Nice place to visit and eat/buy some cheese

About cheese and more Kostroma cheese is famous throughout Russia! What is it, Russia - and in other places they know and love delicious, fragrant Kostroma cheese. Sometimes Kostroma is even called the cheese capital of Russia. In 2017, Kostroma took third place in the gastronomic rating of Russian cities according to Booking.com, thanks to the Kostroma cheese. Any tourist, arriving in Kostroma, without fail buys a small piece of "delicious Kostroma gold" ... In the old merchant's mansion of the end of the XVIII century (the house of Reshchikov) on Tchaikovsky Street, an extensive exhibition on the world history of cheese making is presented. Totally without English - but still great museum
Warning!!! No English labels, no English guides! Find a friendly local to translate or hire a private guide! This is new, modern, friendly interactive museum recently opened in December, 2017. It shows you the whole process of making the cheese - from cows to packaging. You can see the original instruments and tools for cheese manufacturing. Discover the history of the cheese and cheese making in Russia. There are some interesting facts about the local manufacturers (Manturovsky, Voskresensky, etc) and notable local cheeses of Kostroma district (definitely try Korolkoff and Le Buyer!) - feel free to taste it and buy some in the museum shop. Very nice interior with lovely mice and cows, kind and friendly young guides who will tell a lot you about the cheese. Suitable for young visitors. The main problem of this museum is lack of English language - yes, you can see something new even if you can't read Russian, you can taste some local cheeses and buy it, but unfortunately you'll miss a lot of information. Some museum staff has average English, but there are no signs, no English guidance and no English leaflets makes understanding difficult.

Very interesting and worth the time
This museum opened in 2017 and it is definitely worth the time. In June 2019 the entry fee was R380 which included cheese tasting at the end. Everything is in Russian so be aware. Still, you could look at the exhibits and at the end there is a retail store to buy cheeses. I liked the museum a lot. I told my friend that usually Russian museums are boring but this was not. The tour itself was about 45 minutes. If you do the tasting, add another 20 minutes or so.
