Meticulous planning far in advance is a must!
Never forget that this "intramuros Forbidden City" is first and foremost the seat of Russia's President the Almighty and only then a tourist attraction. So, security procedures are pretty strict there. As a Muscovite, I knew it, of course, so I started to structure my trip two weeks in advance. The goal was to show it to my two grandsons and after careful planning we sure made it! In late August. The second objective was to watch change of Kremlin guard - a spectacular ceremony per se. We saw everything! Took a walk around, visited cathedrals we wanted to step into, enjoyed the show and even had a chance to talk to mounted guards (they were so nice to the kids!). Paths are made by walking...

    Get ready for the crowds
We were there in a chilly September and early in the day. However there was still a queue and once inside its pretty crowded and you will need to queue to look at exhibits and dodge between tour groups and school groups. Exquisite items on display in the armoury and a couple of other buildings to visit. Its a large complex with not much open to the public. Its still a huge drawcard.
