The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum was a dream of Iowa 80 Truckstop founder Bill Moon. His love for trucks and the trucking industry laid the foundation for this museum. Over 100 vintage trucks are on display, as well as antique signs and gas pumps. The museum also features the REO Theatre where visitors can enjoy watching films about trucks and trucking.See more..
Madison County is the Covered Bridge Capital of Iowa, with the largest group of covered bridges that exists in one area in the western half of the Mississippi Valley. Six of the original nineteen covered bridges remain, five of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Roseman Covered Bridge and Holliwell Covered Bridge were both featured in the film "The Bridges of Madison County", and the Cedar Covered Bridge was featured on the cover of the novel "The Bridges of Madison County". The Madison County Chamber of Commerce specializes in guided personal and group tours of the covered bridges and other historic sites around Madison County.See more..

Upon visiting the Amana Colonies I saw a van tour. Alot of the sights were closed to the general public but could be accessed with the van tour. The tour was $20 and was an 2.5 hours long. The tour guide was a life long resident as well as her family. It was so informative and interesting. I would have never learned as much about the colonies from just walking around. The ladies at the visitor center seemed to really like talking with the public and sharing this piece of history. See more..
4.0Western Historic Trails Center(43 reviews) - A worthwhile visit! Friday: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM Visitor Centers • History Museums
This center tells the story of the Mormon pioneers who moved west during the 1800's. It sits right next to the beautiful temple and there are many grave markers on these grounds of people who died there. There is a short movie that brings to life some of the sacrifices and trials that these people endured. The displays depict the homes they lived in, and the circumstances of their situation. Some of the stories are heartbreaking, and many are inspiring. This was a very worthwhile visit!See more..

4.5RiverCenter(31 reviews) - Excellent visitor center in an old train station. Spent 1-2 hours Visitor Centers
I stopped in for some local information on a beautiful, sunny Saturday and was amused to see the Segway tour starting out. Tour members seemed able to handle the Segways. I heard the leader giving safety instructions for what I assumed would be a ride on the bike trail along the Mississippi. It looked like it would be fun. The visitors center rented a tandem bicycle to a couple and provided the info I needed. At the foot of Harrison Street at River Drive and catty corner to the big, glass Figge Art Museum, there is free parking in the front lot.See more..
We had a rainy day on our mini-vacation and decided to stop here with 3 kiddos, 5,6 and 7. The guides were wonderful and each child got to hold one of the turtles. We all enjoyed learning about the rattlesnakes as well. Definitely worth a stop, rainy day or not.See more..

5.0Gateway to Northeast Iowa Welcome Center(3 reviews) - Its a Welcome Center, Its an Art Shop, Its a massive Tornado Shelter, Its Wonderful Spent < 1 hour Visitor Centers Talk about hidden jewels; randomly stopped here once and ended up stopping there every time we've passed by since, whether we needed to or not. The gift shop has lots of reasonably priced local Art for sale and the kids just love this gift shop. The restrooms are pleasant and relaxing. The welcome center attendants are fine representatives of the area. And finally, this place seems to have the largest and sturdiest tornado shelter in Iowa.See more..

The Waterloo Visitors Bureau is a good place to start your exploration of Waterloo. The Grout Museum district is nearby. However, my interest was a walking tour. Therefore, I inquired about a self-guided walking tour. It seemed that this is not a popular activity these days. A brochure was not readily available. However, the friendly lady of the Visitor Center retrieved an old walking tour description from her files, made a copy for me and she pointed out to me the most interesting sites. I was not disappointed. There are several interesting buildings and areas along the route, in particular the Public Library (with two murals by a student of Grant Wood), the historic YMCA, the bridges across and the views of the Cedar River, and E 4th Street (historic business district) with many bars, restaurants and some shops. Overall a very nice walk.See more..
