    Museum of Wooden Architecture image
On the place of the former monastery of St Demetrius one can find another marvel of traditional Russian architecture – an open-air Museum of Wooden Architecture. Several churches, houses, and other authentic 18th and 19th-century wooden buildings were brought here from all over the Vladimir region in the 1960–1970s. The man-made beauty of the monuments of folk architecture merged wonderfully with the landscape of centuries-old Suzdal. The Church of the Transfiguration (1756) seems to be a town cut in wood, with its parts of different sizes and shapes ingeniously connected by the carpenters who built the entire church without metal nails. The recently reconstructed Church of the Resurrection (1776) belongs to the type of “boat-shaped” churches, when all parts of the building stretch along one axis. The ship (bark, or boat) is an ancient Christian symbol comparing the Church to the Noah’s Ark. The object is under the operational management of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. See more..

It ruled the country for more than 300 years. The brilliant location in the bend of two rivers - Volga and Costroma forces the impression of the place. Museum Complex Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery image
The imposing architectural ensemble of the Monastery of the Saviour and St Euthymius “stands out vividly like a city” on a high steep bank of the Kamenka river. Prince Boris – of Suzdal and Nizhni Novgorod – founded it in 1352. St Euthymius, an associate of St Sergius of Radonezh, became the monastery's first hegumen. In 1642, Prince Dmitri Pozharsky, a Russian national hero, was buried here. The object is under the operational management of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. See more..

Cathedral of the Assumption (Uspensky Sobor) image
The Assumption Cathedral of Smolensk dominates its skyline. It is the cathedral where future Patriarch Kirill used to serve prior to his enthronement. During the Great Patriotic War it was spared from destruction by German general Gurderian. I visited it as an ordinary layman. Simply by walking up the high steps and entering the Cathedral in awe. The interior is absolutely fascinating. See more..

The Church of Ilya the Prophet image
But this forever young beauty is as charming as before. I visited it in September, on a bright golden autumn weekday. The church was open since it was rather warm. I stepped inside. Practically no-one around. Spell-binding old frescoes, icons, a magnificent iconostasis, fragrance of frankincence, soft crackling of burning candles. And silence. Enveloping silence. I love you, Ilya. It's somewhat puzzling, however, that one has to pay an entrance fee to see that splendor. They say it's a museum. Okay, it is. But first of all, it's a place of worship, a place to pray. For dough? Still, strongly recommended! A unique drawcard any city on earth would be proud of. (Parking nearby is a challenge - too many official institutions around. Try smaller streets a bit further.) See more..
  9. 4.5 Cathedral of Saint Demetrius (574 reviews)
    - Great Council of Russia!
    Saturday: 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
    Cathedral of Saint Demetrius image
The Cathedral of St. Demetrius is a pristine example of Vladimir and Suzdal’s architecture and relief carving. It was built in the 1190s by Vsevolod the Big Nest, Grand Prince of Vladimir, who built it near his palace for personal use. The Cathedral is a relatively small single-domed church, but its perfect proportions illustrate the artistic ideals and conventions of twelfth-century Vladimir and Suzdal. What sets the Cathedral of St. Demetrius apart from other buildings of the period is its extremely rich carved limestone decorations. Visitors can look at fascinating bas-reliefs depicting lions, centaurs, snow leopards and exotic ornaments. Repeated in the central part of all three façades is a composition featuring King David, who was associated in medieval art with the celebration of the beauty and harmony of the world. The object is under the operational management of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. See more..

Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin image
This church is probably the embodiment of Russia. It is features on many tourism printouts and web-sites. Let me share with you my experience of visiting it. It was not my first time visiting the church. But this time the weather was at its best. You cannot drive there. It is about 5 miles from Vladimir. Most of tourists get to Bogolyubovo first and then walk from there across the field to the Church. I saw some visitors drive up to the church - probably if there is a will, there is a way. I was mesmerized by the sight of the church, walked along its walls and went inside. See more..

Church of Tsarevich Demetrius on the Blood image
This church was ordered built by Peter the Great 100 years after the 1591 death of Tsarevitch Dmitri, youngest son of Ivan the Terrible. He and his mother were exiled to the Uglich kremlin and kept in captivity in the only surviving original kremlin building (Prince's Palace). It is believed the young Dmitri was murdered on Boris Godunov's orders. An investigation ruled that Dmitri had an epileptic seizure and "fell" on a knife, which slit his throat. Uglich become a pilgrimage site, and Dmitry was made a saint. This church is right next to the Volga River in the town of Uglich and is now a museum. It is painted red to remind people of the blood spilled here. The church is topped with distinctive blue onion domes studded with gold stars and topped with gold crosses. See more..

