On Camp Dodge, the museum is a military one. It's small, but informative and I plan on going back again this summer to see how things are progressing. It will be well worth another trip. See more..
  2. 4.5 Monona County Veteran's Memorial Museum (9 reviews)
    - Excellent Small Town Veterans Museum with Freedom Rock

Monona County Veteran's Memorial Museum image
This is one of the best done Veteran's Museums I have been to. The curator is a volunteer and when open it is staffed by volunteers, the majority of which are all veterans. The local American Legion also meets in this building. The Freedom Rock was just finished last year, is lighted, and has a roof over it for protection. Onawa definitely cares about their Veterans and they are all proud of the service. The unique aspect is the volunteers that are more than willing to not only give you a personal tour, but tell you first hand stories of their deployments. See more..

  4. 5.0 Museum Maxwell (1 review)
    - 12,000 Items & All Clean & Organized
Friday: Spent 1-2 hours Military Museums • Speciality Museums • History Museums
    Museum Maxwell image
Every little town has its local museum and Museum Maxwell I one of those BUT-HERE IS THE BIG DIFFERENCE--the Maxwell Museum has over 12,000 items but each and every displayed is neither dusty or musty but well organized on three different floors plus the basement and all clean. The curators told me they close during the winter months and clean top to bottom a different display. Their hours are limited to Sundays and Holidays(Memorial Day thu Labor Day) BUT they will show you their collection by appointment. IT IS WORTH THE BOTHER to travel to Maxwell, Iowa (45 minute drive northeast of Des Moines) and to book an appointment. See more..
  5. 5.0 Civilian Conservation Corps/Prisoner of War Recreation Hall & Museum (1 review)
    - Interesting site showcasing local history
Friday: Spent 1-2 hours Military Museums • Speciality Museums • History Museums
Definitely worth stopping by if you are traveling through Eldora, or staying at Pine Lake State Park. This museum displays artifacts, photos and personal accounts of the Civilian Conservation Corps and Prisoner of War camps that were housed in this building. Also has a lot of history of nearby Pine Lake State Park, which is where the CCC spent most of their time working. The building has been restored to its original condition and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Even has an old pool table you can use (since the building was the recreation hall of the camps). See more..
