Don’t be put off by the scaffolding.

When you visit Utrecht you will notice the Domtoren almost immediately. The 14th century tower is the heart of the old city centre. At 112 metres, it remains the highest church tower in the Netherlands. The Domtoren is open all year round, and the view of Utrecht is worth seeing in every season. The tower can only be visited as part of a guided tour, during which our expert guides will take you on a historical journey. The tour starts in the Tourist Information Centre on Dom Square and takes about an hour. The Domtoren is in need of extensive restoration work on the exterior and the restoration will take about 5 years (2019-2024) The Domtoren is open for visitors as normal. No work will be done on the inside of the tower so you can visit the chapels and belfry. When you come outside on the galleries at 70 meters and 95 meters you will see some scaffolding but the view is unchanged and as impressive as always. And you get the unique opportunity to see the work up close!

500 steps, are you fit to climb.
We saw photos of the Dom, but unfortunately we visited when it was shrouded in scaffolding. You could take a lift to the top, but in order to see and understand the history of the building you have to do a guided tour. You do have a break from climbing on each level, I think 4. You visit the 14 bells, the top floor you can walk around and get 360 degree views. The spiral stone steps get narrower on the way to the top. It is well worth the climb and is beautiful. Lockers are supplied in the Tourist Information Centre where you can buy tickets. Also deserved an ice cream after the descent. Restoration going on until 2024, I think.

Despite scaffolding on exterior still an excellent site and tour
Firstly be warned the tower is under renovation and the outside is completely clad in scaffolding however the tour itself inside and climbing the steps is still worth doing. The history of the building is fascinating and seeing the bells, the old living quarters and even climbing the steps is amazing! Our guide was informative and ready to answer any questions, the tour was conducted in Dutch and English. Because of the scaffolding it was very dark inside and getting a photo was difficult but Mr H and I really enjoyed it. The steps are steep so not something for very young children and even some ‘fit’ people on our tour struggled with the amount of steps!
