We were to have a guide but he didn't show up. However, that was no problem as the sights were well described by markers along the way. Also, there was no problem about finding your path. The shot tower was a unique building for us and we also found the brewery and convention center to be very attractive. We were impressed by how all the benches and lookouts were donated. See more..
  2. 4.5 Wildcat Den State Park (22 reviews)
    - "A Great Place To Visit Anytime Of The Year"
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
    Wildcat Den State Park image
Wildcat Den has always been a favorite place of mine. Unlike our neighboring state of Illinois, the state parks in Iowa remain open during this unusual time of the COVID-19 Virus. When I visited Wildcat Den there were numerous families there enjoying the crisp, sunny day. I even encountered two men from a neighboring city in Illinois running their remote controlled trucks in a stream bed.Granted, everyone was observing "social distancing". Wildcat Den is known for the rock features such as the Punch Bowl and Steamboat Rock and you'll get a good workout as the trails wind up and down the terrain. As with many state parks, the trails lack maintenance because there is never enough staff to make needed repairs. As a result you'll be going around staircases that have been damaged due to erosion. At this time when other states are closing parks, I can't find much fault with that. It was just great to enjoy this natural wonder! See more..

My dog & I took a scenic ride through the Okoboji area on a perfect, spring Saturday. A ride is nice, but a dog needs to sniff and my legs needed stretching. So we looked for a piece of bike trail we had never walked before. We hiked past a frog pond, some art sculptures and headed into a grassy field with a small lake. A pair of Purple Martins had claimed one of many birdhouses. We explored the park and climbed the observation tower to watch a pair swans: How neat! Later three muskrats raced by in what looked like a game of water tag. I plan to return! See more..
  6. 5.0 Starr's Cave Park and Preserve (1 review)
    - Love it!
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
We love going to Starr's Cave. The scenery is breath taking and it's cool to look for the bats in the cave, we don't always see them but fun to look anyway. We love walking the trails and have done so during every season, one more beautiful than the next. They do a bunch of activities out here, keeps it fun and interesting to learn new things. We take our grandkids out every time they visit, we nicknamed it the "Bat Cave" since we always look for the bats :) See more..

    - Special site of remembrance
Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues • Scenic Walking Areas
I remember the gripping 1989 video footage of surviving passengers from United 232 walking dazed and confused in the cornfields by the airport runway where they had crashed. The Memorial is on Larsen Park Road by the Missouri River in town, and with flowers and plants, a beautiful sculpture and large arched trellis, remembers with honor the victims, survivors and rescue workers who experienced the tragic 1989 crash. It is worth visiting when in town. Allow 10-15 minutes. See more..
