Volga is the greatest river of Europe, one of the greatest rivers in Russia. If you are travelling over the central European part of Russia. It's rising from the area of lakes swamps in Valdai Hills not far from one of the most beautiful lakes in Russia - Seliger in Tverskaya region, abt. 270 km (170 miles) from Tver, 440 km from Moscow. Take M10 (E105) highway from Moscow through Tver to Torzhok. There leave M10, cross Torzhok in the direction of Kuvshinovo - Ostashkov. Go through Ostashkov, then follow the road that is circumnavigating Seliger lake till the village Svapushche. There turn left. The last 20 km of your travel is the ground road, but good enough to move at speed over 50kmph, so it won't take too long. And finally you come to a beautiful place where Volga starts the way to Caspian sea. A nice chapel covers the headwaters of Volga. Two ebautiful churches are standing nearby: Preobrazhenskaya (the Church of Lord's Transfiguration) and Nikolskaya (the Church of St. Nicolas). And wonderful nature of Central Russia - forest, fields... You'll like it, for sure. See more..
