In 1804, an army camp was established near Zeist, led by the French general de Marmont. The camp included three army units, two of which were French and one Batavian. The Marmont, who had been campaigning with Napoleon in Egypt in 1798, wanted to have an eternal memory point for himself and had the soldiers build a pyramid from loam. This was based on the pyramid of Giza. The pyramid was ready on October 4, 1804. Eventually she was renamed the 'pyramid of Austerlitz', partly because the troops from the camp had fought in this battle.
