure which is great for the kids and usually with a slide at the end. Probably the best zoo we’ve ever been to in Europe.See more..
4.0Station Utrecht Centraal(903 reviews) - Big Station Spent < 1 hour Public Transportation Systems
Utrecht Centraal station is well served by NS trains to many diferent parts of the country including Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Maastricht, Den Haag, Rotterdam and more. There are staircases, lifts and escalators to take you from the platform to the concourse. On the concourse there are alot of different shops including Hema, Albert Heijn, Starbucks and more. Passing through the ticket barriers there are buses and trams to different parts of the city and also across the square is Hoog Katharijne which is a large shopping centre. One thing I liked was a small stand with books where you can swap your books for free. The station is easy to navigate and with light high ceilings has a nice atmosphere.See more..
4.5Museum Speelklok(868 reviews) - Hear magical music devices play Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums • Children's Museums
Museum Speelklok, the most cheerful museum in the Netherlands! During a visit to the typical Dutch Museum Speelklok, cheerful live music will surround you from centuries-old self-playing musical instruments. The history of these instruments started back in 16th century the Netherlands with the use of church carillons. Over the centuries, the general desire of people to be surrounded by music, led to the invention of all sorts of self-playing musical instruments: musical clocks, musical boxes, orchestrions (self-playing orchestras) and the traditional Dutch street organs. All of these instruments, including the famous street organ named Arabier and the so-called 8th world wonder the Violina, can be admired and heard during the lively museum tour. Thanks to the highly skilled Restoration Workshop, the collection is kept playing and this craft can be passed on from this generation to the next.See more..

4.0Nijntje Museum(417 reviews) - A good place to escape from busy city life Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
Miffy Museum is located opposite to the Central Museum where you can buy the entrance tickets to the Miffy Museum. I think miffy museum is for little kids or kidults or miffy fans. There is a big miffy soft toy sitting at the entrance lounge room of the 'miffy house' and it has turned a little grey and black, which I can tell how popular she is! I personally think it is a good place to escape from a busy, stressful city life. You will find your innocent childhood memory there and it doesn't cost much to enter. I think it is 4 euros (March-2017) on top of my head.See more..

4.5Rietveld Schroder House(393 reviews) - Amazing place - book in advance!! Wednesday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Architectural Buildings
What an incredible time capsule. The architecture of this home is inspiring, and it’s been kept extraordinarily well by the trust. You need to book well in advance as it’s very popular and tour groups are a limited size. This UNESCO site is a must see in Utrecht. Easy to walk to from Utrecht centre - about 40mins.See more..

4.0Museum Catharijneconvent(326 reviews) - Would recommend Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM History Museums
Museum is great for lovers of christian art. You will learn a lot through out the 3 floors. They offer free audio guides in english. Not all of the displayed art has signs in english. When we visited the rooms were really cold so I wouldn't recommend wearing just a tank top. The staff was very very nice.See more..

4.5Botanic Gardens(262 reviews) - A very complete botanical garden! Gardens
This is a must-see in Utrecht. A weel-design and pleasant garden with plenty to see! You just don't get bored in this place, since there is so many things to discover. Of course, different plants are the main issue, but the way the plants are exhibited is very interesting (either divided but types, or by uses, or by locations). You also have a marvellous butterfly greenhouse that is just amazing!See more..
4.5Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren(251 reviews) - Beautiful views but plan beforehand Points of Interest & Landmarks
i saw some reviews of people who wanted to climb the tower but found a closed door: be aware that you have to buy your tickets beforehand at the VVV (the Dutch tourist office). Only during summer months there are daily tours to the top of the tower:in July and August every day between 12.00 and 18.00. Outside the summer season there is only one daily tour starting at 14.00. So yes, you get the added benefit of being far from the maddening crowd of Amsterdam, but this goes with reduced opening hours. The views from the top are stunning, and you get to climb up much higher than most towers (to the final trans). When we got the tour, we were the only two people and the tour guide switched effortlessly to English (I'm Dutch but my partner isn't). The tour guide times the guide so that you are close to the carillion when it goes to play, so you can hear the bells from very close.See more..
4.5Kamperbinnenpoort(216 reviews) - Best cakes in Amersfoort. Wednesday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks

