    We went to Charles City Iowa to see the famous waterway on the Cedar River. Heavy rains have swollen many Iowa rivers and we had hoped to kayak above the rapids and have a leisurely paddle. Dark clouds loomed and rain took the paddle out of our day. But we really enjoyed the river walk and the down town area. We were there on July 4th and many people had placed blankets and chairs along the riverbanks in hopes of a great viewing spot for what we heard was super fireworks. Again - the rain came in hard - and we left before dark, so not sure how the fireworks turned out. I know there were many soaked blankets and chairs. We were always from our parked car so ducked into The Pub to wait out the storm. The Pub was super nice and food was great. No one rushed us, although they were pretty busy. Charles City would be a great getaway. In fact we are looking at property there. See more..

    Cedar Rapids Tank Tours runs a really fun, well organised float down the Cedar River in an agricultural water / feed tank. These are massive, circular plastic tanks that look a lot like an overgrown kiddie pool and have a table, umbrella and bench chairs fixed in them. We got collected in a bus from the Solon Nature and Rec area, halfway between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids and were helped into our tank. We had an awesome afternoon, floating down the river and getting out on sandbars to swim and explore. You can also rent float tubes and be towed along behind the tank. Rick and the team were very friendly & helpful & were around and about in a safety boat to make sure everyone was OK. The float ends at Sutliff Bridge and you get taken back to your car in the bus. It's a really relaxing, super fun way to spend a summer day in Iowa. Definitely recommend it. See more..
