The Assumption Cathedral of Smolensk dominates its skyline. It is the cathedral where future Patriarch Kirill used to serve prior to his enthronement. During the Great Patriotic War it was spared from destruction by German general Gurderian. I visited it as an ordinary layman. Simply by walking up the high steps and entering the Cathedral in awe. The interior is absolutely fascinating.See more..
4.5Krutitskoe Podvorye(630 reviews) - A Gem Not on your Tourist Route Religious Sites
This little gem of tranquility was a highlight in my five days in Moscow. The Assumption Cathedral was the home church of the Metropolitan of Moscow back in the 16th Century when it was built. The residence is in the back, accessed from the cathedral by a covered walkway and across a gate tower. The church is in a neighborhood of very old wooden houses that are being restored. The buildings were not open when we were there (the church is a working church). The outside of the structures showed all kinds of beautiful ornamentation, mostly in brick, but also including ceramic tiles. Behind is a tranquil garden and beyond that, as if to create some sort of counterbalance is an old prison building which was reported to have housed Beria before his demise.See more..

5.0Vysotsky Monastery(188 reviews) - A small but very beautiful monastery Sunday: 7:30 AM - 6:30 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
Serpukhov Vysotsky monastery was founded in 1374 by St. Sergius of Radonezh at the request of Serpukhov specific Prince Vladimir the Brave. The monastery served as an important spiritual center of medieval Russia and a powerful fortress at the southern turn of the Moscow Principality. The fate of the Holy monastery is closely connected with the fate of Russia - it was besieged and ravaged by enemies, also there were times of prosperity and desolation. At the beginning of the twentieth century, due to contemporaries' opinions, Vysotsky monastery was one of the most comfortable abodes of the Fatherland. With the advent of Soviet power in 1918 of the monastery went under the provincial concentration camp. In 1928 Vysotsky monastery was finally closed. For decades, the ancient and once glorious abode was dilapidated and destroyed. In 1991 Vysotsky monastery was returned to the Orthodox Church, the revival of the ancient monastery began again.See more..

There are many churches in Suzdal, but this one is special for me. I had got acquainted with the priest of the Assumption church, Father Andrei. When I was visiting this Church several hours later, I saw father Andrei again. He showed me the church and explained the tiny details that usually ordinary visitors miss.See more..

4.5Alekseev-Akatov Convent(56 reviews) - Peaceful Convent Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
Wonderful building in pale turquoise with adjacent living quarters for the sisters. Grounds are full of wonderful flowers, especially the roses and a separate garden for those wishing to reflect or remember in peace. Evening songs wafting through the open windows.Utter bliss.See more..
The wooden temple quite rare for modern times. Located on the outskirts of Borovsk. It is only quite fresh, set on the site of the former old church, also of wood, but built without a single nail. Partially used old logs. Despite the fact that the spirit of new construction is felt the church and its neighborhood makes a good impression, which does not prevent even a nearby cemetery. It stands on a hill, and the observation point offers excellent views of Borovsk. After about 300 meters of descent towards Protva river, you will see the spring of the Pokrov mother of God with two baths – men's and women'sSee more..

5.0Kostomarovo Saviour Monastery(42 reviews) - Моя родина Spent More than 3 hours Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
See more..
See more..
This is a men's monastery. Formally it was known since the 15th century, since its founding by the recluse Tikhon of Kaluga (also of Medyn). In fact, what appears before your eyes, began to exist recently. Several times the monastery was destroyed - by Tatars, Lithuanians, Germans and Soviet power, when within its walls were located the technical college and even the military unit, and 5 times it again rebelled at this place. Even the old name of the village was changed – now it is named after the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, who've never been here! He visited Kaluga, other places in this region I have been, but this – never. But in the village, which is called Tikhonova pustyn (Saint Tikhon Hermitage), there are no traces of pustyn itself! The monastery is clearly rich – it has three stately temples (blue, green and yellow – if to distinguish them by color), spring, flower beds, paths, spiritual education center, Sunday school, publishing house, library, hotel, bakery. The relics of St. Tikhon are in blue one - the church of the Assumption. The place is largely legendary. Written sources about the history of St.Tikhon and the monastery almost did not survive, only word of mouth rumor. But sometimes it is stronger than any destruction.See more..
Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
See more..
See more..

4.5Kholki Holy Trinity Monastery(15 reviews) - Древний монастырь Sunday: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Religious Sites
See more..
