Built by the decree of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, it was during his reign that the heyday of white stone architecture and the rise of Vladimir occurred. "I will renew this city with the metropolitan, may this city be a great reign and the head of all." Kiev, the "mother of Russian cities", served as a model for Vladimir's table. The main entrance to Vladimir, as in the "city of Yaroslav", was the Golden Gate built in 1158-1164 with the gate church and the Virgin's robe. Similar buildings existed in different years in major Orthodox cities - Jerusalem, Kiev and Constantinople. And until today they have been preserved only in Vladimir. The Great Patriotic War is an important part of the history of Orel. Each year there is a celebration of the liberation of the town which takes place near the T34 tank memorial. I think this museum is a must-see for anyone visiting the town. The museum is very traditional in it's approach so don't expect anything high-tech. This Museum centres on a reconstruction of the Command Bunker of Konstantin Konstantinovich Rossokovsky, commander of the Central Front during Operation Zitadelle, the abortive german offensive of July 1943. In addition to the bunker, there is a an exhibition hall with displays covering the personnel, equipment and action of the command post during the battle. Outside there are , inevitably, monuments to the soldiers of the time, and a small display of military hardware, regrettably not all contemporary. Came on a short trip to Kursk from Moscow to visit some friends who are studying here. One of the places that I managed to squeeze in my day trip. A very educational museum and its very informative. The staff are so helpful and they try their best to explain to us even with the language barrier. Enjoyed this trip to the museum.See more..
