    This monument is a few miles from downtown, along the Missouri River. It honors the memory of Sergeant Floyd, the only Lewis and Clark expedition member to lose his life on the journey, due to illness. He was a well respected military man and his story is well told in placards at the historic monument. It’s located on a hill and views from the site are beautiful. Well worth a stop when visiting Sioux City. See more..

    A short drive to view the scenic overlook. You can enjoy a view to the west as far your eye can see! Closer in you see the beautiful Loess hills, a small lake that you pass on way to the overlook. In addition, you can see the Missouri river! (The lake is also a picnic area.) The fall foliage was beautiful, but we have enjoyed in other seasons. There are trails to enjoy as well. A nice getaway. :) See more..

    The river views alone are worth the stop. You can park and stroll the sidewalk to the lookout and monument. Historical plaques are displayed for your information about Dubuque and the Mines of Spain. Julien Dubuque’s remains are inside the monument tower. You cannot go inside the monument. It is locked and hollow inside. There is a nice lookout of the Mississippi River here with expansive views to the north, east, and south. I recommend a stop here. See more..

    This is a monument to a Yankton Chief. The Yanktons were of the Sioux nation but were not warlike. War Eagle, even tough his name indicates otherwise, was a peace maker and a big help to the white man. If you are a history buff, don't pass this one up. Geographically, it is very interesting to see The Big Sioux and the Missouri Rivers join. Notice the flat land to the North and West which now is South Dakota. That was flattened by a glacier many many years ago. This point is where the glacier stopped. See more..

    Right in downtown Pella, the clock plays every 30 minutes. Walking through the walkway from the street was a great surprise! Pretty walk with seating, Dutch murals on both sides, and beautiful tulips. It's right near the windmill downtown, worth a stop. The little bakery-type shop next door had long lines for the Dutch pastries, so it must have great treats! We couldn't wait. Worth a stop. The bells on top were very neat. I wish the windows were a little easier to see through. Maybe they're using tinted glass, but we could still see them fine. See more..

    This memorial was just redone in May 2021 and it is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Seriously, it is one of the BEST memorials we have seen in all our travels across America. All the wars are represented on pillars - listing the number of people who served and those who were KIA and POW - will definitely make you pause and reflect on the sacrifices of those men and women. There are personalized pavers and benches already out and more available. The Vietnam Memorial was relocated from Miller Riverview Park and looks better than ever. There is a special garden area that is in the shape of the USS Oklahoma, where Chaplain Schmitt perished on 12/07/1941 - the island where this memorial is located is named after him. The pier with the silver statue is stunning and has a poem engraved inside. Everything lights up at night, so make sure to visit during both times of day. This is sure to be a favorite Dubuque stop for tourists and locals alike! See more..

    I've been through this town 2x on Ragbrai in 2013 and 2012 and the cute little fountain is a highlight of this small Danish community. There are other attractions in the area, but not sure if the art museum or country store are open when Ragbrai isn't coming through. Good place to stop with the kids and let them run around and stretch their legs on the playground equipment behind the fountain. See more..

    I specifically drove here to see Iowa's largest frying pan, billed by some as the world's largest frying pan (I doubt it). It was both fun and worth it.     The Swedish Immigrant Monument is a very nice bronze (I assume) statue but there is nothing else to see at this site. Located off the path of Hwy 34, there are signs directing you where to turn but there is nothing at the immediate site.... just look for the small church on the North side of the road (87th Street) and turn left. The statue does have a nice plaque to read which gives a little history of the first Swedish settlers to the area and how they got there. See more..

    On our two month road trip we drove through Iowa to see family in Pella and we stopped at all the Freedom Rocks that were close to where we were traveling. The first one was in Leon. The rocks are painted by Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II and are simply amazing! Each one we’ve seen thus far is dedicated to someone that is meaningful to the area. The park is located behind the attractive City Hall building located on Main Street. Be sure to visit the huge "Welcome Home Soldier" Veterans Memorial a few miles to the east near Albia, Iowa.     I remember the gripping 1989 video footage of surviving passengers from United 232 walking dazed and confused in the cornfields by the airport runway where they had crashed. The Memorial is on Larsen Park Road by the Missouri River in town, and with flowers and plants, a beautiful sculpture and large arched trellis, remembers with honor the victims, survivors and rescue workers who experienced the tragic 1989 crash.
