Timișoara Orthodox Cathedral, Transylvania, Romania

4.5 (767 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Transylvania Churches & Cathedrals

A venerated landmark in the centre of Timişoara

It would be a shame to make a visit to Timişoara without stopping by the the most impressive construction in town - Metropolitan Church. At first glance you could easily be beguiled into thinking it's older than it actually is. In fact, it was only completed two years into the Second World War in Moldovian style. There are prominent features of Byzantine architecture and the inside exudes sheer opulence. Besides marking the central point in town, its chimes reverberate around the city. The cathedral is built upon 5,000 oak supports and can house the same number of people. Inside display relics and many religious artifacts.

Beautiful introduction to the Romanian Orthodox faith.
Located directly across from the National Theater, the Metropolitan Orthodox Cathedral doesn’t really frame Piata Victoriei as much as impose itself on it. Built over ten years starting in 1936, it was inaugurated in 1946 in the presence of over 400 priests, several bishops, and King Michael I. It blends neo-Byzantine and Moldavian styles and contains a wealth of symbolism inside and out, including the country’s highest dome at 83m; materials to build it were almost exclusively sourced locally. It also contains eleven towers, seven giant bells, and over 200 windows. I visited here during my day in Timisoara, spending maybe 45 minutes on site. The interior is quite simply stunning, there is no other word for it. There was a mass ongoing during our stopover, and my excellent guide provided a wealth of information about both the structure and the religion it represents. The highlight for this reviewer were clearly the relics of St. Joseph the New, found just to the right of the church’s narthex. Other notable features included the dome, iconostasis, and memorials for the young victims of the 1989 revolution found at the entry. In summary, this is an excellent starting point for anyone visiting the town of Timisoara. It provides information about the country’s most-practiced religion and is a local focal point for one of the country’s defining events. In retrospect I wish I would have spent more time here but my relatively brief walk-through was memorable enough. Spectacular.

The most iconic landmark of Timisoara
When it comes to Timisoara the most iconic landmark is the Orthodox cathedral situated in Victoriei square of the city (it's like the Parliament building in Budapest, like St. Stephen Cathedral in Vienna , like Sagrada Familia in Barcelona ... etc.) It was built between 1936 and 1941 and it is a landmark that can be seen from various parts of the city. So when you are in Timisoara this is one of the top 5 places you need to put on your list of Landmarks to visit regardless if you are religious or not. Entrance is free of charge and unlike the vast majority of churches in Timisoara it is open all the time. Enjoy , it is worth it.