4.5SpaSereen Maarssen(203 reviews) - Fabulous nude experience. Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 11:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Spas
I had a fabulous time at SpaSereen. The sheer variety of saunas, spas and pools is amazing. The outdoor dining and lounge area is also very nice. It's important to note that this is a sauna in the Dutch style so you will need to be nude everywhere except the restaurant. And it is also mixed gender. That's absolutely fine. Within 10 minutes you'll forget it and stop noticing it. It's good to normalise nudity (and normalise the variety of body shapes that exist).See more..
No matter if you visit Utrecht in spring, summer or autumn - do not miss out on this wonderful, amazing flower market! Takes place each Saturday on Janskerkhof. This is so much more original and beautiful than the flowermarkets in Amsterdam. And what you buy here is good quality. That goes especially for the flower bulbs.See more..
The understanding of the role of the nature that showed the cubical forms to a little Piet and rooted the creativity ideas which later were reflected in his creation, comes to you when you take the paths which lead to the house of Mondrian’s birth. Cubical forms are everywhere in this little neighborhood of Amersfoort. This musea is an eye opener to several unknown details from the life of Piet Mondrian and his early works. It’s also the place to discovery the talented artists who’re exposing in this museum. The important aspect of this house-museum is that despite the non spacious size of it, it is wheelchair friendly! 4.5Amerongen Castle(164 reviews) - Beautiful building and the gardens Wednesday: Castles
Amerongen Castle is one of the great Dutch houses from the 17th century. The house, garden and furnishings form a unit seldom seen in the Netherlands. Amerongen Castle has a rich family-history, going back 700 years. The owners played an important part in the national and European history. Godard Adriaan van Reede (1621-1691) held a key-position in the insurrection against the French supremacy. As a retribution the house was burnt down by the French in 1673, but rebuilt by his wife Margaretha Turnor. The German Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941) lived at Amerongen Castle for 18 months and signed his abdication here in 1918. The desk at which this happened is still part of the Amerongen collection. The house, surrounded by historical gardens, is situated in the picturesque village of Amerongen at the foot of the Utrecht Hills. Amerongen Castle is vibrant with activities, such as (theme)tours, seasonal festivities, concerts, exhibitions and children’s activities.See more..

We visited the church on Saturday afternoon and attended a 'free' concert. Every Saturday there is a 'free' classical concert. This time we listened to music from Bach played beautifully on the impressive organ. Had an hour to look around while enjoying the special music. Note that during that time it is not really appropriate to walk around or leave the church. Pretty serious audience. At the end there is an offering for the organisation who organises the concerts. Suggested donation is 10 Euro a person. You can leave cash or use their pin machine. A great restful place in this beautiful city.See more..
In 1804, an army camp was established near Zeist, led by the French general de Marmont. The camp included three army units, two of which were French and one Batavian. The Marmont, who had been campaigning with Napoleon in Egypt in 1798, wanted to have an eternal memory point for himself and had the soldiers build a pyramid from loam. This was based on the pyramid of Giza. The pyramid was ready on October 4, 1804. Eventually she was renamed the 'pyramid of Austerlitz', partly because the troops from the camp had fought in this battle. The pyramid of Austerlitz is not far from the village of Austerlitz, near to the N224.See more..

Partner and I biked here while staying in Utrecht. Very easy getting here and was a great way to spend an afternoon. It was quiet when we went so we could tour at our own pace. There was a lovely lady on the 2nd floor who showed us around and explained the history of the families who lived there. There was a Mozart performance taking place that evening and we got to hear some rehearsals which was neat too! After the tour we stopped at their cafe for a nice apple tart and coffee. Was the highlight of our day for sure!See more..

4.5Sint Willibrordkerk(87 reviews) - A beautiful, beautiful catholic church in a protestant Utrecht.. Points of Interest & Landmarks
You wouldn't expect a catholic church to be built in such a grand style in Utrecht, in the Netherlands. This after all - is majority protestant in the lands "above the river", and yet, here we are.. I lived in the neighbourhood of Utrecht for years, and never knew. It was - as are all catholic churches - "well hidden in plain view". Such churches were also called "Schuilkerken" - or hidden churches. They were designed to look like villas on the outside, but were churches on the inside.. So too this church. It's been recently purchased by a French order, and mass is celebrated in the traditional latin. So if you'd like to see mass as it used to be celebrated in the 14th century, head down here. its quite an experienceSee more..
