*** Alba Iulia - Alba Carolina Citadel *** A town coated by the legendary halo of the great historical events that took place within its ancient walls, Alba Iulia has deeply got into the Romanian people's mind and soul. No other Transylvanian town has gathered so many crucial meanings and symbols. With thousands and thousands of years of human existence lying behind it, Alba Iulia represents the charming mirror in which all the ethnic groups of Transylvania can discover their vigor or their traditions of yore. The heart of Alba Iulia is Alba Carolina Citadel. Alba Carolina, the most representative bastion fortress in Romania and Southeast Europe, built upon the initiative of Emperor Charles the VIth of Habsburg, under the supervision of the French-born Austrian field marshal Eugene of Savoy, is wearing its royal robe. A royal citadel, residence of the bishopric, capital of autonomous principality, and a military garrison, Alba Iulia has been during all historical periods the main political, administrative, religious, cultural, and military centre of Transylvania. We invite you to visit The Other Capital of Romania. See more..
  2. 4.5 Turnul Sfatului (The Tower of the Council) (494 reviews)
    - A must do

Turnul Sfatului (The Tower of the Council) image
For 2 lei this is definitely a must do. The entrance is up some stairs at the bottom of the Council building (under the white arches). You pay and then climb up a few flights of stairs which aren’t too steep and are fairly wide compared to many other towers. At the top, you get a great panorama for the price and, although it’s enclosed so your photos might not be as good, it’s amazing value for the price. If you can time it for golden hour, then you’re in for a treat. See more..

Greatest Saxon fortified church from XV century, in Transylvania. The altar piece is one of the oldest painted tryptich and there is also an amazing lock piece on the sacristy door as well as many sculpted figures of the local personalities of the time. There was a local exhibit of art tiles from a local factory as well. The surrounding village and nature are impressive. See more..
  4. 4.0 Yekaterina's Gate (303 reviews)
    - Reminder of the cities fortifications.

    Yekaterina's Gate image
For centuries Katherine's gate was the only connection towards the Schei neighborhood of Brasov until 1827 when the Schei gate was built in its vicinity to handle the traffic in and out of the city - because Katherine's gate became too small for the task. Nowadays is a historical monument, the gates exterior tower is what can be seen and remained from the complex system that the gate once was - the murder holes and firing can be still seen today. And it is one of the most well preserved pieces of fortifications in Brasov. So when you stroll through Brasov and you are in the area of the Schei gate , you can stop by Katherine's gate to take a few pictures - also in the vicinity is a small park and there you can find some very nice wooden sculptures. Fagaras Fortress image
I enjoyed my visit at Fagaras Fortress. I wanted to visit it a few years back but it was on renovation. The renovations are still hapening today but you can visit the inside of the fortress which has a very interesting museum and a very beautiful Tower Hall. The museum was interesting, well preserved and maintained, everything looked nice: it had also English translations for foreign visitors. The price of the ticket was 20 RON per person I definitely found it interesting and worth a visit if you are nearby Fagaras See more..
  6. 4.5 Peasant Fortified Church at Prejmer (248 reviews)

Peasant Fortified Church at Prejmer image
Priced at 15 RON ( less than £3) this gem of a fortified church is different from the ones I have visited previously. It’s unusual in the fact that it has so many rooms that were set aside for the locals. It is well maintained and gives you a real insight in to life in former times when fortifications of this type were needed. See more..

I highly recommend a walk through the historical center. Pick up a map at the tourist information office on Alba Iulia Street. Then visit as many sights as you can. Alba Iulia Street has an installation of umbrellas overhead. The walls of the houses are part of the old fortifications. Be sure to visit Union Square, Liberty Square, and Victory Square. See more..

    Cetatea Soimos image
High above the river Mures (west of Romania, district: Arad, city called Lipova) on a cliff lies the Fortress of the Hawk; in Romanian it is called "Cetatea Soimos", because "soim" means "hawk". The fortress was already mentioned in the year 1278.Nowadays the proud fortress has become a ruin. You can go there by trian, by car, motorcycle. It is not difficult to arrive there. Many tourists climb up to the fortress, for playtime, for a picknick, for the beautiful overviews, for a dangerous climbing on the walls. Not far away there is a great franciscan monastery called Radna Monastery. From the fortress you can go by walk. Local people are very nice and kind. See more..