    - Russia's oldest church among farmlands
    Saturday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
Church of Boris and Gleb image
Four kilometres east from Suzdal, in the village of Kideksha, you can find one of the earliest examples of Vladimir and Suzdal limestone architecture – the church of St Boris and St. Gleb. Over the course of one year, 1152, Prince Yuri Dolgoruky of Suzdal built a number of churches in various towns in his vast domain, including this one. It is possible that the church of St. Boris and St. Gleb was the centre of the prince’s residence, surrounded by earthen ramparts and wooden walls. The austere simplicity of the church of St. Boris and St. Gleb is striking. Its cube-shaped main body with solid apses is built out of perfectly hewn limestone slabs. The plain structures are almost devoid of carved decorations. A band of blind arcading and modestly decorated portals are the only details to interrupt the simplicity of the architecture. The object is under the operational management of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. See more..
  17. 5.0 Gefsimansky Chernigovsky Skit (convent) (243 reviews)

    Gefsimansky Chernigovsky Skit (convent) image
This convent is not very old (relatively), but it has it's own miraculous icon of Our Lady. The buildings are very beautiful, especially the bell tower. But the most astonishing church is situated underground, in handmade caves (6 meters under the surface). When the monks were digging those caves, they discovered a spring, which is believes to be miraculous too. You can see the caves and the spring, if you book a local monk as a guide. We did. The tour was very impressive! By the way, in the convent you can also buy some genuine Russian specialties, such as various sorts of kvass (there are many!), sweeties, pirozhkis and suchlike. We visited this convent while in Kostroma. It was slightly passed 5 PM when we entered the beautiful buildings, and services were held. There were prayers and readings, and beautiful hymns sung by the nuns of the convent. The atmosphere was truly holy and spiritual. I could only stand silently behind the followers to respect their prayers. We didn’t spend too much time at the convent, but it was absolutely a magnificent experience for me. See more..

    - You wont regret a visit there

    Nikitsky Monastery image
We first tried to visit this monastery some fifteen year ago. No chance! The place looked like vandalized by barbarians or bombed by Nazis - though it naturally were our "heroic" communists who've made the most of it. This time it looked remarkably different though it still was a lot to be done. One could step in - observing a dress code. Hats off for men, head coverings and wrap around skirts for women. Some buildings are decently restored, other places are still prohibited to visit including the walls. To my mind, the best panoramic view of the complex is, so to say, from behind. Pass it by, drive several hundred meters further, reach an elevation and then look around. It will unfold in front of you in all its glory. Summing up, well worth a visit. Take this opportunity to proceed to the Blue Rock, by the way (see my corresponding review). It's not far away from there. See more..

  26. 5.0 Forty Saints' Church (143 reviews)
    - "Beauty By The Lake"
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Forty Saints' Church image
The church is located on the shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo. The day we visited was a rainy day that allowed us to walk around the property alone and enjoy the scenery. The view of the lake is very peaceful and the grounds are immaculate. There is a boat marina adjacent to the property and the day we visited, the marina was filled with boats and the lake was empty of boats. I was interested in the green color painted wroth iron pattern that was present in all the gates and fence sections. The cross pattern reminds me of a representation of a Pectoral Celtic Cross rather than an Eastern Christian style cross. The same cross pattern is also present in one external wall of the church under a window sill. The exterior of the church is painted in a traditional red shade with white trim. The onion domes are painted in a traditional green color. There are several painted scenes on the exterior of the church. A large exterior painting depicts the 40 Martyrs. The exterior of the church is in excellent condition. The church is worth a visit and you definitely should go inside. There are no photos allowed so you really have to enjoy the moment and take in what you see with you. The interior is simple in nature and did not overwhelm us. The plaque outside the main door carries the date 1755. See more..

    White Trinity Church image
Built in the mid-16th Cent., this is Tver’s oldest surviving building, situated in an old part of the city notable for its many wooden buildings. White in colour, it had a very pleasing architectural style. The front section and façade are crowned by a fairly tall spire, and continue backward through a flat middle section to a sloping rear from which 6 cupolas of varying sizes emerge ---- diminishing in size as they proceed backwards. We had a pleasant walk around the exterior, but could not enter to see the iconostasis and the 200-year-old wall paintings that apparently are highly regarded. It has the additional distinction of being the only church of Tver that survived WWll. See more..

Church of The Transfiguration of Our Saviour On Yar image
This beautiful stone temple was built on the site of a burned-out wooden church on the edge of a cliff above the bend of the Trubezh River in 1695 at the own expense of the steward Ivan Verderevsky. Therefore, the church received the second name "Savior on the Yar" among the people. Its new chapel was consecrated in honor of the nine martyrs of Kizichesk. The church is decorated with five domes and has bunches of columns at the corners of the building, which gives the building additional harmony. In 1935, the temple was closed, and the DOSAAF school held classes there. In 1995 the church was returned to believers The temple is visible from afar due to the high bell tower, which is an octagonal pillar covered with a tent. This little oldest Church is located near the river where the first Russian National Fleet was founded by Peter the Great. He used to sing in a Choir of this Church! The church has two parts. The lobby gives one a historic perspective. The second part truly feels different. It is a place of worship. No pictures allowed. This church has a miraculous quality to it. It survived Voronezh battle during World War II It was right in the epicenter of the ongoing gunfire for months. Every house around it destroyed to ashes. The church stood strong! Then the church had hard time being part of the flood zone. As a matter of fact, it stood in water for years! Thanks to people of Russia and new power in Kremlin, it is restored and protected from floods. I felt so good there that did not want to leave for home. Cosmas and Damian Church image
Amazingly beautiful Baroque church. Very unusual, tall five-headed, petal in plan. And a lot of money was spent for its construction, so in those days it was stood out among the buildings of its own kind. And was built, as many believe, by one of the disciples of the great Rastrelli. The bell tower stands next to the church and is connected to the porch. But it is clearly of later age, for it differs a few from the overall style of the complex. But only slightly. This is the church I liked more than others in Kaluga. But just the area in which it stands, looks not very suitable. There's even a strip bar nearby. Strange neighborhood for the church of the two saints, who became famous as the ascetic-disinterested.
