    Anne Frank Standbeeld image
This we'll known statue of Anne Frank was a gift of the children of Utrecht. They collected old paper and iron to pay for the statue. It was a gift on April 30th 1959, the day former Queen Julia celebrated her birthday. Utrecht artist Pieter d'Hont is the artist. I like the self assured posture of Anne Frank here. For me she represents here "strenght" &"hope". Her diary being translated in more then 70 languages, being present in the centre of Utrecht (near the flower market) is a symbol of just that. Head up and giving the people something to remember; you go girl! See more..

    Houtzaagmolen De Ster image
The old mill yard of the ‘Molen de Ster’ sawmill forms a unique industrial heritage site, dating back to the eighteenth century. After several renovations, the site is currently used in a versatile manner – reflecting both its historical roots and the lively neighbourhood of Lombok, in which it is situated in Utrecht. Molen de Ster is only an 6 minute walk from Utrecht Central Station (Jaarbeursplein exit) and close to Utrecht’s medieval city centre. Our cafe is open from Wednesdays till Sundays, on Saturdays we are open for free guided tours, and we regularly organise or host events in our saw barn or on the mill yard. Have a look at our diary to see when our next events are taking place. Furthermore, the mill can be hired for private or business-related occasions. See more..

See more..

    Harmelen Train Disaster Monument image

    - Dutch Landscape

    De Veenmolen image
The "Veenmolen" is a grain mill located on the edge of a village called Wilnis. Large parts of this landscape have undergone a double metamorphosis in recent centuries: from land to water (by peatification) and back to land (reclamation). The mill is open every Saturday between 10:00 - 16:00 unless otherwise stated on this website. We also participate annually in the National Mills Day and Heritage Days. Once, there were over 10.000 windmills in Holland. Different types of windmills existed, with various purposes: milling grain, pumping water out of polders, pressing oil, sawing wood, grinding spice, et cetera. The Dutch made themselves a name worldwide with windmills. As a result of industrialisation, the windmills passed out of use and became idle. Many fell into decay and disappeared altogether. Now there are only about 1000 windmills left, which are kept for their cultural and historical value. See more..

    Beerschoten-Willinkshof image
It was love at the first sight. I always try to stop for a moment when we pass this place. It's located on the opposite of the station Driebergen-Zeist. Beerschoten-Willinkshof is a landscaped park at Hoofdstraat 21. The neoclassical garden temple ( folly ) stands on a slight elevation and offers a view of the overtuin with a winding pond at the botom. The design of the folly was inspired by the "Temple de l'Amour" at Marie Antoinette's Trianon Palace in Versailles. It is cute and so romantic..... See more..

On each side of those upright placed reliefs are made with the important moments in Schaepman's life. A monument to honour those who fell as a result of Nazi war violence in the period 1940 - 1945 and thereafter during the bloody colonial war in Indonesia. Two men are depicted: one is lying, while the other is standing with a torch (handed over by the fallen man). The monument was erected in 1951, a time when the Dutch ruling class successfully incorporated the soldiers, who died during their war against the Indonesian people, into the national commemoration celebrations.
