Reminder of the cities fortifications.

For centuries Katherine's gate was the only connection towards the Schei neighborhood of Brasov until 1827 when the Schei gate was built in its vicinity to handle the traffic in and out of the city - because Katherine's gate became too small for the task. Nowadays is a historical monument, the gates exterior tower is what can be seen and remained from the complex system that the gate once was - the murder holes and firing can be still seen today. And it is one of the most well preserved pieces of fortifications in Brasov. So when you stroll through Brasov and you are in the area of the Schei gate , you can stop by Katherine's gate to take a few pictures - also in the vicinity is a small park and there you can find some very nice wooden sculptures.

Disneyesque medieval gate in a small public park
Yekaterina's Gate (.k.a. Catherine's Gate, Poarta Ecaterinei), appears Disneyesque in style, and is the only original city gate surviving from medieval times. It was built in 1559 by the Tailors’ Guild, replacing an older gate destroyed by the 1526 flood. It is named after St. Catherine's Monastery, formerly located nearby. Four small corner turrets symbolize the town's judicial autonomy, and the "right of sword" (ius gladii) including capital punishment. Brasov's coat of arms (a crown on an oak tree trunk and roots) appears above the portal. During medieval times this gate (then called Porta Valacce) was the only entrance for Romanians living inside Brasov fortress. During the Saxon rule from the 13th to 17th century Romanians were forbidden from owning property inside the fortress. They settled outside the wall in a neighborhood named Şcheii Braşovului. Romanians could only enter the city at certain times and had to pay a toll at this gate for the privilege of selling their produce inside the fortress. Yekaterina's Gate is on the east side of a small park, and is accessible at all times.

    Medieval Gate
uts close to the city center and also a tourist office you can find this square gate with one big central and 4 small corner turrets. In the Medieval Age it was the main access into the city from the Schei quarter. Around small park to relax.
