    - Wooden fairy tale
Sunday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
    Museum of Wooden Architecture image
On the place of the former monastery of St Demetrius one can find another marvel of traditional Russian architecture – an open-air Museum of Wooden Architecture. Several churches, houses, and other authentic 18th and 19th-century wooden buildings were brought here from all over the Vladimir region in the 1960–1970s. The man-made beauty of the monuments of folk architecture merged wonderfully with the landscape of centuries-old Suzdal. The Church of the Transfiguration (1756) seems to be a town cut in wood, with its parts of different sizes and shapes ingeniously connected by the carpenters who built the entire church without metal nails. The recently reconstructed Church of the Resurrection (1776) belongs to the type of “boat-shaped” churches, when all parts of the building stretch along one axis. The ship (bark, or boat) is an ancient Christian symbol comparing the Church to the Noah’s Ark. The object is under the operational management of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. See more..

  7. 5.0 State Museum Preserve Rostov Kremlin (1.072 reviews)
    - Allow enough time for this Church and Museum Complex
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Speciality Museums
State Museum Preserve Rostov Kremlin image
The Rostov Kremlin is similar to other Kremlins in Russia, comprising a walled complex of old historic churches with preserved frescoes, and museums. We had a guide to explain all the entry options and elected to go with the all-inclusive tickets. The guide also explained which entry we should use to get onto the wall and where we should come down (which would have been quite confusing otherwise). We arrived mid-afternoon but were still struggling to get through all of the small museums and chapels. The museums could perhaps be omitted if you have seen other icon collections and religious art, but you basically have to follow a path around the wall of the complex. The staff were keeping the various rooms open for us as we rushed through just on closing time, which was nice. See more..
  8. 4.5 Museum-estate of Leo Tolstoy (1.062 reviews)
    - A must for Tolstoy fans but don't forget his Moscow house
Sunday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
    Museum-estate of Leo Tolstoy image
Clearly anybody who is interested in Tolstoy should make the trek out here. It's also simply a beautiful part of the world so even if you are not a massive fan it is interesting simply as the pleasant estate of a Russian aristocrat. As people said you can only visit the interiors as part of a group, but even if you don't speak Russian just join a group - there's enough to look at as you go through each room. Make sure to visit his grave in the forest though beware it is further into the woods than you may think - around 10-15 minutes at a decent pace. Some of the groups have too many people however which restricts the pleasure you get of going around the rooms. Also very little info for non-Russian speakers hence give 4/5. One thing worth noting however is that you should not miss Tolstoy's Moscow residence which is also a museum with mostly/all? original artifacts. Yasnaya Polyana was preserved as it was when Tolstoy died, by which stage he was living a very frugal life. The Moscow home feels far less austere and probably gives a better picture of his family life that made up the larger portion of his time than the final years. Plus you can wander freely without a tour and there are English description boards for every room. See more..

The imposing architectural ensemble of the Monastery of the Saviour and St Euthymius “stands out vividly like a city” on a high steep bank of the Kamenka river. - Food for thought at any occasion

Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center image
All museums are similar to some extent. Often it is a collection of items united by one theme, lying on display behind the glass. You cannot say the same about our museum. It is different. It is interactive. It is difficult to say what it resembles most, a museum in its conventional meaning or a theme park. The exposition imparts the information in a multitude of ways. It is multifaceted. It engulfs you, enters your mind and interacts with almost every single of your sense organs. And it is possible thanks to the cutting-edge audio-visual and computer technologies. See more..

The Kolomna Pastila Museum (‘History with Taste’) is a unique museum that presents a rather ephemeral and elusive part of our intangible heritage: tastes, aromas, the culture of everyday life, a way of speaking… The subject of this museum is the lost-but-rediscovered taste of the apple sweetmeat Kolomna Pastila, which is known and loved across the whole of Russia. Here we’ll treat you to this old Russian delicacy and tell you about some of the local legends, traditions and habits bound up with it. You’ll hear real stories from the lives of admirers of Kolomna pastila – from simple folk to tsars and tsarinas and Russian men of genius. Come and sample a taste of history! See more..

    Vodonapornaya Bashnya image
It is a monument of industrial architecture of the early 20th century. The necessity to build a water tower appeared in the 1860s when the Vladimir running water system was constructed. According to the first project the water tower was to be placed inside the former church above the Golden Gate. This project was fortunately not realized. Later a wooden water tower was built on the Kozlov Val (medieval rampart). In 1912 the building was completely reconstructed according to the project of architect Sergei Zharov. The building is a three-tiered structure made of red brick in the Pseudo-Russian style. Windows serve as a decoration, among them there are double ones, of different height and shape in each tier. The object is under the operational management of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. See more..

