Aunt Hattie’s Fanciful Emporium was founded in 2009 in the heart of the historic downtown area of Le Claire, Iowa. Donna Walley, the owner, wanted to create a place where women could bring their friends to shop, laugh and find unique items most other stores don’t carry. She also convinced her husband, Wayne, to part with some of his extensive collection of vintage beer signs and barware, so that “guys would have something to look at in the store.” The combination of humorous magnets and greeting cards, reproduction tin signs, pop culture items, vintage collectibles, newer collector items, retro candy and toys, the “naughty box” for adults, “gum with attitude” and “guy stuff” struck a nerve with shoppers as Aunt Hattie’s Fanciful Emporium was voted the “Best Gift Shop” in the Quad Cities in the Quad City Times Reader’s Poll in 2012 and 2013.See more..

5.0Paper Moon(38 reviews) - Five star stopover Friday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality & Gift Shops
Cited as a must see in the New York Times travel section, Paper Moon is a one of a kind store located in McGregor, Iowa-just a block from the Mississippi River! Ken, Louise, and Jennifer opened the Paper Moon in 1994. The historic 1860’s building proudly went solar in 2009. The Paper Moon has been described as “the ultimate in therapy shopping.” The ground floor hosts a unique array of gifts, including jewelry, greeting cards, toiletries, housewares, and tons of fun stuff! The second level balcony holds an array of new books and handmade housewares; the third level is 1,000 square feet of children’s books and toys in a relaxing atmosphere. Inventory is in constant flux and Louise and Jennifer work hard to make sure the store has something for everyone. Customer service is important to staff at Paper Moon. They can help with personalized shopping, free gift wrapping, gift certificates, and free delivery in Prairie du Chien, McGregor, and Marquette. Stop by and visit!See more..

4.5Downtown McGregor(36 reviews) - A Galena, IL alternative Speciality & Gift Shops
If you like the quaint upper-midwest river town atmosphere then this might be the spot for you. Most of the circa late 1800's buildings have been rehabbed, probably to better-than-new condition, and are now occupied by modern, tourist-oriented shops and restaurants. I was there on a pleasant mid-August Thursday and found a few visitors, family groups and seniors, walking around. Street and lot parking was plentiful, convenient and free. I have no idea about crowding at peak times but I suspect that the more remote location compared to Galena, IL may moderate it. This can be bad for business and people-watching but great for convenience and comfort.See more..
5.0Stringtown Grocery(31 reviews) - A Refreshing Experience... Friday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Speciality & Gift Shops
Any visit to my inlaws absolutely requires a Stringtown sojourn. It honestly is one of the most unique stores in the country, in my opinion. While the gentle Amish eschew many modern amenities, they are still extremely astute business folks, and their simple grocery store that caters to their needs draws in far more of 'The English.' I shopped here in the 90s, while stationed at U of Iowa, and their wonderful products and great value has not changed one bit. The only thing that has changed is a newer/larger, building, resplendent with awesome natural lighting and propane-powered refrigeration for their meats/produce and inside climate control. In this nut job of a world we live in, it is so comforting to experience Amish country, and relish thoughts of a simpler life. God Bless them...See more..
5.0Prairie Lights(30 reviews) - Prarie Lights is exceptional. Friday: 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops
I've gone to Prarie Lights several time and they are really exceptional. Their employees are helpful and VERY knowledgable, their book selection is impressive considering their size, and the readings they hold in the store are very well put on. They also have a small cafe that is very pleasent. Their children's book selection is also worth mentioning, and it includes childrens books in several languages. They also carry a small selection of International newspapers (I got a copy of Le Monde there). Additionally, it is a small, private, local business that keeps your money in Iowa City.See more..

5.0Drew's Chocolates(19 reviews) - Great chocolate and the freshest nuts I have ever had. Spent < 1 hour Speciality & Gift Shops
We bought a small assortment and we went to a little park in town and sampled them. They were all unbelievable! We went back and bought peanut clusters, almond clumps, pecan clumps and covered Brazil nuts. Many chocolate shops have superb chocolate and this place is among the very best. However, the freshness of the nuts was what set this store apart. I believe these were the very best chocolate/nut combinations I have ever tasted. The prices are not cheap by rural standards but is half of what I have paid in Philly or San Francisco and every bit as good! This is definitely worth pulling off the interstate.See more..

5.0Agora(15 reviews) - Artsy gem in downtown Decorah Friday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops Agora features works in all media by a variety of artists. It is fun to just go and look at the unique items they display, which they do beautifully. The store is technically in the Winnishiek Hotel, a lovely historic hotel, but you enter the store from Water Street, not the hotel lobby. The staff is really nice as well. When I admired a painting on the wall which was out of my price range, the attendant showed me two alternative presentations of the same work. One was a reasonably priced poster, and one was a note card, which she suggested putting in a floating glass frame since it was not a standard size for matting. Given the quality of merchandize, it would be easy for the staff to be pretentious, but like the rest of this town, they are warm and welcoming. This store is truly a gem. Anyone with an interest in the arts would enjoy a visit here.See more..

4.5Stoner Drug(14 reviews) - Adorable Relic. Speciality & Gift Shops
Visited Stoner Drug last weekend as we passed through town on a family trip. It is clearly the most popular place to visit in town. There was a lot of foot traffic and customers getting Cokes and chocolate malts at the soda fountain. We even had lunch here—a couple of hamburgers, malts, and toasted cheese sandwiches!! Anything you need, you can get here. It is kind of like going back in time. All of the employees were very kind and I even got to catch up with some of the town’s inhabitants. I left with a pretty rad tie-dyed Stoner Drug tee. If you go through town, this shop is definitely a must see.See more..
