Beautiful historical remains of a grim past.
I was lucky enough to get to see Aleksandrov as an unofficial stop on a tourist bus to another destination. The place was the home of the Tsar, Ivan the Terrible. It was apparently from this beautiful town that he launched his reign of terror, many of his wives disappeared mysteriously, and he murdered his son. The whole site is now quiet, and very beautiful. It has several nuns living in old, historic houses. These ladies appear to tend the site, and they keep it looking good. The historical site is extremely well documented with frequent excellent signs. These signs - often on large green metal plaques give good information about the building and good historical information. These are in Russian, with no English text. I am so happy that I was given the opportunity to visit this incredible historical area - which now is a beautiful arrangement of white painted buildings, within sturdy white walls, with an entry through a large gateway, protected by large, sturdy, green wooden gates.
