Stunning man-made grottoes representing scenes of the life of Christ. Father Dobberstein’s years of work using minerals, gemstones, petrified wood and other elements make this Shrine an extraordinary example of his devotion to Christ and the Virgin Mary. Admission to the Shrine and adjacent Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church is free but donations are accepted. We stayed overnight in the RV Campground - 30A service for $20/night or $10/Passport America discount. See more..
  2. 4.0 Crystal Lake Cave (201 reviews)
    - Fun and interesting!!
    Friday: Caverns & Caves
    Crystal Lake Cave image
Crystal Lake Cave has active stalactites and stalagmites which are approximately 80% active or still growing-this is very rare for a cave. It is fascinating and beautiful!! The Owner and tour guide, Julie, is engaging and you can feel her love of the caves. It is a perfect place for adults and children of all ages, and it can be done as a day trip from the Quad Cities or Chicago suburbs. I highly recommend!! See more..

    - So good already booked for next year!
    Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Caverns & Caves

First timer this year and l was totally impressed with the staff, amenities, and fishing here. Our trailer was backed right up to the trout stream, and being an avid fly fisherman it didn't take much to land a dozen nice brown trout within 20' of my trailer. The fishing pond did not require a license and we caught many bass, bluegill, and bream! I am also a bird photographer and I didn't have to leave my campchair to get many photos. Yes, the train comes thru and blows the whistle at night but I didn't feel that it hindered our stay here. Matter of fact we already booked for almost two weeks next year before we left! See more..
  4. 3.5 Ice Cave (80 reviews)
    - Can't Go Far in the Cave

    Ice Cave image
Decorah Ice Cave is a state preserve but managed by the town of Decorah. We stopped by after visiting Dunning's Spring Park and waterfall. Ice Cave Road is closed past Dunning's Spring, so we walked about a half-mile up the road to the cave. Due to collapses, it's only possible to go about 10 feet into the cave and we didn't see any ice. However, it was really chilly in the cave on a warm summer day. I spoke with a couple locals who said you could go a lot further into the cave until about 10 years ago when some rocks collapsed and limited entry. But it's still worth a side trip if visiting Dunning's Spring. See more..
