  6. 4.5 Freedom Square (197 reviews)
    - Beautiful and spacious
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Freedom Square image
Beautiful and huge square in the center of Ruse, the 5th biggest city in Bulgaria, dominated by the soaring and grand Monument of Freedom. It is surrounded by buildings of awesome neo-baroque and neoclassical architecture, many of which are cultural monuments, that brought Ruse the nickname of "The Little Vienna" long time ago. A couple of fountains are on the square as well as some well-trimmed, manicured small gardens. You can watch the world going by from some of the benches in the shade of the trees or you can enjoy a drink or meal in some of the restaurants and cafeterias scattered along the periphery of the square. 7. 4.5 Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo (113 reviews)
    - Beautiful frescoes!
Spent More than 3 hours Religious Sites
    Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo image
This is a gorgeously frescoed church of the life of Christ, painted on the walls of a rock cave. One cannot but delight in the age and the skill of the paintings and marvel at the fact that they are still there, in all of their splendor, for us to view. There are two ways up to the cave. One is an easy, gradual walk of about five minutes to a viewpoint and then a short walk along the ridge to the church cave. The other is directly up some stairs to the cave, maybe a two minute climb. I saw a few comments about the difficulty of reaching the top, but that can only be from people who have never climbed five flights of stairs. It truly is not difficult. But, it is not handicapped accessible. See more..
  8. 4.5 St. Dimitrii of Basarbovo Monastery (106 reviews)
    - Amazing! Beautiful monastery
    Religious Sites
St. Dimitrii of Basarbovo Monastery image
When I got out of the tour van I was amazed at the beauty of this monastery built into the side of the mountain. It's absolutely incredible! There are quite a few steps to navigate alongside the mountain to visit the different rooms. You get to see how the Monk's lived. There is also a new monastery at the bottom where I was lucky enough to meet the resident Monk and receive a blessing. A gorgeous and incredible monastery in Bulgaria. A must see! See more..
  9. 4.5 Sveta Troitsa Cathedral (61 reviews)
    - Fabuluos Orthodox Church Building
Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Sveta Troitsa Cathedral image
This Orthodox church is built into the ground. Descending the stairs you realise it is much bigger and grander than the external structure suggests. When lit the sanctuary is full of the most vivid colours and the wall of icons is the most impressive I have ever seen. The church feels like a living entity. Must see... See more..

    - nice cave
    Caverns & Caves
    Orlova Chuka Cave image
It is the second longest cave in Bulgaria, 40 km from Ruse. Few of the galleries of this limestone cave, which is said to be 13 km long, are open to visitors, the guided visit takes about 40 minutes, the narration is good, but only in Bulgarian. There is a camp in the immediate vicinity of the cave where you can stay in tents. See more..
  11. 4.5 Rousse Museum of History (47 reviews)
    - Essential visit for history of area
    Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
    Rousse Museum of History image
This is a well organised and explained museum containing excavated finds from ruse and the area around, from the prehistoric period to victorian times. There is a good amount of displays for prehistoric and Roman artefacts, with less on Thracian discoveries. There is also a good section on the goths and medieval times. All areas have lots of information in English and artefacts are well displayed. There are seats at regular intervals. At only 5 leva (2.50 euro) each it is well worth it, and gives a good impression of the history of the area. There are also leaflets in english to buy about the local historical sights and trinkets. The staff and very helpful and speak good English. See more..

The museum is located on four floors, where you can see a rich collection of fossils and dioramas depicting various species in a real environment. Special attention is paid to the exposure of prehistoric animals, including a model of the hairy mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) in real size. Exposed is the world's only entirely preserved mammoth body part for those species - the lower jaw of Mammuthus rumanus. See more..

  21. 4.5 Monument of Liberty (2 reviews)
    - The symbol of Ruse
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Monument of Liberty image
The Monument of Freedom is, no doubt, the symbol of the city of Ruse and dominates the central Freedom Square. It was designed by the famous Italian sculptor of Florence, Arnaldo Joki, but built by a Bulgarian sculptor as a tribute to those who fought for the liberation of Bulgaria in 1876/77. It is a figure of a woman on a high column, holding a sword, with 2 lions at the base of the column, one breaking the chains of slavery and the other guarding the sword and shield of freedom. 22. 4.0 Danube River (173 reviews)
    - Vibrant part of town
    Bodies of Water
    Danube River image
Park "Keya" (meaning a pier in Bulgarian) along the Danube River is a vibrant part of Ruse. Children's playgrounds, a couple of cafes, manicured gardens but not too many trees to protect you from the sunshine are there in the park which clearly has been well taken care of recently. It is a perfect place for a relaxing stroll in the early summer evening to watch the sunset and the passing-by river ships and barges. A number of very good restaurants are up on the boulevard above the park. See more..

  26. 4.0 The Monument to Angel Kanchev (5 reviews)
    - Angel Kanchev (and Elias Canetti)
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
The Monument to Angel Kanchev image
Many people, walking up Boulevard Slavyanski (leading from the Anna Palace Hotel and the river to Alexandrovska and Freedom Square), will be curious about the statue in the middle of the road of a strikingly good-looking, very young man holding a pistol. This is Angel Kanchev, revolutionary hero of the Bulgarian struggle for freedom from the Ottomans, who, rather than be captured, took his own life very near this spot. He was only 22. Ruse University is also named after Angel Kanchev. And a few yards up the same street you can see the first floor flat where the great writer and Nobel prize-winner Elias Canetti spent his childhood. It isn't possible to go in (at any rate, it wasn't when I was there), but there's a plaque outside. See more..

  29. 3.5 Pantheon of National Revival Heroes (34 reviews)
    - People of Ruse don't like the Pantheon
Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums
Pantheon of National Revival Heroes image
The Pantheon is an ossuary of 453 persons supporters of the Bulgarian national revival. Many of them connect their lives with Ruse. A church called "All Saints" was demolished to build the Pantheon - that is why people of Ruse don't like the building. Urban legend says that everyone who participated in church demolition had either died, was heavily injured or another big trouble happened to him. Nowadays, the church is reconstructed nearby the Pantheon, and there is an orthodox cross on Pantheon's top. Inside the Pantheon there is a chapel and a museum exposition. Pantheon store the bones of revolutionaries, rebels and cultural educationists important for the History of Bulgaria. Here lie the bones of Dragan Tsankov, Karavelov, Zahari Stoyanov, Thoma Kardzhiev, Atanas Uzunov and Olimpi Panov, as well as the decent family Obretenovi. See more..
