This UNESCO listed historic centre is much smaller and a great deal more intimate than Sibiu and the upper town which is the main attraction for visiting can be seen properly in a half day. At the time of our mid-October visit it was still relatively busy so would guess that in the heart of the tourist season it gets very congested with visitors as the place is relatively small with many narrow streets. Parking can be problematic but as we were staying overnight, it wasn’t an issue for us. This is one place not to miss. The restoration is spectacular. See more..

The former Council House (Casa Sfatului; built in 1420) is in the middle of the square and is now the Brașov County Museum of History. The square is a good starting point for exploring the old town. A great fire destroyed most of the former walled city in 1689; it took several decades to rebuild. Piața Sfatului is surrounded by 18th-19th century houses, historic sights, museums, indoor and outdoor terraces, shops and restaurants. The old center of Brasov, one of the southernmost cities in the Transilvania region, is just simply beautiful and charming. Be sure to differentiate between Centrul Nou (New Center) and Centrul Veche (Old Center), as the new center is not specifically interesting or appealing. The new center is the area you walk in when you leave the train station and walk southward. The old center is typically clean, decorated with old and charming, colorful houses that are mostly in a quite good condition. The squares are also very nice and provide spacey terraces where one can very well drink a beer or coffee in the sun - but of course, as Brasov is situated next to mountains, it also rains quite often. I actually like the entire inner city of Brasov - it breathes that specific atmosphere that one feels as welcoming, charming and relaxing. Highly recommended for a 2-3 days stay. See more..

You can buy your ticket for 16 lei full price and then head up to see some different artefacts, mainly about the different guilds which were in the town. The information is in Romanian, English, German and I guess Hungarian? The climb to the top wasn’t too bad but some of the stair cases are a little steep / steps narrow. There are different landings on which you can pause. You can read more about the different figures which are used for different days as you get nearer to the top. The balcony itself is the full 360 degrees and has some markers to show how far certain cities are away in different directions. On a good day, you can get some great shots of the town below - definitely worth a visit. See more..

You pay and then climb up a few flights of stairs which aren’t too steep and are fairly wide compared to many other towers. At the top, you get a great panorama for the price and, although it’s enclosed so your photos might not be as good, it’s amazing value for the price. Over 1000 species of plants, animals, insects live in this area. Here there are few rare plants. Turda Gorge has one of the most spectacular karst landscapes in Romania. There is one cable car up and one down. I guess at busy times you will have to wait a long time to get on one. September is a quiet time and we were lucky and didn't have to wait at all either way. Once you are up, there is still a bit to walk. You won't see much if you don't walk anywhere after you get off the cable car. I would suggest go straight to the summit as most people will go towards the Brasov sign first. There is a nice view up there but you can get just as goof of a view of you walk up the black/ white tower instead for free and much less walking. See more..

Another stunning little city, Romania really is blessed with so many delightful, historical towns & cities. Sibiu, with a population of circa 150,000, is fairly large, but the old centre, where the bulk of the sites of interest reside, is pretty compact & well suited to walking. Split between an upper & lower section, the primary sites include 3 main squares, the principal pedestrianised thoroughfare, Strada Nicolae Balcescu, picturesque Bridge of Lies, plus various churches (my favourite being The Holy Trinity) & other buildings of architectural importance. Look out for the Houses with Eyes! Ample restaurants, cafes, hotels & museums too, in addition to the remaining towers & walls encircling parts of the city. This complex of wooden churches and buildings is an amazing place of peace and serenity. The main church is 57 m high and it was built recently between 1993-1995. We have visited the complex during sunset and we were blown away by the beauty of the place. This complex should be put on the itinerary of every traveller that visits Maramures. It is a UNESCO Heritage Site and it has plenty of facilities from souvenir shop to kiosks selling the local pie and refreshing drinks. There is even an ATM of BRD near the parking area. For centuries Katherine's gate was the only connection towards the Schei neighborhood of Brasov until 1827 when the Schei gate was built in its vicinity to handle the traffic in and out of the city - because Katherine's gate became too small for the task. Nowadays is a historical monument, the gates exterior tower is what can be seen and remained from the complex system that the gate once was - the murder holes and firing can be still seen today. And it is one of the most well preserved pieces of fortifications in Brasov. So when you stroll through Brasov and you are in the area of the Schei gate , you can stop by Katherine's gate to take a few pictures - also in the vicinity is a small park and there you can find some very nice wooden sculptures. This is one of the nearest glacier lake that we could see in person. We went there by car from Vidraru lake and no problem passing through the way where we saw some bears. Was a little crowded even on weekday, from our point of view, can't imagine on peak season weekend. There are plenty of free parking near the highway down the road. Not necessary packed between the hotels or parking lots. We stayed a night in the cabana on the lake and continued our one day hiking the next day to Capra lake. The restaurant at the hotel is super expensive and I recommend you to have some barbecue at the square. Try the baked polenta with sheep cheese, that was wrapped in aluminium foil. See more..

I enjoyed my visit at Fagaras Fortress. I wanted to visit it a few years back but it was on renovation. The renovations are still hapening today but you can visit the inside of the fortress which has a very interesting museum and a very beautiful Tower Hall. The museum was interesting, well preserved and maintained, everything looked nice: it had also English translations for foreign visitors. The exhibition take visitors through a series of rooms, where art installations, light and shadow shows, and multimedia projections engage all five senses, resulting in an immersive experience that is both educational and entertaining. *Visited July 2021* It was a long walk uphill through Cetățuia Park up to Cetățuia Hill on a Sunday afternoon with temperatures in the High 30s . Once at the peak of the hill there was a panoramic view of Cluj and the surrounding area where there are some good views of the stunning churches and historic buildings. It was definitely worth the sweaty walk up to Cetățuia Hill for the great views of the city. See more..

I highly recommend a walk through the historical center. Pick up a map at the tourist information office on Alba Iulia Street. Then visit as many sights as you can. Alba Iulia Street has an installation of umbrellas overhead. The walls of the houses are part of the old fortifications. Be sure to visit Union Square, Liberty Square, and Victory Square. See more..

This museum is a must see if you want to understand the 1989 Revolution. The revolution began in Timisoara. I saw the introductory video and walked through the many exhibits on two floors. You can watch the revolution unfold in several rooms, each of which focuses on one or two days in December 1989. There were photos and children's art as well as art installations. It is a comprehensive museum and I would highly recommend a visit here. See more..