  22. 4.5 Uglich Kremlin (493 reviews)
    - An interesting history
    Speciality Museums
    Uglich Kremlin image
Russia is filled with beautiful churches and cathedrals ... I found this one particularly interesting because of its history. Church of Prince Dimitry on Blood was built as a memorial to 8 year old Dimitri, son of Ivan the Terrible, who was found dead with a knife in his throat in 1591. There are 2 main theories: that he was murdered under the orders of regent Boris Godunov, or that Dimitri had an epileptic seizure while playing and fell on his own knife (noone quite bought that last theory). By the early 17th century Uglich had become a pilgrimage site and Dimitry had become a saint, with a small wooden church built where he died. The persent memorial church was built in 1692. The domes are blue and the church is red, making it hard to miss when approaching by river. The bell that announced Dimitry's death is also there (it was sent to Siberia after his death and later returned). See more..

It is not the monastery, the proper word is the nunnery/ It became notorious for holding royals - tsar's wives, sisters, daughters within its walls. In the basement of the main Cathedral there are graves of all these royal figures. I remember that back in 1990s it was a typical tourist hotel. but now it is a functioning nunnery although former hotel buildings were converted to church use. I was lucky enough to have nuns do the tour for us, which included the basement of the Cathedral. See more..

All other have copies/samples, also VOSTOK (Gagarin's craft) is right near by: State Museum of Cosmonauts in Kaluga To my shame I got there years after visiting National Museum of Aeronautic in Washington, DC - so if yo want to see "luxury science" that is most probably not a place But it you are true aeronautic enthusiast this is the case! You might want to visit Moscow Space city as well, and Museum of Strategic Missile Forces in Ukraine (must see IMHO, but logistics is hard, better to rent a car) See more..

A pleasant drive from Voronezh city centre to countryside spreading for miles and holding a Nature reserve. A surprise monastery comes into view after a steep descent down a well trodden path. This is a beautiful place where the resident monks will give talks on the history of the area.the fragrance of roses is exceptional and there is a stall selling homemade Kbac.A separate building houses guests who wish to lead the simple life for a few days and it is possible to order lunch which is prepared by the monks themselves. Up to the right via iron steps on the hillside are the doors leading to an amazing underground monastery which was formerly used by the monks. it is fascinating to see how these tunnels were built for worship and residency without compasses or levellers. The interior temperature is constantly 8C so warm clothes are needed even in summer. Following the precarious path up to the left of the doors it is possible to see for miles over the River Don and if you are lucky you will see eagles flying . There is also a view over the field in which advancing Cossacks were held back and defeated by the Russian Army. The winding river inspires one to read Sholokov's novel "Quiet flows the Don". Finish the trip with a long walk through the trail in the Nature Reserve but beware of Vipers! See more..

I was there in January. Just for fun. Dmitrov is an old lovely Russian town well worth visiting. Not that posh and harum-scarum as Moscow, not sort of artificially polished for tourist consumption as Suzdal', not European glamorous St. Pete. Its Kremlin is both authentic and kinda toyish, both ancient and lively, both tranquil and agile. Tidy, solemn. Cathedrals, statues and the whole of "intramuros" ambience enchant. A pleasant hideaway from the annoying buzz of the megapolis seventy kilometers down south. Recommended! See more..

Show-maket "Golden Ring" is a unique project not only for Russia but for the whole world. We have gathered all the cities included in the Golden Ring in one location. Moreover, it is not just miniatures we have made, but we have rather reconstructed the main cultural objects, transmitted the life of the cities, their sounds and ambiance. The maket is truly alive. The trains follow the schedule; the cars give way to each other on the roads; the residents do their work, socialize, love, organize meetings and demonstrations, promenade in the parks. Additional facilities of our maket will help you to experience such emotions as if you would visit the cities of the Golden Ring. See more..

The private museum is located in a old style wooden tradition house by local enthusiastic craftsmen. The exposition is located on two floors, where you can learn about the process of processing linen and birch bark. Amazing works of authorship made of birch bark fascinate and delight. In the basement there is a shop for linen products. Here you can also buy souvenirs and sweets made in Kostroma City. Recommended for visiting with children. See more..

One word: Excellent. I must admire the dedication of exotarium staff who works tirelessly to keep the environment neat and clean. There was no Zoo like smell inside. Place is aesthetically laid out with a lot of animal species. Excellent place for all ages specially for children to learn about rare animals. It is co-located with Tula Park which is yet another attraction. See more..
