Magnificent House Museum of Great Landscapist
This is a jewel. It is on the Volga at Ples. Very difficult to get to. But so worth a visit. It show cases the work and life of one of the world's greatest landscape artists, and is an amazing insight into the life of a rural gentleman in the late Czarist era. The river at Ples is magnificent and one can actually take a boat out into the , and the view from the river to Ples is actually one of Levitan's landscapes.

Very nice place
Very nice place to go with one of the best guides recommended to us at Chastny Visit family hotel where we stayed (also highly recommended).

Worth a trip to Plyos. World class.
A very major Russian landscape painter. High quality paintings, same level as those at the Tretiakow Gallery of Moscow. Rooms are a bit small, given the popularity of that museum. Was quiet when I visited in October, but I was told by prominent people of Plyos, that it gets crowded in summer. A delightful lady, a Levitan scholar, gave me a tour of the museum. It was a treat. She was extremely knowledgeable, enthousiast, generous. It was really worldclass.
